Today, I just got my new week's issue of Entertainment Weekly, the entertainment magazine, and you gotta look at this! Read this article, and included is an inset on Jonathan Winters as the voice of Papa Smurf. And look at the new image with NPH alongside Clumsy, Brainy, Smurfette, Gusty & Papa Smurf.

I was unaware that Jonathan Winters is 85 years old. He must be the oldest of the surviving voice cast of the cartoon series.

Well, Mr. Winters is still the oldest comedian alive. He appeared in "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" and "The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming!" He was seen in "The Flintstones" (1994) and "The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle" (2000). He also did voice work in cartoons (in addition to voicing Grandpa Smurf) and animated movies such as "Alakazam the Great" (1961), "Pogo for President" (1980), "The Thief & the Cobbler" (1995 Miramax version), and "Santa Vs. the Snowman" (1996). Hope you make the most of it of hearing Mr. Winters as Papa Smurf, about 25 years since Grandpa Smurf.

One of, but not the oldest. Lucille "Smurfette" Bliss is 95, while June "Jokey Smurf" Foray is 93.

Yes, they're are many voice over legends still alive today. June Foray also voices many characters including Rocket J. Squirrel from "The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle" (2000) and Granny from "Looney Tunes".

And she also voiced "Dudley Do-Right"'s Nell Fenwick, "Tom Slick"'s Marigold (both by Jay Ward) and Hazel the Witch (from "Looney Tunes" too). ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Love the new poster, the smurfs all look cute and the detail in the animation is excellent. I do have one little problem with it though - why does Brainy have a pencil behind his ear? I don't think Handy's going to be pleased, he might think Brainy's trying to steal his part in the movie!

I did not expect that for the live-action film that the Smurfs will have blue eyes. In the comic and in animation, the Smurfs have dark eyes.

Music Update: Heitor Pereira (the composer of "Despicable Me", "Curious George" and Beverly Hills Chihuahua") will compose the score for "The Smurfs Movie".
Heitor Pereira Scoring 'The Smurfs'
Posted: April 5, 2011
Heitor Pereira has been hired to score the upcoming film adaptation of The Smurfs. The film marks Sony Pictures Animation’s first live-action/animated hybrid film and stars Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria and Sofia Vergara in the primary live-action roles. The film’s voice talent includes Jonathan Winters, George Lopez, Alan Cummings and Katy Perry. The movie is directed by Raja Gosnell who has previously worked with Pereira on Disney’s 2008 hit family movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua. The Smurfs were created in 1958 by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford (aka Peyo) and have spawned numerous print and smallscreen incarnations, the most popular one in the United States being the Hanna-Barbera cartoon version. The movie will be released in 2D and 2D on July 29, 2011.
Pereira is coming off scoring his biggest hit of his career with last year’s Despicable Me. The composer also has the romantic comedy A Little Bit of Heaven starring Kate Hudson, Gael Garcia Bernal, Whoopi Goldberg and Kathy Bates coming up. The film already premiered in the UK earlier this way and is still awaiting a domestic release date.

Mr. Pereira collaborated with director Raja Gosnell on "Beverly Hills Chihuahua".

I think it's a funny joke based on the famous quote from the 1950s movie Sunset Blvd., "All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up".

Yes, Chris, I also observed that and I didn't understand it very much. Unless he had been taking some notes in a scene... Oh, and Papa looks cool and classy with sunglasses, by the way. Yesterday I watched "Rio" with my sister and my nephew and, besides "Cars -2" and "Kung Fu Panda -2" trailers, there was... "The Smurfs Movie" trailer in Portuguese, it was the first time ever I heard it!! ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Well pull my string and button my ears, I'm gonna see "RIO" in 3D! And not only that, Rio is another one of those "Blue Period" movies. (In addition to "Avatar", "MegaMind" and "The Smurfs" movie.) You should list it as "Blue Movies"! One more thing, I'll try to finish my last host sequence today or tomorrow. And I'll do the editing, the narration and the music from the movie should be included. Please contact Sony for the composer of the film, and I'll use portions of his score for background music. Additional music include (but are not limited to...) "Enchanted", "Percy Jackson", "Ponyo", "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", "Up", "Cars 2", "Doogal", "Spirited Away" and "Toy Story 3". And for this purpose, I'm going to use Adobe Photoshop Elements to mix my hosting footage with stills, video and stock footage, such as "MegaMind", "Rio", "Avatar", "Percy Jackson" and "The Sorcerer's Apprentice". Including "HOP", "Arthur" and "Yogi Bear". I'll be ready soon enough.

An extreme example of a close-up gone wrong is the Looney Tunes cartoon "Duck Amuck", where Daffy Duck swims out to a distant island in the background and asks the animator for a close-up, but instead of giving him a close-up, it just shrinks the picture border around Daffy. When Daffy demands for a real close-up, the camera zooms in really close until you basically see Daffy's eyeballs in the picture. That's what I meant by "NOT TOO CLOSE!!!"

Oh, I see, like you're using this joke on the new poster, where all the Smurfs are too close to the poster body, and it gets too claustrophobic like the Toy Story 3 poster. It's the same publicity principle. So thanks for the heads-up!
