Nickelodeon Working On New 'The Smurfs' Movie
Nickelodeon is set to premiere The Smurfs, a brand new CG-animated series which follows the beloved characters embarking upon rousing new adventures in September 2021 - and it seems like Nickelodeon has even bigger plans for the iconic franchise!
In a Smurf-tastic new video in ViacomCBS' Streaming On series, Brian Robbins, President and CEO of Nickelodeon and Chief Content Officer, kids and family for Paramount+ revealed that Nickelodeon is currently working on a The Smurfs movie!
As the film is still under wraps, not much is currently known about the theatrical. Interestingly, Robbins mentions the The Smurfs theatrical in a video for ViacomCBS' streaming services, which may hint that the movie will be simultaneously released in theaters and on Paramount+, similar to how Paramount Pictures just released PAW Patrol: The Movie.
Blue and small, and standing only three apples tall, The Smurfs are set to make their Nickelodeon debut in an all-new series premiering Friday, Sept. 10, at 7:30 p.m. (ET/PT). The news was announced today by Nickelodeon, the number-one network for kids, and LAFIG Belgium and IMPS, the worldwide licensors for The Smurfs. All-new episodes will continue to rollout Friday nights on Nickelodeon and debut internationally in the fall.

The original series marks the return of the globally renowned characters to television for the first time in nearly 40 years and follows Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy, Hefty, Clumsy and the other inhabitants of Smurf Village on all-new adventures, packed with humor, heart and high-stakes action. In the premiere episode, “Smurf-Fu,” when Smurfette rescues Brainy from a giant snake, the other Smurfs ask her to teach them “Smurf-Fu.” Next in, “Diaper Daddy,” when everyone is tired of changing Baby’s diapers, Handy decides to invent a robot that will do the job.
Upcoming episodes include: "Clumsy Not Clumsy" (#102), "Unsmurfable Smile" (#103), "Who's Heftier?" (#104), "Smurfs In Disguise" (#105), "DRIIINNGGGGG!" (#106), "Alien Smurf" (#107), "Leaf It Alone" (#108) and "Bringing Up Smurfy" (#109).
Leading up to the premiere, Nickelodeon will treat viewers to a sneak-peak on Monday. September 6 at 12:30 p.m. (ET/PT). In the episode "Where's Papa Smurf?," because of a mishap, Papa Smurf disappears and the only way to make him visible again is to get a whisker from Azrael. (#104A)
The voice cast pushing the charm and absurdity of the original comics to even greater heights includes: David Freeman (7 Promises) as Papa Smurf, the father figure keeping the other Smurfs in line; Berangere McNeese (Matriochkas) as Smurfette, a curious Smurf who is always ready to take part in new adventures; Lenny Mark Irons (No Man’s Land) as Gargamel, a conniving human wizard with a bottomless thirst to capture Smurfs; Youssef El Kaoukibi (NRJ Belgium) as Brainy, who considers himself the smartest of the bunch; and Catherine Hershey (Boundary Games) as Willow, the brave and wise matriarch of a new tribe of girl Smurfs.
The Smurfs CG-animated series acquisition is overseen by Layla Lewis, Senior Vice President, Global Acquisitions and Content Partnerships and Dana Cluverius, Senior Vice President, Current Series Animation for Nickelodeon.
The brand-new series underscores Nickelodeon’s strategy to be the home of the biggest franchises kids and families love. The Smurfs expands Nickelodeon’s growing portfolio of influential properties that already includes SpongeBob SquarePants, The Patrick Star Show, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, PAW Patrol, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Blue’s Clues & You!, the all-new animated Star Trek: Prodigy series and the Transformers co-production.
The Smurfs is a Peyo Productions and Dupuis Audiovisuel production, in co-production with KiKA, Ketnet and RTBF, with the participation of TF1 and with the participation of Wallimage (La Wallonie), of Screen Flanders, of BNPPFFF and with the support of the Tax Shelter of the Belgian Government and the participation of the CNC.

‘The Smurfs’ Animated Movie Musical Set for December 2024 Release From Paramount and Nickelodeon
Pam Brady (“South Park,” “Team America”) will write the first of what will be multiple theatrical feature films
Paramount and Nickelodeon are set to begin production on a new animated movie musical based on “The Smurfs,” the first of what will be multiple theatrical feature films starring the beloved blue characters.
Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation are teaming with LAFIG Belgium and IMPS on the “Smurfs” films, tapping Pam Brady, the co-writer of “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut” and “Team America: World Police,” to write the first film. And the studio has also set the first of the movies to be released on Dec. 20, 2024, with production kicking off later this year.
As part of the announcement, Nickelodeon has also picked up the CG animated TV series “The Smurfs” for a second season of 26 episodes after the show first launched in September. Season 2 will follow Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy, Hefty, Clumsy and others as they time travel, invent a magic camera, accidentally swap bodies and more.
“The Smurfs” are the iconic blue creatures created by Belgian artist Pierre Culliford, known as Peyo, in the classic animated comics and TV series. The characters have been adapted to the big screen several times, including for a trio of live-action/animation hybrid films released by Sony, the most recent one from 2017, “Smurfs: The Lost Village.”
The 2024 movie will be produced by Nickelodeon Animation in partnership with Paramount Animation, LAFIG Belgium and IMPS.
Latifa Ouaou, EVP, Movies and Global Franchises, Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, will manage the LAFIG Belgium and IMPS partnership on behalf of the Studio and is in the process of identifying key creative leads, including the director for the first film. Additional details will be available soon.
“Nickelodeon is the home to some of the world’s most popular family franchises, and we’re honored to add The Smurfs to that roster,” Ramsey Naito, president of animation for Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, said in a statement. “We’re excited to tell a story that stays true to its origins, but with a Smurf-tastic musical twist that excites new audiences and builds on the Smurfs franchise and universe of wonderful characters and stories.”

I look so forward to seeing audiences gather together in the near future to enjoy this new adventure of our beloved Smurfs!”
“The Smurfs is an iconic and beloved franchise, and we can’t wait introduce it to a whole new generation of fans by bringing a fresh cinematic perspective to the Smurfs franchise with this all-new story on the big screen,” Ouaou said.
“The Smurfs” TV series since its launch has ranked among the top five animated series on cable for kids between 2-11.
ViacomCBS Consumer Products is also the consumer products licensing agent for “The Smurfs” property across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia and certain South American territories, and VCP will seek new merchandising and promotional partners for the brand, including a new product line for the animated series.
“The Smurfs” film is Nickelodeon Animation’s second CG-animated theatrical production, which also includes “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Chapter” from Seth Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures. That film is directed by Jeff Rowe, is currently in production and is slated for release on Aug. 4, 2023. Nickelodeon and Paramount also have a sequel in the works to “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie” from Spin Master Entertainment that’s due for release on Oct. 13, 2023.
Additional upcoming theatrical titles under Ouaou’s purview includes Paramount’s next animated feature “The Tiger’s Apprentice” (Feb. 10, 2023), starring Henry Golding, and the feature film strategy for Avatar Studios.
For the film, The Smurfs’ right owners are represented by WME’s Dave Wirtschafter, Rob Markus and Jordan Naftalis.

Some bad news. The movie got delayed to February 14, 2025.
Paramount Sets ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 3’ Release, Pushes Date For Smurfs Animated Musical
Paramount Pictures has unveiled a release date for its third Sonic the Hedgehog film, at the same time pushing back the date for its Untitled Smurfs Animated Musical. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will open wide on December 20, 2024, with the newest Smurfs pic going wide on February 14, 2025, having previously been set to unspool on the date now claimed by the former film.
While Sonic will open against James Cameron’s Avatar 3, it’s not yet clear what kind of box-office competition the new Smurfs pic has in store.
Based on the beloved video game franchise from Sega, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog franchise launched with a 2020 film of the same name, in which a small-town police officer (James Marsden) helped the titular blue hedgehog (Ben Schwartz) contend with Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), an evil genius looking to make him the subject of his experiments. Jeff Fowler directed from a script by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, with the film ultimately grossing over $319.7M worldwide. The sequel hit theaters in the U.S. in April and outdid the gross of the original, at over $400M worldwide.
While multiple Smurfs films, based on the Belgian comics, have been made in recent memory—including The Smurfs (2011), The Smurfs 2 (2013), and Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017)—those projects hailed from Sony.
Paramount confirmed its plans to make a third Sonic film back in February, announcing its upcoming Smurfs project—centered on the blue humanoid creatures of the same name—back at CinemaCon 2021.

Joining Rihanna are Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd and Xolo Maridueña with Kurt Russell and John Goodman.
Chris Miller directs a the new movie based on the Peyo characters. Matt Landon is co-director.
Ryan Harris, Rihanna, Laurence “Jay” Brown and Tyran “Ty-Ty” Smith are producers. Rihanna is penning original songs.
The movie hits theaters on February 14, 2025.

They really change all the voice actor from the previous movie. I hope these voice actors will fit to their roles. Still, I wonder why they change? the previous is already perfect.

Rihanna was heard for the first time in her highly-anticipated role as Smurfette.
The first footage from the 36-year-old mogul's - who appeared at an event for the launch of Fenty Hair in LA on Monday night - latest project - The Smurfs Movie - was unveiled at the Annecy Animation Festival on Tuesday according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Director Chris Miller had led the presentation at the event as he was joined by Paramount and Nickelodeon Animation president Ramsey Naito.
According to the weekly the duo had debuted work-in-progress footage from the film's opening sequence along with a demo version of original music.
As diehard Rihanna fans have been waiting for new music from the megastar for years they will be happy to know that she will be writing, producing and singing new original songs 'that will help inform the spirit of the movie' according to the publication.
Rihanna's latest project - The Smurfs Movie - was unveiled at the Annecy Animation Festival on Tuesday according to The Hollywood Reporter; she is seen at her Fenty Hair event in LA on Monday.
Rihanna was heard for the first time in her highly-anticipated role as Smurfette.
Rihanna will be voicing Smurfette in the project which is set for release next year on February 14, 2025.
She will be joined by an all-star voice cast including Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, Kurt Russell and John Goodman.
The film is based on the characters and work of artist Peyo as the art will be the base of the upcoming project's vision.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Miller explained: 'The DNA in Peyo’s original drawings guide so many creative choices in the film.
'It’s the blueprint for the kind of film I want to make. All of the action lines and thought bubbles from the comics are going in the movie, and the comics have inspired the style of animation to be fun and buoyant, with plenty of squash and stretch.'
In April 2023, Rihanna made a surprise appearance at CinemaCon Day Four in Las Vegas to announce she will voice Smurfette in the Paramount flick.
After the Grammy winner revealed she will lend her voice to the character of Smurfette in the live-action film, the performer humorously stated, per Variety, 'I tried to get the Papa Smurf role but it didn’t work out.'
According to Variety, the upcoming film will focus on a 'central' theme and question which simply is, 'What is a Smurf?'

The story has previously been shown on the big screen, including in 2011 with The Smurfs from Columbia Pictures which garnered around $563 million in the box office. Stars that lent their voices included Neil Patrick Harris and Katy Perry, who was cast as Smurfette.
A sequel was released two years later in 2013 to negative reviews, and a reboot with a new cast premiered in 2017 titled, Smurfs: The Lost Village.
Demi Lovato had voiced Smurfette with other celebrities joining the project, such as Rainn Wilson and Joe Manganiello.
