There is a Smurf movie coming out, but the projected release date has been pushed back a year. So no Year of Jubilee celebration for the Smurfs on the big screen.

Hello CatsDontDance. Welcome to Blue Buddies.
Yes, I agree with you about 3D animation, the characters just do not look as cute as cartoon animation. I'll take whatever I can get, though. It's been almost 20 years since the Smurfs ended and we haven't had anything new with the Smurfs in the media since, at least here in America.

That is not true. Most CG movies take a minimum of two years to create, sometimes as long as five years. CG is far more involved than even a live-action flick, and those generally take a minimum of 1-2 years. Even a television show takes 6-12 months to complete, from script to final edit.
From what we can see, Smurfs is not even into pre-production yet, meaning they've not even decided on a script.
Like the Johnny Bravo movie, this one might be over before it starts, especially since it's dragged on for years with nothing new to be said.
Plus the movie would be CG? And they have people like John Lithgow rumored to do voices? Yuck! Maybe we'd be better off without a movie?

I understand the fuzz about the 3D instead of 2D smurfs, but as I have understood, they’ve fought about the rights for this movie for five years! Do you really think they would have gotten the rights if the 3D smurfs would be too much different from the 2D smurfs? I think our smurfs will be just our same old smurfs, only in a somewhat more dimensional village…
I only hope the story is any good… And they don’t think up to many new angles or anything… Like said before in this forum: I don’t like the smurflings either… Hope they don’t invent new things like that!

Well, UNICEF did blow up the Smurfs real good recently so I'm not 100% sure they're committed to the same vision of the Smurfs we all have...

I'm sorry, but where on Wikipedia did you see that? The entry for the Smurfs film doesn't mention it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Smurfs

Great...what's next for the project? Development hell? There's a surefire way to turn off a great deal of potential future Smurf fans, while we continue to get things like Robot Chicken craptoons.
Personally, I'm also itching to see a full-blown 3D Smurfs game for the modern game systems -- one somewhere along the lines of Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, and Dak & Jaxter.

Ah, don't despair guys. I'm sure it will all work out and be somewhat decent if it comes out. I'm thinking they are overestimating here and the movie will be released earlier than 2010 if they do indeed push it back. Just hang in there.

This is old news actually, but yeah, it will be released in America. It's being produced by American companies, Paramount and Nickelodeon pictures I think.

I have been hearing about this Smurfs movie for quite sometime now. To respond to what you said, Amtrak Smurf, yeah I did happen to read on the Smurf entry on wikipedia that the film will be delayed until 2010, but like Shane just said it could come out earlier than that. (And of course on the wikipedia page about the movie, they still say it's coming out in November 2008 and on imdb as well.) Just remember one thing, you can't always believe everything you hear on wikipedia. Some of the info could be wrong.

That's right, never put full trust in Wikipedia. Since it's user based it's very possible the person who wrote 2010 was either misinformed or just mistaken.

Heard its 3D. I'd rather 2D but those animations don't get into theaters these days. It's a bummer, because one of the things I enjoy most about the smurfs is that it's so classic, and they take some of that away with the extra dimension. It's less "Saturday morning"-ish I also hope they don't make it too much like Nickelodeon, and fill it with dumb humor.

2009? Where did you hear that, 1DirXtion? Anyway, to respond to what maroon said, I did hear that Nickelodeon is also responsible for the making of the Smurfs movie and I also heard it was going to be done in CGI animation as well before I began visiting this site. Based on what everyone's been saying, I see it's true. Personally I don't mind it in CGI as long as the story line is well written and the humor is clean in contrast to the Dreamworks film Shrek, but knowing Nickelodeon, they always produce the lamest cartoons in the world like in their 2D works, Sponge Bob, Rugrats and Invader Zim. ![[Razz]](tongue.gif)

I don't mind 3D animation, as long as it's done right, which can make or break any 2D cartoon being converted into a 3D character.
