 A Smurfy CTN Presentation…
On Saturday, November 22, 2014, at the GIGANTICALLY ATTENDED CTN ANIMATION EXPO in Burbank, CA, I had the honor of hosting a panel which included some of the artistic leads on this all-new Smurf movie (we’re still working on the best possible title, but, when it is decided upon, this blog will be the first place you’ll see it!) The line-up included Production Designer Noelle Triaureau, Head of Story Brandon Jeffords, Art Directors Marcelo Vignali and Dean Gordon, and Character Designer Patrick Mate.
Together, we unveiled many exciting visual and character designs, as well as running clips of story reels, character animation tests and a special, fully realized “sizzle reel” demonstrating the closest thing we have yet to how fresh, funny and new this very Peyo influenced movie will be.
The audience seemed very pleased, even more than once breaking out in applause at the sight of our new environments and characters.
Brandon Jeffords topped off the event by performing a live story pitch, complete with storyboards, from one of our more lively and hilarious sequences depicting Gargamel being once again thwarted by Papa and his Young Smurfs…and the laughs came right where I wanted them!
I can’t wait until next year!

Have a Smurfy Turkey Day!
What are the chances of finding these classic Smurfs figurines at a yard sale?
My sister generously gifted these to me - they’ll fit in nicely as place settings at my Thanksgiving dinner table!
Thanks Sis!

 Smurfin’ Around The Christmas Tree!
This great bit of 2D dancing Smurf animation is from Sony Pictures Animation’s fun holiday short film, THE SMURFS: A CHRISTMAS CAROL (2011), which was directed by my buddy Troy Quane. The short is very true to Peyo’s “look” and possesses the type of fun we’re striving for with our all-new CG animated Smurf movie.
It’s always a challenge to interpret a traditional 2D cartoon into a more dimensional world, but my artistic team and I are really enjoying the challenge. I can’t wait to unveil the results.

What is the link to the director's blog? It used to be in this thread. I've scrolled every page in this thread and they have all been replaced by images hosted here at BlueBuddies. That's fine, but all I ask is that you please keep the original link to the actual source it's from underneath the item hosted here. Because now I have no way to get to the guy's site and I want to post some comments and give him some feedback. Please leave the original links here in addition to hosting the material here. Thank you. If anyone can give me the link to his actual blog site, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Drawing A Smurf
A fan asked me the following…
"What’s the most difficult part of a Smurf to draw in your opinion? I find the legs the worst." - UncleGargy
I find the overall proportions in general are tricky. Now, I’m no expert at drawing Smurfs - as my blog regularly demonstrates - but I’m learning with each attempt. Generally, I start by drawing a familiar, classic, age-old cartoon character shape that has been around for decades - similar to a certain famous cartoon rodent one might have seen somewhere before. I give the head an egg shape, add the ears and big floppy hat (It always works best drawn larger than I initially think it should), then those cartoony dots for eyes and…well…it looks sort of like a Smurf…Of course, the color blue certainly seals the deal! As I said, I’m no expert at drawing Smurfs, but I seem to be getting by well enough.
Check back Wednesday morning for a special surprise in store which involves our own expert on the film discussing the topic at hand!

NEWS: The Untitled Smurfs Movie's release date had now been moved to March 31st, 2017.
SMURFY NEWS FLASH!!!
FOR THE GOOD OF ALL THINGS SMURFY: A NEW RELEASE DATE…MARCH 31, 2017
I want nothing more than for this ALL-NEW ANIMATED SMURF MOVIE REBOOT to be the very best ever depiction of the Smurfs since the original Peyo comic books. Since this new film has no connection to the previous live action hybrids, we have a whole new world to create and it is critical to me and my crew that we deliver a movie that will enchant families and fans worldwide for years to come.
So when my partners and I here at Sony Pictures Animation realized that rushing towards a summer 2016 release date meant having to launch production on a story that was not fully in the place we wanted it to be yet, we have decided to give ourselves a little more time to not compromise quality and deliver the truly smurftastic movie we all want to see on the big screen.
Our new release date, March 31, 2017, is a perfect opportunity to be sprung with the Smurfs in Spring! The Easter date is a perfect match for this particular movie for fans around the world.
Get ready to experience an all-new adventure unrelated to the first two Smurfs films. Now with more time to work with, we’re delivering the best movie possible without compromising - I could not be more happy!
More updates soon…

Sony Sets Animated ‘Smurfs’ Film For March 31, 2017 Release
By Mike Fleming Jr.
March 25, 2015 4:26pm
BREAKING: Sony Pictures Animation has set for March 31, 2017 global release an untitled animated Smurfs film, which means it will bow during the Easter holiday. This will be a new fully animated on the blue crew that propelled the live action Smurfs franchise.
The first Smurfs movie, released in July 2011, ended up making $563.7M worldwide. The second in Columbia’s franchise, released in 2013, grossed $347.5M worldwide. Animation tends to travel well overseas. The voice cast for the new animated film is being put together now. There are no other films scheduled for that weekend, however, the following weekend 20th Century Fox is releasing and animated Ferdinad, also geared to kids.
“With a fully animated feature close in tone and design to Peyo’s original creation, we’re embracing everything that has made the Smurfs so special for audiences worldwide,” said Rory Bruer, president, SPE Worldwide Distribution. “The date is a perfect match for this movie. With the kids on break, every day plays like summer, and for franchises with global appeal like the Smurfs, audiences are ready to turn out for great entertainment.”
The film is being directed by Shrek 2‘s Kelly Asbury, produced by Jordan Kerner (The Smurfs) and co-produced by Mary Ellen Bauder (Hotel Transylvania). They’re setting the voice cast now.

The New Smurfs Movie Moves to 2017
March 25, 2015
By Silas Lesnick
Sony Pictures Animation announced today that their still-untitled animated Smurfs movie, previously set for release August 5, 2016, will now arrive a bit later than originally anticipated. It is now the first film to claim a March 31, 2017 release.
The film, which is said to mark a brand new, fully-animated take on the beloved blue creatures, is being directed by Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2, Gnomeo & Juliet), produced by Jordan Kerner (Charlotte’s Web, The Smurfs) and co-produced by Mary Ellen Bauder (Hotel Transylvania).
“With a fully animated feature close in tone and design to Peyo’s original creation, we’re embracing everything that has made the Smurfs so special for audiences worldwide,” says Rory Bruer, president, Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures. “The date is a perfect match for this movie. With the kids on break, every day plays like summer, and for franchises with global appeal like the Smurfs, audiences are ready to turn out for great entertainment.”
Asbury himself took to the film’s official production blog with his own statement:
I want nothing more than for this ALL-NEW ANIMATED SMURF MOVIE REBOOT to be the very best ever depiction of the Smurfs since the original Peyo comic books. Since this new film has no connection to the previous live action hybrids, we have a whole new world to create and it is critical to me and my crew that we deliver a movie that will enchant families and fans worldwide for years to come.

I hope this movie doesn't turn into a carrot stick that the producers keep baiting us with.

I always thought they were not going to use Katy Perry in this movie because she was a pop star and not really an actress, but now they'll use another pop star (but Demi's an actress too), hmmm... I think they need a hook, let's just wait... And I felt I little sad because I really liked Hank Azaria, but just by listening to Wilson's voice I think he's going to be a good voice for Gargamel, and same with Patinkin and Papa Smurf, I'm neutral with Demi and Smurfette because I'm really used to Lucille's and even Katy's voice for Smurfette, and for some reason I can't imagine her with another voice, so as I already said, let's just wait...
