In related news, Joan Rivers, who appeared in the 2011 Smurfs movie as one of the guests of Odile's promotional party, has died today.

Comedic Legend Joan Rivers Dies at 81

By Lynn Elber

Published September 3, 2014 / Updated on January 29, 2015 at 11:01 am

Joan Rivers, the raucous, acid-tongued comedian who crashed the male-dominated realm of late-night talk shows and turned Hollywood red carpets into danger zones for badly dressed celebrities, died Thursday in New York. She was 81.

Her daughter Melissa Rivers said her mother died peacefully at 1:17 p.m., surrounded by family and friends, at Mount Sinai Hospital, where she had been on life support for days.

She had been hospitalized since last week, when she stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest following a routine throat procedure at a doctor's office. Health officials opened an investigation Thursday into the Yorkville Endoscopy clinic where she had been treated, NBC 4 New York reported.

"My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh," Melissa Rivers said in her statement Thursday. "Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon."

Rivers - who made "Can we talk?" a trademark of her routines - never mellowed during her half-century-long career. She had insults ready for all races, genders and creeds. She moved from longtime targets like the weight problems of Elizabeth Taylor, of whom she said "her favorite food is seconds," to newer foes such as Miley Cyrus, and continued to appear on stage and on TV into her 80s.

Comedy was not only her calling, but her therapy, as she turned her life inside out for laughs, mocking everything from her proclaimed lack of *** appeal ("My best birth control now is just to leave the lights on") to even her own mortality.

"I have never wanted to be a day less than I am," she insisted in a 2013 interview with The Associated Press. "People say, 'I wish I were 30 again.' Nahhh! I'm very happy HERE. It's great. It gets better and better. And then, of course, we die," she quipped.

The Brooklyn-born Rivers became a household name in the 1960s after several high-profile appearances on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" and the launch of her syndicated daytime talk show, "That Show."

She went on to become a film director, writer and actress, a best-selling author and the writer of a Grammy Award-nominated comedy album. She won NBC's "The Celebrity Apprentice" in 2011 and was the host of "Fashion Police" on the E! Network, recording her final episode only days before she was hospitalized in New York.

What would a Smurf movie be without that dastardly Gargamel involved? As we finalize the villain’s design, we pay attention to every detail, including his big, floppy feet.

As always, I’m a stickler at making sure we are as true to Peyo’s original designs as possible. Peyo drew Gargamel in a very cartoony way, and we have to design him to animate in a believable, yet entertaining manner. We are in the process of creating several animation tests, exploring how Gargamel will move and act.

Expect his big feet to bring about some much-deserved giggles.

Stay tooned!

Peach Pie Pitch Party!

“Pitch”…”Peach”…Get it?

Recently I tasked the entire story team to each come up with at least 5 funny ideas for a scene taking place in Smurf Village. After a week, we all gathered for a big, hour long Pitch Party. It was productive and fun…and sweet!

Work, fun and food DO go together, especially on a Friday!

A Tribute To The Note Takers…

In every meeting I’ve covered in this blog, there is always at least one Smurf Team Member present who is assigned the important (and very appreciated) duty of taking thorough notes, transcribing all the many ideas and opinions set forth by everyone present.

Needless to say, this is no small task.

Sifting through all the many things that are said in these meetings is one big job and I could not keep track of anything without my Smurfy team!

A Story Department Pizza Lunch!

Recently, head of Story Brandon Jeffords and I hosted a “State of the Movie” Story Department lunch (complete with pizza), during which we pitched out all the current - and always shifting - new ideas. I like to have these meetings on a regular basis, just to make sure everyone is as aware as possible of the movie’s direction.

Smurfing The Story Reel!

Recently, our Editor, Mr. H. Lee Peterson, gave me a sneak peek at a rough assemblage of storyboarded footage for the entire movie! While it was indeed very preliminary, it was very helpful for me as the director to have the opportunity to “step back from the canvas” (see earlier post) and assess how things are shaping up.

We use temporary voices, sound effects and music in the story reel to help us design the overall pacing. It’s an invaluable tool in building an animated movie and becomes the true blueprint for the final version. We constantly improve on it and revise it until all the pieces are firmly in place.

This movie will be one crackling fun Smurf adventure, featuring all the characters we love…and full of some new surprises.

Smurfing The “Assets”

A lot of my time in the art department is spent approving assets. I look at many choices for the same thing which usually narrows down to two or three variations of a given asset, which can be used for a variety of purposes in the movie.

Assets are our friends!

Down To The Tiniest Blade Of Grass…

Almost every day I approve new assets for the art department, which are then turned over to the digital department, where it all gets built and textured. Every leaf, tree, flower and blade of grass is meticulously designed and constructed for a 3D environment.

This all-new Smurf movie is going to be lush with Belgian forest greenery, all depicted in a style very reflective of Peyo’s original world…but unlike flat illustrations in a comic book. Notice how each blade of grass is shaped in a way that Peyo himself might have drawn it - like a quick, fluid brush stroke. I’ve requested this type of design on all sorts of elements in the movie, such as strands of hair on some of the characters. It will be as if Peyo’s world is REAL!

Bruges From A Peyo Perspective

I was recently asked the following:

“Will Bruges be one of the main locations in the movie? How will the medieval buildings be transformed to a 3d environment?” - Kind regards, Koen Theuns

As this example shows, we will be depicting Bruges, Belgium in cartoon shapes reminiscent of Peyo’s original comics. All designs of this type will translate beautifully in 3D, lending a tactile reality to the rich world we are creating for the Smurfs.

Now, I can’t at this time divulge too much about the story, but I will say that many discussions are underway regarding the beautiful city of Bruges, both pre and post Renaissance. So stay tuned as things further develop.

What’s In A Bluebell?

My all new Smurfs movie takes place largely in an enchanted Belgian forest, somewhere near the ancient city of Bruges. Now, one of the many things Belgium is famous for is its beautiful fields of bluebells - the most prominent of which grow near the area where Smurfs creator Peyo lived.

As my team and I have been developing the story for the movie, (which will deal very much in the origins of the Smurfs featuring elements of time travel and magic) I’ve become quite focused on the idea that those amazing Belgian bluebells might play a significant role in Smurfs’ history…but I won’t give it all away here!

Those delicate little blue blossoms might hold enchanted surprises you’ll simply have to wait for.

Keep checking back for more hints as to what’s in store.

Every time I direct a movie, be it about horses, ogres or garden gnomes, friends from all over send me tokens depicting the given subject matter. Now, I have a growing collection of SMURFS! Smurfs of all types, shapes and sizes. By the time this all new movie is released in 2016, I expect to have my very own SMURFS SHRINE.

I know the new film will be completely CGI but I wouldn't mind seeing a live-action reboot film directed by James Cameron as seen in my own post:

The "bluebells thing" is something I would like to see as a flashback in the James Cameron version!

The Smurfs and the Howlibird

Peyo’s “Howlibird”…

As I’ve stated before, my primary intention for this all-new Smurfs comedy-adventure is to honor the original work of the property’s creator, Peyo. One such way I am doing that is by including as many references as possible to his early comics.

Therefore, in this new movie will appear a rather updated version of Peyo’s dreaded “Howlibird” (the original comic book designed pictured here).

At the present time, I won’t spoil just how this winged threat figures into the story, but suffice it to say that Howlibird will contribute to more than one surprise twist.

And, I promise, it will all result in high flying FUN!

Meet Patrick Mate… Character Designer and Lifelong Smurf Fan!

I’m very proud to report that I have worked with the very talented Patrick Mate on previous movies, including my first directorial effort, SPIRIT - STALLION OF THE CIMARRON (2002), as well as PRINCE OF EGYPT (1998), on which I was Head of Story. Patrick was born and raised in France, resulting in his being readily availed the original Peyo Smurf comic books. He was probably drawing Smurfs before he could read!

Patrick is my in-house go-to guy for anything regarding the look of a true Smurf…and he’s also fun to work with.

Here, he answers my Smurfy Questionnaire:

KA: What is the job of a Character Designer on an animated feature film?
PM: To create memorable characters that you can’t wait to buy as a toy.

KA: Do you have a favorite Smurf?
PM: Astronaut Smurf.

KA: If you were a Smurf, what would your name be?
PM: Artsy Smurf. His temper, his beret…it has to be me.

KA: So far while working on this all new Smurfs movie, what has been a fun or favorite behind-the-scenes moment?
PM: The Peach Pie Pitch Party! PPPP hooray!

KA: If you could have one magic power, what would it be?
PM: The power to cure.

Thanks Patrick! Everyone keep checking back for more fun Smurfy stuff from Patrick, as well as other people from my movie making team!

Think. Think. Think…

I’m constantly sketching tiny thumbnail drawings as part of my “figure it out” process before I assign a storyboard artist to a sequence. I’m usually the only one who sees these little doodles, but they are invaluable to me as the director. They help me see what I’m thinking as I think it. It’s almost as if I’m trying to crack some mystical code for myself and helps me proceed with confidence.

And Now A Word From Smurfy Production Designer Noelle Triaureau…

Thank you Kelly for having me share my Smurf experience at the View Conference in Turin, Italy. The View is an international festival on digital cinema which brings together professionals and students in 3D animation, visual effects, and interactive technologies.

Marcelo and I had the pleasure to present the first fully computer generated Smurf Movie at the View, or I should say the “I Puffi” Movie as the Smurfs are known in Italy. We showed a number of Visual Development artwork of Smurfs, Gargamel and Azrael, as well as the Smurf village, a medieval human town, Smurf props, vegetation and forest animals.

The audience who grew up reading Peyo’s smurf comics, were very excited to see that this film is visually going back to the original designs and that there is going to be new characters and environments. There was a lot of applause at the Smurf and Gargamel animation tests and the sizzle we showed made everybody laugh. During the Q&A, someone said that he hoped the whole film will look like the visual development pieces. Among the questions raised, someone asked if the story would also be based on the comics. Although we could not give any details on the plot, we mentioned that it is going to be a completely original and fun story, and is going to answer many questions fans may have about the Smurfs.

Meet Art Director Marcelo Vignali…

Thanks Kelly, for letting me share my experience at the VIEW Conference in Turin, Italy. The VIEW Conference really provides a cutting edge experience for those working in the industry of animation and those looking to get into the industry — offering some of the top professionals sharing their insights and experience. As a presenter, I have to say the trip to attend the conference was really an incredible experience. The audience in Turin was really receptive to our Sony Pictures Animation Smurf presentation.

Our production designer Noelle Triaureau and I were really excited to show Turin the new look we’ve been developing on our upcoming new Smurfs movie. Most people weren’t aware that this isn’t a hybrid combination of live-action and CG animation like Smurfs I and II, but rather a whole new take on the Smurfs property — an entire reboot of the Smurfs franchise. We called our presentation, “Going Back to Peyo” [Pierre Culliford (25 June 1928 – 24 December 1992), known as Peyo, was a Belgian comics artist, perhaps best known for the creation of The Smurfs comic strip].

Looking out into the crowd, I could see there were some skeptical faces, but the skepticism soon turned to excitement and cheers as we showed Turin what we’ve been developing for the last year at Sony Pictures Animation. We showed artwork, character designs, a storyboard sequence, several CG model prototypes, walk cycles and a short animated sequence.

Much of the environments we’re creating for this new Smurfs movie are direct interpretations of Peyo’s comic book versions of the Smurfs and their world. Even the Smurf characters had a whole new “Back to Peyo” approach to their design, bringing them closer to that version of the Smurfs that European audiences fell in love with. When we showed Papa Smurf’s new design and walk cycle, we literally drew cheers and applause from the audience. Suffice it to say, they loved our back to Peyo approach.

Overall I would have to say the Smurf presentation was really well received. Judging from the reaction of the audience at the VIEW Conference in Turin, I’d have to say we’re on the right track!

Thanks for letting us share our experience on your blog.
