More Smurfy News! Papa Smurf has been cast! comedian/actor Jonathan Winters will be playing the oldest, wisest, and grayest of The Smurfs -- Papa Smurf!!!
http://movies.ign.com/articles/106/1068349p1.html
Also more casting info and some plot points have been released!
http://screenrant.com/smurf-movie-script-details-benk-44741/
* Also, I have been informed that at the start of the film Gargamel gets angry that he keeps failing at catching himself some smurfs so he (knowing one day he will die)casts an eternal spell on himself and his beloved feline azrael so, that one fateful day he will get a smurf! Then the film sets it's self up for a modern tale..clumsy smurf gets lost(mistaken for a smurf plush!) and it's up to papa and the rest of the smurfs to save clusmy and his new friends and defeat gargamel and azrael!
Wallace Shawn is said to have the part of Gargamel. And as for azrael I've been told she will be cgi and her voice will be provided by Frank Welker.
Have a Smurfy day!

Once more, thanks for the super news, SmurfyD! By the way, it won't be the first time Jonathan Winters shall take part in a Smurf adventure; in HB cartoons he had played some additional voices. I wonder if , besides Azrael (originally played by late Don Messick) Frank shall voice Hefty Smurf (Poet, Wild) as he did in the cartoon show, too? I don't remember Wallace Shawn's voice very well, but I saw some pictures of himself in IMDb; since he'll be Gargy, shall he incorporate the wizard or simply voice him?? ![[Gargamel]](graemlins/gargamel.gif)

What a good question, Squeaky! Will Wallace Shawn act the part of Gargamel or will he simply voice the part of Gargamel? I think they could dress him up to look like Gargamel... surely they'll give him pants though!

Here is a summary.

First Smurf Movie Details Escape The Forest
by Ben Kendrick
Here is an exclusive casting call for two lead roles in the upcoming Smurfs live action film:
[GRACE] 26 – 35 years old… a first-time expectant mother, she’s faced with juggling both an overworked husband and, ultimately, a household full of Smurfs. Should be lovely, maternal and have good comedic energy.sptv050769..MAJOR SUPPORTING ROLE.
[ODILE] Late 20’s to mid-40’s… Foreign: European (French, Spanish, Italian), British, Latin American, French Canadian, etc. A beautiful, charming (when she wants to be), high-powered executive. She runs a high-end French cosmetics company. Strong comedic ability essential. MAJOR SUPPORTING ROLE.
The roles definitely point to the notion that movie-going audiences won’t be spending much time inside forest mushroom huts, and will likely be spending a greater percentage of the film watching as the Smurfs cause mischief in our modern world.
I don't understand why screenwriters tend to position eighties cartoon adaptations in "the real world." The whole point of children's cartoons is to escape into magical fantasy lands, outside the confines of a child’s daily routine, encouraging them to use imagination – something sorely lacking in most of these cartoon-to-film adaptations.
The casting of an "executive" type character, is especially troubling. It seems likely The Smurfs film is on the same slapstick nonsense ride that produced two terrible Alvin and the Chipmunks films (not to mention compromised our normally enthusiastic feelings about David Cross). What's next? The Gummi Bears are ripped from Gummi Glen and forced by a dastardly executive to play in the NBA?
On the other hand, Raja Gosnell is still attached to the project, which gives us a bit of hope that The Smurfs will follow closer to the approach Gosnell took in the first Scooby Doo film (which at least captured some of the Scooby Doo essentials). Of course, that's like saying we hope for a mild car-crash instead of a full train-wreck.
Don't expect Smurf Village to be ready for the holidays. Sony Pictures has pushed the film back to July 29, 2011, sparing the film from a David vs. Goliath (or Smurf vs. Gargamel) sized showdown against Yogi Bear, Tron Legacy, and Seth Rogen’s The Green Hornet which are scheduled for December 2010.
What do you think about the Smurfs leaving Smurf Village in favor of invading your neighborhood?
Papa Smurf Lives! Which 84-year-old actor is going blue?
by Scott Collura
February 10, 2010 - Yes, a Smurfs movie is happening. And yes, it's in CGI. And yes, "big" names are going to be cast in it… or, if today's news is any indication, big names circa 1968 are being cast in it.
According to UGO, ancient comedian/actor Jonathan Winters will be playing that oldest, wisest, and grayest of Smurfs -- Papa Smurf.
Don't know who Winters is? Well, you should, as he's a comic legend. He was a Tonight Show regular back when that meant something, has appeared in dozens of films and TV shows including It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, and even could play dramatic roles at times (check out that Twilight Zone episode "A Game of Pool" where he starred opposite Jack Klugman). He also was present and accounted for when Mork & Mindy jumped the shark in its final season and he became a regular cast member, playing the pair's grown man-child son. Mearth!
Raja Gosnell (Scooby-Doo) is directing the Smurfs film, which is scheduled for both 3D and 2D releases at the end of this year.

 Wallace Shawn as Gargamel
That's just my doubt, Sassette... I really wish I knew whether Gargy shall be rendered the same way as our dear blue buddies or Mr. Shawn will be dressed in that old black robe and red shoes, since there will be 'real' actors in the movie. Though this might sound a bit strange (my opinion), if Azrael is really depicted in cgi. Thanks for the great job, Smurfy1For2!! Once more, you made our day!! Like me, the author seems a bit worried about the Smurfs' new appearance. The one from the teaser is very adorable (as I mentioned before), but I imagined they would be made up in 3-D effect according to their original shape. I only hope the original humor shall be preserved at least (sorry if I'm being very repetitive, fellows)... ![[Roll Eyes]](rolleyes.gif)

They're going to be in our modern time? That really sucks. They are supposed to live deep in the forest somewhere in Europe (probably Belgium) in the middle ages. They can't have them in our time like this. That's just wrong. If the family of Peyo really had to approve this project like the first article we read about two years ago, it makes me wonder why they would approve of THIS. I want the mushroom houses deep in the European forest from the middle ages.

No Worries! At the start of the film the timeline is set in the middle times as Gargamel and Azreal are hunting smurfs! Yes Shawn will BE gargamel not providing Gargamel's voice! However Azrael will be CGI.
* Take it as a rumor sony is still casting if or when I hear more news I will post here!

Got some weird choices there. Jonathan Winters as the voice of Papa Smurf, whereas he was formerly Grandpa Smurf in the cartoon show, and Wallace Shawn (Grand Nagus Zek in Star Trek: Deep Space 9) as Gargamel.

That's a very smurfy news you got to told us SmurfyD1983! The brief story which is quite a good one but i see that the today's hollywood movie just try to take a too high goal that makes them their so many movies "flop" In this case The smurfs movie are also in that category But fortunately our smurf have the very strong basic story which can't make the story goes more worse or far good than this in the one point that they goes smurfing through our big real world It's a good idea but mounts itself a lot of risks and i hope that they didn't leave the cartoon's classic story for too much... But i very smurtisfy about which are going to be papa smurf which is the Jonathan winters! I never know him before i just kinda have "dejavu" sort of thing. If he really gonna be papa smurf that would be great! While most of these info are subject to change so i'll stay tuned for more smurfy news from you SmurfyD1983! ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Good News! The Smurfs Movie Starts Filming Next Month!!! Now, for the Bad? Good? News... Neil Patrick Harris got the Human Lead! No word on who he will be playing .. I was told he may be Johan .The Script has been re-written and I haven't been able to see it but I hear the plot is somewhat different!
Neil Patrick Harris will star in Sony's big screen adaptation of The Smurfs, says Deadline Hollywood. He won't be voicing one of the Smurfs though as the project is a mix of live-action and animation. Harris will play the lead live-action character.
The site says that filming begins in April, when Harris will be on hiatus from CBS' "How I Met Your Mother." The Raja Gosnell-directed film is scheduled for a July 29, 2011 release.
"The Smurfs" were created in 1958 by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, known throughout the world as Peyo. "The Smurfs," originally called "Les Schtroumpfs" in French, were created for a Belgian series of comic books, first as minor characters. The villagers, known for their blue skin and small statures, spawned a line of statuettes, games, toys, theme parks and a hit TV series, which ran as part of NBC's Saturday-morning lineup from 1981-90.

Just finished reading the premise for the storyline.
I'm not very thrilled that they've chosen to fit into our mixed up modern world.
Hollywood can do good when they feel like it. But they get very carried away with The Eye Candy.
We'll see.
