My roommate and I have a smurf bet going. He insists that Gargomel wanted to catch the smurfs because he had a spell that would turn them into gold. I say it was because he wanted to eat them. I've read on other websites that he wanted to do both so I figured I'd stop by the BBS and see what more hardcore fans say.

So, which do you guys say it was?

Actually, it's both, since Gargamel in several different episodes sings this little jingle that says what he's going to do with all the little Smurfs he will capture. I don't remember right off hand how that jingle goes, though.
