Since this is the Smurfs bulletin board and is the appropriate place to discuss anything related to the Smurfs, I came upon a Youtube video that discuss whether the Smurfs are racists and anti-Semities. It is from the AFP (Associate Foreign Press).
It is quite different from the past allegations that the Smurfs are Communists or Socialists, so it is an interesting video to watch and discuss.
From the AFP Youtube description: quote: They've foiled the evil Gargamel time and again -- but now the Smurfs could be facing their biggest threat yet, from social commentators who say the blue-skinned cartoon characters are purveyors of racism and anti-Semitism. A new book out in France reviews the ideological battles over the Smurfs -- and shows Papa Smurf, Smurfette and the rest of the gang in a whole new light.

If anything, the only kind of racism I've seen with the Smurfs is that against humans, given what Papa Smurf knows about them and their constant interactions with them, and even that was mild. All the Smurfs want to do is to live in peaceful isolation from people, and it's people like Gargamel who want to destroy them for their own selfish reasons.

It's no use, there's always somebody to insist on finding any odd things in Smurf stories! It's not already the first time ever I heard of things like that(Communism, Nazism, so on) and I once even read a comment in a site which tells about an urban legend the Smurfs represent the Ku Klux Klan (!!) due to their white caps, since Papa wears a red one - and so did the leader of that secret society! Let Mother Nature preserve the Smurfs from all of that nonsense. They don't deserve it, and Peyo much least. ![[Frown]](frown.gif)

And yet The Smurfs DO interact with humans whether they like it or not.
As anyone will tell you. No person is an Island. Everybody entwines around each other.

The only racism I have with my fanfiction stories is the Psyches' view of Smurfs being a "savage tribe" due to their phobia of nudity (the actual term is gymnophobia, part of which we get the word gymnastics), which is part of why Empath dresses the way he does, being raised up to feel ashamed of himself as a member of a "savage race". I'm still playing in my head a story sequence where Empath confronts its leader the Psyche Master, who secretly is a Smurf hiding behind a column of light, and threatens to expose him to the rest of the Psyches for who he really was, all for the purpose of having his friend Polaris Psyche released into his custody. As for how the other Psyches treated Empath during his stay in Psychelia prior to his release, I would say that they were kept somewhat in the dark about Empath's true origin and basically just considered him as a "prototype Psyche". The only ones who really knew what Empath was were the Psyche Master and Polaris Psyche.

that's all a bunch of bullcrap I ever heard, like if you want to be Communist, be a human and try to take over a country with the help of China (People's Republic of China), North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) or Cuba (or the Soviet union/USSR from 1917 to 1990), not saying that anyone's communist on this site, but here's a fact, Smurfs are not into politics, as they are a species of creatures, almost like natives, that often work and eat to survive, they have smurfberries, and like natives, they defeat their enemy, it would be impossible to have a sense of politics and racism among the smurfs because they do their best to avoid human (regardless of colour), but they do have some human friends and animal friends too, they live in the wild. Despite some features that almost look similar.. (Swoofs taking the appearance of Native Indian and Black people, Papa Smurf looking like Karl Marx and Gargamel, Hogatha and Bignose looking like Jews) the creators nor Peyo were intending to offend those types, they have great ideas, this happens a lot.
Feel free to debate me on this

I have a Christian Smurf in my fanfiction series, but at least he's not as insane-sounding as that person, whom I'd use more as a caricature in my stories. I still have that Word of Faith preacher caricature named Benedictus (named for Benny Hinn) that I have yet to use in a story.

Squeaky: It's times like these I wish I was Vexy so I could beat the smurf out of the dunderhead who made this claim.
Outside the Smurf Village, I am an evangelical Christian and a member of the Calvary Chapel churches, and as such even I recognize the linked quote as an absurdity and a pack of nonsense. The original quote is from Gary Greenwald, a controversial and discredited Christian evangelist who spearheaded the so-called "Satanic Panic" of the early 1980's and saw the devil in virtually anything. The following link from RationalWiki is an article about Mr. Greenwald with references.
Gary Greenwald - RationalWiki article
Greenwald originally said this along with guest Phil Phillips on his "Eagle's Nest" program on the Trinity Broadcasting Network back in 1984. And even then as a teenager I knew right away it was all a bunch of smurf, to put it nicely.
Among Mssrs. Greenwald and Phillips' absurd claims:
- The Smurfs are promoting death because of their blue skin and black lips. Black and blue are the colors of death. Any cartoonist can tell you the black lips are from the black ink the Smurfs are drawn in. Even my own Christian cartoons outside BlueBuddies are really satanic if you follow these hucksters' claims.
- The Smurfs are really all gay because there are no other females except for Smurfette, who is really a transgendered male Smurf. I have no idea where Mr. Phillips got the bizarre idea about Smurfette, other than he may have made it up on the spot. He obviously never read "The Smurfette" or saw the TV episode of the same name. The later addition of Sassette, Nanny, Vexy and even Clockwork Smurfette smurf that lie to smithereens. The gay argument has traditionally been made about only one Smurf, Vanity, and even that is debatable since he seems only attracted to his own mirror image (a narcissist).
- Gargamel is promoting Satanism because he invokes incantations, lights candles, reads from sorcery books and uses pentagrams. Gargy's spells are often comical in nature and always end in epic failure because he's such an incompetent wizard. I remember the pentagram from a specific episode and it wasn't even drawn right! The Book of Spells that Gargamel uses is a sarcastic, cranky book that always insults its dorky owner. And if a Christian is scared at even the sight of an incorrectly-drawn pentagram, St. James writes in his epistle that such a person's faith is weak and unstable.
I can go on and on about the lies Mssrs. Greenwald and Phillips make about our little friends, which are still being peddled 30 years later. Greenwald himself over the years has been discredited and busted for his outright lies, only to lay low, wait for his followers to forgive and forget, then start up all over again. We American Christians are sadly very gullible to the point that we forgive everybody, even those that repeatedly deceive and swindle us, because to exercise discernment (i.e. use the brains God gave us) isn't loving.
Personally, I am thankful the Lord brought the Smurfs back into my life last year during a very difficult and trying period. The new friends I've made online and in person, the raised interest in my cartoon talents, and now my applying to graduate school are all a direct result of my Smurf fan art. My friends in Calvary Chapel enthusiastically support my work and pray that it leads to a full-time job in animation or illustration... and they don't think I'm working for the devil. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

I wholesmurfedly trust Mother Nature will protect our friends. She also has commitments from Jokey, Natasha Fatale, Nell Fenwick, Rocky the Flying Squirrel, Witch Hazel, Tweety's owner Granny, George of the Jungle's wife Ursula, Grammi Gummi and even little Cindy Lou Who to stand up for our Smurfs! (All are voiced by June Foray, 96 years young.) ![[Smurfette]](graemlins/smurfette.gif)

So Gargamel worships the powers of darkness...SO SMURFING WHAT? What were they expecting him to be, if he's supposed to be evil? Somehow the idea of an evil evangelical preacher in children's entertainment just wouldn't fly in their moral world view. Or worse, maybe it would hit too close to home, considering the behavior of certain evangelical preachers.
Just as an interesting note, in my adaptations of some cartoon episodes where I have my character Tapper substituting for the adult Nat (who doesn't exist in my series), he does get somewhat Pentecostal when dealing with dangerous animals.

My sentiments exactly, Vic. In the end, the wacked-out reputations of Greenwald and Phillips disqualify them from even opening up their mouths to begin with. As I said in my first reply, if we took such "certain evangelical preachers" seriously, then that means even I am under the influence of Satan because all my cartoon characters have black lips (from black ink), even my Christian cartoons drawn for my church website the past 10 years.
As Daffy Duck would say, "Ha ha. Very funny. Har har. It is to laugh."
Going forward, I will keep on smurfin' on with my fan art, regardless of what those knuckleheads say.
