...do with the Smurfs as they did with the Anime Kimba the White Lion? What I mean to say is that I looked on IMDb the other day and found a topic posted by ja kitty 71 surrounding references from The Little Mermaid in the episode Handy's Sweetheart, but Handy's Sweetheart aired on television in 1983 and Disney's fluffy adaption of Hans Christian Anderson's famous novel came out in 1989. Here's the link to the post:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081933/board/nest/162959004

Meanwhile, ja kitty 71 is right about the similarities, however, the only way Disney could say their mermaid lives in Atlantica and says the same line as Marina from the Smurfs is either Disney just copied this knowing Marina is not a well known character or this is just typical of all mermaid related stories.

I just thought about that because Disney copied off Osamu Tezuka's popular manga, Kimba in 1994 in the production of the Lion King. According to sources, the Lion King was intended to be a remake of Kimba, but later denied that considering Kimba is lesser known in the US. They were able to get away with it as a result. Here's the link:

http://www.kimbawlion.com/rant2.htm

Maybe I could be wrong about Disney stealing off that one Smurf episode.

Disney is not exactly known for its original works!! Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio... All NOT written by Disney!!!

So its not a shocker if they "borrowed" from the Smurfs..I totally agree about Kimba, they totally used that story, so why not the Smurfs!!

wow, to think of it, i actually recently watched the little mermaid and have seen Hany's Sweetheart, but never really thought of the comparisons of both of them. But i mean every one copies from bigger tv or movies so to me i don't blame the smurfs or Disney, they both came up with great ideas and they followed into eachother. Also Marina doesn't have any sisters and her dad is not the king of the sea and doesn't have a giant a## pitch fork. Marina doesn't star with an A etheir, so don't worry about that kimbery kitty chick. she is just comparing. at least no smurf got sued so yup.

Well, in the time when "The Lion King" was launched in Brazilian movie theaters (1994) I read a subject that dealt with the similarity between Disney picture and Tezuka's "Kimba", and Disney executives explained the Japanese cartoon had really inspired the releasers, but not went as far as to do totally alike. For example, King Mufasa had his death provoked by Scar his brother, whereas Kimba's father was killed by hunters.
Yet between Ariel and Marina, I see many differences. As you told above, Mariana, Ariel was a (somewhat free, as usual) Disney version of Andersen's "Little Mermaid", yet Marina met Handy Smurf on her way to find help for her father. And she didn't need any Sea Witch's spell to stay by his side. The main obstacles before them were the elements where each one lived, water and earth. And you also reminded well, Greenday, about Marina having no sisters. I really don't think Disney have taken out something from this Smurf episode.

Good points Squeaky!! It seems there is a nuff unique stuff between the two stories for them to be different!! or at least the case is made that Disney didn't copy... this time!

Well, yeah now that you've mentioned this, Squeaky and Greenday, just two minor similarities ain't enough to accuse Disney of anything considering the overall story lines, they're totally different.

So, given those details, it should be fair to say what Disney used was probably just common to most mermaid stories after all.

Disney's Atlantis was also copied from the anime Nadia.

It's all pure coincidence to me. As cited Disney adapts the fairytale stories they produce.

I would imagine when Peyo had The Smurfs in mind he was thinking about The Seven Dwarves.

And you're right about the Seven Dwarves, Swarlock. Some sources confirm they really influenced Peyo to create the Smurfs chiefly because of any kind of mood among them - Lazy and Grouchy are the most similar examples, in my opinion. [Sleeping Smurf] [Frown]

On the subject of Little Mermaid similarities, there was an anime adaptation of the story that was released in 1975, where the mermaid was also called Marina. So, did the Smurfs borrow from this version? I personally don't think so, but I thought it might be worth noting. I don't think the anime is a particularly well known version of the story, so maybe it was just pure coincidence that both characters ended up having the same name.

Swarlock and Squeaky I never thought about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs before!! It's so similar!

Snow White = Smurfette
Dopey = Clumsy Smurf
Grumpy = Grouchy Smurf
Doc = Papa Smurf
Sleepy = Lazy Smurf

etc. etc. What do you think?

Come to think of it, while I was away on vacation, I was reading some books about copyright and the history of it. What I found most interesting was that the books all indicate what one of my professors lectured my class on: "All art comes from other art" and the constant use of the "Public Domain" has always been among writers. Also, according to the history of copyright, the law was always intended to protect creative works while allowing others to build upon them while still paying respect to the original creator. So basically, both Peyo and Disney (as well as many other authors) borrowed something from somewhere and every writer will always be influenced by pre-existing works. I apologize if my copyright, fair use and public domain research is a bit fuzzy. [Confused] [Eek!]
