One criticism: Grouchy's "me, I don't like..." may sound faithful to the original non-English comics, but it also makes him sound like a robot in this cartoon show.

1980s cartoon Grouchy expressed it much better, without sounding like a robot.

I feel like they should have had more of a difference between Clumsy and Scaredy's voices. When I first saw the Nickelodeon YouTube clip of "The Scariest Smurf" I actually thought it was Clumsy.

It's because they are dubbed by the same person.
Honestly, if somebody asked what I dislike the most about this series, I'd say - that Clumsy and Scaredy are dubbed by a woman.
Most episodes I watch in English, but watched few in Polish too and IMO our cast voice is better - at least all males are dubbed by males (few voices are even the same as in "The Lost Village"). Also, Grouchy still says the same "I hate", so in our local version, he doesn't sound like a robot (it was a good comparison). I just don't like that they changed Baby's name - it's something like to change the English name from "Baby Smurf" to "Smurfling" (yes, they did it in Polish dub). There's also been another name translation fail with Weakling - they used the same name as Timid in the 80' cartoon but it was just a one shot character.

Normally Clumsy is one of my favorite smurfs, but somehow in this version, I prefer Dimwitty... so I think he became my new favorite smurf [Big Grin]

actually yeah. grouchy does sound robotic. he sounds simular to robot nanny and grouchy is its offspring. yeah jokey i understand since he was voiced by a woman in the legendary 1980s tv series, but clumsy should of sounded simular to dimwitty and maybe with a simular speech pattern like his 80's self. I am used to scaredy being voiced by a actress by now myself but that's just me.

Jokey and Wimpy are also voiced by the same person in the 2021 series. They are also voiced by a woman. But they don't sound exactly the same.

The Smurfs (2021) review

By GrishamAnimation1

Apr 27, 2022

This new version of The Smurfs is slightly better than the 1980s cartoon series, but only in animation quality. Chef and Greedy are separate characters once again, along with Clumsy and Dimwitty. Baby Smurf and Wild Smurf make surprise returns to the series, which is true since they had not been seen since the 1980s. Brainy Smurf is no longer as self centered and arrogant as you'd expect, and his ego has been downplayed (reverting to a bookworm Smurf). While Hanna-Barbera was instrumental in extreme character build-up and taking artistic liberties in their version, this series is more accurate to the original comics.

The only downside is the use of gross-out jokes, which never happened in the 1980s series. The biggest offender is "Who Nose?", where Hefty squirts booger substance at the other Smurfs in the end. Another downside is the show focusing more on the Smurfs, Gargamel and Bigmouth, which can get pretty boring to watch. For some reason, characters such as The Smurflings, Grandpa Smurf, Nanny Smurf and Smoogle are absent. The Smurfy Grove inhabitants, on the other hand, make a fine addition to the series for a younger generation. Johan and Peewit don't appear in this series, which is quite sad because they were the ones involved in the Smurfs' introduction in the "Magic Flute" story.

Whereas the original 1980s series is aimed more directly towards families, the reboot is aimed more towards younger kids. The main reason is they wanted to focus more on the slapstick, even more so than the 1980s series did. Another reason is they wanted to tone down on the sentiment and morality that the 80s cartoon had already established, as well as reverting Papa Smurf back to how he is portrayed in the early comics. Most fans of the 1980s series can agree the Clumsy and Dimwitty friendship doesn't have the same spark as the Brainy and Clumsy friendship, due to the fact that both have more similarities in personality than differences. To be honest, I kind of like the Vanity and Jokey friendship in this, since both hardly ever interact in the 80s series.

The animation is great, the pacing is faster, the story concepts are good stuff, but the character portrayals and voice acting is pretty mixed. Aside from that, the people in Belgium did a good job keeping the spirit of the original comics alive and The Smurfs were able to regain their original mischievous personalities they had once lost. It is not a continuation of the 1980s series, but an offshoot of the original comics. Overall, I give this new series a smurfy 6 out of 10.

A review of the new Smurfs series, produced by Dupuis Audiovisual and Dreamwall. I find this cartoon more entertaining than the 1980s series, although it does have its flaws (mild use of gross out jokes).

UPDATE (11/26/2023): After watching the second season, I soon realized that Johan and Peewit didn't make a return to the series and that the show is focusing more on Smurfs, Gargamel and Bigmouth.

UPDATE (12/30/2023): Added more information on the differences in demographic, as well as the differences in friendships regarding the reboot.

Good morning folx. Just checking up on replies in chat.

Just read your review, Matt, and I agree for the most part. I think the new Nick series is unexpectedly good. But it doesn’t pull my heartstrings the way the 1980’s series has so far (I’m in the process of watching it for the first time. I’m only up to the latter part of Season 3!)

That said I think the voice acting for both series is imperfect, personally, and that’s only because the same limited cast did everything in the 80’s toon (and it shows, some vcs are too similar in some places), whereas in the modern toon some of the voices are a little annoying. But at least they didn’t use voice changers like they (seemingly) did in the 80’s toon. We’ll call that a wash, eh?

Speaking of differences, I’m a lil unclear on smn in the Nick series. Anybody know if Garg still eats / would eat Smurfs? Because the ep where he was kind-controlled by Azrael he seemed to imply he didn’t do that anymore, when he warned the Smurfs of Azrael’s intentions to eat them and called it ‘barbaric’. 🤔

In "Clumsy Not Clumsy" and "Forget Me Not", Gargamel did try to eat the Smurfs.

'The Smurfs' Season 2 To Introduce Two New Characters

Tuesday, May 31, 2022

The Smurfs are set to return in season two, coming soon to Nickelodeon, and IMPS has just revealed that two new characters will be joining the adventure!

 -

Wild Smurf lives outside the village, in the heart of the forest, whilst Leaf is a fairy destined to replace Mother Nature who is younger than we might expect, and a little bit flighty.

IMPS also unveiled new key art for season two, featuring the new characters, backgrounds and props of season two!

Nickelodeon, LAFIG Belgium and IMPS announced a second season (26 episodes) pickup of the original CG-animated The Smurfs television series earlier this year. The all-new season will continue to follow the Smurfs on a variety of adventures, including time traveling, inventing a magic camera, accidental body swapping, and more. No release date was shared.

Nickelodeon Animation and Paramount Pictures also announced at the same time that they have formed a deal with LAFIG Belgium and IMPS to produce multiple feature films based on The Smurfs, the iconic characters and stories created by Belgian artist Pierre Culliford, also known as Peyo. The first project under the new partnership is an animated musical feature film set to begin production in 2022 with a planned release on December 20, 2024.

Last year we were surprised by the return of Baby Smurf and later the Monkey was incorporated into the animated series during the first season and this year we will see the return of Wild Smurf and we will see the debut of Leaf in the second season.

Is Leaf the niece of Mother Nature or a replacement for the 2021 series? I take it Wild Smurf is returning to the series, but who is Leaf?
