I was watching an old Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movie and sketched this afterwards: 
Sherlock Smurf is blowing into a bubble pipe because I just couldn't picture a Smurf smoking a real pipe.

If you've read up on the Sherlock Holmes from actual literature, you'd see he hits up on other kinds of drugs. The modern-day interpretation of the character has him using nicotine patches to get his fix. So yeah, I can see the need for making a Smurf-type Sherlock Holmes character more "kid-friendly" as far as his use of the pipe.

My intent wasn't to sanitize Holmes for a modern audience, but not to tarnish the "innocent" image I have in my head of the Smurfs; although to be fair, Peyo's stories, Hanna-Barbera's cartoons and especially the new movies all have indications that the Smurfs aren't just innocent child-like creatures...they fall prey to many very human vices and have much the same failings as we do. Also, a bubble pipe is funnier than a real one for someone as serious as Sherlock Holmes (or Sherlock Smurf in this case).

For "innocent" characters, they sure can get away with things like drunkenness (mostly in the European-published comics) and acting like everybody's on drugs (the two cartoon show episodes "Forget Me Smurfs" and "Reckless Smurfs" are prime examples of this, possibly also "The Last Laugh").
