@ thatonesmurfx - yeah, they really all are sisters. No doubt about that. Same crummy birth father but very smurfy adopted father.
In Hawaii and other world cultures, elders are often called aunties and uncles as signs of respect and affection. This is common in parts of Africa and Asia. The last few times I vacationed in Honolulu the children of new friends I made there referred to me as "Uncle" or "Uncle Rich". A quick Google or Wikipedia search on "hanai" or Hawaiian hanai families will explain it further. That wonderful experience was what went into that cartoon.
I just finished the basic storyline for "Sassette's Aunt", which tells how Vexy became Sassette's adopted aunty. Grandpa Smurf tells the younger Smurfs that in his travels around the world, he has always liked the common practice of extended family and adopted aunts, uncles and cousins in many human cultures. Sassette likes the aunty idea and runs with it, vexing poor Vexy to the point of irritation.
How irritated? Well, I give Vexy the "super smurfy power" of shaking the earth and leveling things to the ground with a loud sonic yell (kinda like a screaming toddler), a side effect of the rather potent smurfy potion she and Hackus gulped not too long ago. Sassette's aunty bit almost causes Vexy to level the village to rubble. More to come...
I'm just thankful nobody's ranting about my changing Vexy's hair color... yet. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

I like the way you think, Richrod, combining my favorite cartoon universe with a Hawaiian setting (almost) and my, Vexy's gonna have a fit and would the change in Vexy's hair colour be to avoid copyright?

Avoiding copyright is not the issue, otherwise the other girls' hair color would change as well.
If you notice, next to my signature I always give credit to (Studio) Peyo to ownership of the Smurf characters. Bottom line, even if it's fan art, the can rightfully claim ownership to my drawings if they so choose. I have no problem with it since I am a professional cartoonist with my own galaxy of original characters.
However, fan art is everywhere on the web, Smurf and others, and the studio owners often look the other way because it's actually good free publicity for them. As long as I don't try to sell the stories, it should be okay.
As for why I changed Vexy's hair color, again I claim artistic license. Translation: because I wanted to. My thinking is that since Smurfette underwent quite a transformation when she joined the Smurf family, her new sister's blue makeover shouldn't be any different. Obviously Sony Pictures didn't think that way, but oh well.
I haven't seen the recent Smurf movie or "Smurfy Hollow", so I guess my take on Vex's personality may not be as edgy or irritable as she really is. I'm just thankful for a place online to showcase my cartoon art.

Thanks for the kudos, Sassette! I am now working on the line art for a fan comic (probably 4 pages) about how Vexy became to be called your aunty. I believe it's a really sweet story in the spirit of the Hanna-Barbera series.
Say hi to your friend Julie Dees for me. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

As our friend Sassette would say, "Smurfadoodle!" Here's an ohana (family) portrait of classic Smurfs and some of their newer siblings from the movies:

This was based primarily on the Hanna-Barbera style sheets found on this site. My preferred method of drawing is with ink, scanned into my computer and colored with Adobe Photoshop.
My first fan comic story, "Sassette's Aunt", is halfway done. It's a non-canonical but still sweet story of how and why Sassette comes to adopt Vexy as her very own "smurfy aunty". Hint: they have a lot in common, short temper among them.
My fan art and stories will be drawn (pardon the pun) from the Hanna-Barbera version of the Smurfs, with the newer Smurfs grafted in. The stories will be kept deliberately simple so little kids can follow along with their parents.
One comic strip I'm working on has Announcer Smurf calling a soccer game, getting so excited and emotional on the action that he suddenly begins screaming in Spanish like Telemundo announcer Andres Cantor and yelling "GOOOOOOOOOAL!" like him as well, causing the Smurf teams to stop in midfield and ask what the smurf is he saying. More to come... ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Thanks for your feedback. Given that "Smurfs 2" came and went so quickly at the box office and is considered as big a box office disaster as Disney's "The Lone Ranger" based on its returns, maybe Sony oughta be knocking on my door for better ideas, yes? ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

From an artistic standpoint, I don't like the idea of switching animation styles between movies and calling the next movie with a different style a "sequel". A less discerning fan wouldn't care if the Smurf movies used a different style with each movie, but it just lacks an artistic consistency and makes the overall product look like it was a tacked-on marketing ploy just to get people to watch the movie if it promises to be a "sequel" in everything but animation style.

*Sony sees that Smurfs 2 is a Disaster and eventually sees Richrod's artwork and then they say "dude, we need this guy for new ideas, PRONTO!!!!" I agree, Sony should send a guy to your house, Richrod

Vic, although I agree with you, Sony's been kinda a drag with the new smurfs movie and it needed a new storyline and the Animation will be the same for the next smurfs movie as well..

All I'm saying is that, if Sony Pictures Animation wants to do another Smurfs movie in a totally different style, DON'T CALL IT THE SMURFS 3!!! Fans of the previous movies are going to see it as an obvious tacked-on marketing ploy.

More new fan art... Smurfette in her familiar trademark like-whatcha-see pose.

(And I just realized I forgot to close in the lines of her hat. Close enough, though.)
This is from a "fan's-eye view" style sheet of the most beloved Smurf of all that I just inked and will be uploading soon. Enjoy.

Not to be left out, here is Smurfette's best friend Vexy rocking out for all her fans:

She may be a tomboy and a live wire, but her Smurf essence (I prefer the old-school term "smurfiness") is affirmed with the cutesy heart popping out of her personality, blue body and all the Smurfs in the village loving their new tough but likable kid sister.
Grandpa Smurf says that Vexy's like cinnamon: she's spicy, with a bit of a kick, full of energy, and yet sweet all over from the inside out. Love wise ol' Grampy. <3

@thatonesmurfx: Thanks for your kind comment on my Smurfette pic. She wants me to tell you she's tickled smurf that you like what you see.
Vexy's rockstar pose is based on a poster for Disney's 2003 remake of "Freaky Friday" (starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan), with LinLo's rocker-chick character trapped in Jamie Lee's body. Which reminds me of another fanfic idea... "Freaky Smurfy", in which Smurfette and Vexy switch bodies after inadvertently inhaling a berry-changing powder Papa Smurf concocts to make up for a horrible raspberry crop by magically changing extra smurfberries into razzies (they are both closely related, just like our poor switched smurfettes).
When I first saw Vex in the promos for "Smurfs 2", I thought Christina Ricci was a horrible choice to voice her. When I see her rockstar-gothic looks, I immediately think of Gwen Stefani, not Miss Ricci. Gwen's high-pitched singing voice, as heard in "Just a Girl", "It's My Life" or an early No Doubt song called "Trapped in a Box", is smurfect for such a mischief maker. And since Gwen's family works in animation (and I worked for her father Dennis at a market research firm circa 2001), such speculation may not be too far off from reality.

Oh.. I forgot about the Vexy Rocker.. (one of the moderators needs to put a Hackus and Vexy logo for these Graemlins) and I loved the Movie Freaky Friday... So funny, Just imagine this: Brainy & Hefty switch bodies and Brainy (as Hefty) finally gets his revenge and kidnaps and tortures Hefty (as Brainy), making hefty realize that his toss-out move on brainy really did go to far... Too bad I'm not a good drawer or a good story writer for that part.. ![[Roll Eyes]](rolleyes.gif)

Aloha everyone... on my personal website, Newport Muse, I have just set up a page dedicated to my Smurf fan art and stories to share with a wider audience. The wildly enthusiastic response I've been getting to my cartoons on Facebook, at work, at church and with my family suggest it's ready for a dedicated page. It's at this direct URL:
www.newportmuse.co.nf/smurfs.html
It will be the foundation of a new section called Cartoons and Fan Art, which will also feature my original characters outside the Smurfs.
I invite everysmurf to smurf on over.

@thatonesmurfx: Thanks for the idea and feedback on what could be "Freaky Smurfy". My idea is that while Papa is working on an antidote (it takes a couple of days for it to be ready), the body-switched Smurfette and Vexy learn to accept their situation, which is only temporary, and have a lot of fun with it. They get a kick out of seeing Smurfette in Vex's body sipping tea very ladylike with one pinky extended, and Vexy in Smurfette's body getting her frilly white dress down and dirty and shoveling her food into her mouth like a hog. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Smurf's honor (with right hand raised), I will never, ever smurf in that direction with my fan art. As a cartoonist, I want to create works that I can show to my little nieces and nephews and not be ashamed of the content. Nuff smurfed.

@ thatonesmurfx: Your reply just gave me another story idea, for a one-page gag. Smurfette is watching Baby in Papa's lab, is looking for him, and is shocked to find him playing in a mud puddle behind the hut. After the initial shock, she relaxes, kicks off her shoes, and joins the little smurfling in making mud pies and pretending to eat them. Brainy laments "I never thought I'd smurf the day Smurfette would smurf through the mud." Vexy comes back with "But Brainy! Every lady is entitled to a mud bath now and then, yeah?"
