The Moscow 1980 Summer Olympic Games were the first ever games to be held in a communist country.
The Super Smurf figures released in celebration of the 1980 Olympics have two notable versions.
40503 Box with Olympic name and Rings
The first box release features the Olympic name and rings logo, which are trademarks of International Olympic Committee (IOC). IOC decides who can use their trademarks and usually requires a licensing fee.
Smurf Olympic boxes made it out of the factory with the name and logo untouched. However, this first release of boxes was modified (with magic marker) to cover IOC trademarks. You may have seen these boxes in the wild covered with marker and wondered why - now you know.
 40504 Fencer Smurf Schtroumpfiade Box
The second box release features flowers in place of the trademark Olympic rings. The word "Olympia" is removed and replaced with "Schtroumpfiade" (or a similar derivation in another language). The word Schtroumpfiade may still be infringing as it could be considered derivative of the Olympic trademark.
Later versions of these boxes very sensibly dropped all implied connection to the Olympics.
The Smurfs finally got their own authorized officially licensed Olympic boxes (complete with rings logo) celebrating the 2012 Belgian Olympic team. It just took over thirty years.

An addendum: It should be noted that there are authorized Olympic Smurfs prior to the 2012 Smurfs Belgian Olympic team figures.
Dixie were official Olympic sponsors of Team USA in 1984. Their Smurf cups and posters featured in this thread were therefore fully-licensed "Olympic Smurfs".

The Smurfs on Podium by Plastoy (Collectoys)
The Plastoy version of The Smurfs on the Podium is very similar to the Like An Angel version shown above. However the Plastoy version features each individual Smurf with a different expression. The Like an Angel Smurfs all share the same facial expression - a happy smile!
Here we see the first place winner Smurf is happy with a big smile. The second place winner is looking at the 1st place winner with envy or regret that he didn't win first place. The third place winner blows out a sigh of relief for making it to the podium.

I have two questions regarding the topic, please:
1. Regarding the 1980 Olympic Super Smurfs, did Schleich and the Smurf brand specifically have the licence to put the Olympic Rings (and terminology) on their boxes back then? I’m wondering because they quickly revised their packaging soon after the initial releases to take all of that stuff off. So, did Schleich do this without permission, and once the Olympic committee found out, they had to correct? The Smurfs DID have permission at some point in the 80’s to use the logo, etc, as evidence of Dixi posters, and stickers shown in this thread…. but maybe it was only Dixi that had permission and that’s the only reason why the Smurfs got shown?
2. Regarding the 80’s Super Smurf boxes, were the Olympic Rings scribbled black by hand, using marker, by either the Schleich factory workers, or even the Retailers being forced to do it? Or, were the new boxes printed with that black scribble? All the black scribbles are slightly different, so that’s why I’m thinking it was done by hand.
Thanks!

One can surmise that Schleich did not obtain a license from IOC because of their actions.
Olympic Smurf boxes first had their markings removed with marker and then were redesigned to obscure the rings trademark with flowers. Eventually completely new boxes were made that did not reference the Olympics trademarks in any way. The fact that Scheich engaged in such drastic behavior leans towards the idea of not obtaining an IOC license.
Dixie on the other hand was licensed directly by the United States Olympic Committee. Dixie prominently featured a USOC seal saying "Official Sponsor". At the time, Schleich had no similar IOC brandings or statements.
Something compelled Schleich to remove the Olympic name and rings trademarks from the Smurf packaging. If retailers were asked to block out the rings logo, there may be a memorandum from Schleich or the retailers themselves instructing employees on what to do.
Conjecture posits that the need to change the boxes was immediate. Otherwise, why would they so hastily and haphazardly use marker to messily deface the offending trademark and package? Every defaced box I have seen has ostensibly unique hand-written marker scribbling different from the next.
