Hey Smurfs, we all know that Smurfs are a very big part of our lives. But have you ever stopped and wondered if/how the Smurfs can change your life? I'm sure not too many...We generally just see them as something we really enjoy. I never really thought of this either, I just saw Smurfs as funny, cute little blue characters that I really liked. I never thought that my little Smurf figurines would help me more than just bringing me joy... Growing up, I had, and still have had to deal with the troubles of having Autism, Seizures, different diagnosis, etc. Because of different issues, I have never got the "necessary help" my mum was trying to find. Until just a few years ago, she knew nothing about it and just thought that I was just "troubled." I would have these "episodes" as my mum would call it, which made it very hard for me to do anything. A few weeks ago, my brother had to stay at the hospital for a while because he got into an accident. From then everything changed. Everything. I was so used to the same things everyday, and then it all went away. My brother was gone, my mum was gone, and when school started, I couldn't see him. From then, my issue started getting worse, I would just have more and more seizures and panic attacks. Because I'm still on the long four-year-long waiting list, I had nothing to help me. But then that all changed when my mum got the best idea ever. I was having one one day, and then she quickly grabbed a smurf, a stuffed smurf, and my smurf hat, and gave them to me. She then started talking to me about the Smurfs and sat me down to watch the Smurfs. She didn't expect it to work, but it actually calmed me down a lot faster than usual. They made me happy again! I have always liked the Smurfs, but now...I don't know how to explain it...Their kind of a life savor. Now, my mum wants me to keep a Smurf on me wherever I go somewhere, in the car, and just scattered throughout the house. So no matter where I go, I can be happy!
The Smurfs were a big life changer for me This may sound crazy, but I don't know what I would do without them...

I usually post non-Smurf topics here since - you know - this is the off-topic forum. But... if it weren't for Smurfs, I wouldn't have tested my detective skills. For example, here: http://bluebuddies.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php/topic/1/2477.html#000022
If I remember correcting on one of the birthday posts, it is said that Smurfette was born on the 15th of December and this was posted on the 16th of December, 2011. Seeing that Smurfette is 12 when she posted this - as stated in the post itself - we takeaway 12 from 2011 and get 1999 which is the same year I was born! Which means me and Smurfette are roughly the same age as we share the same birth year. I had a crush on her every since.

Nice story Redneck Smurfette, it's nice reading about how the Smurfs helped you.
Me, I tend to worry quite a bit. Recently, I find myself singing the La La song to myself and it actually cheers me up. I'll sometimes sing it while I'm in a good mood, it helps distracts me from something that worries me.
I don't just sing the song with just the Las, I actually sing the other lines to. Like "sing a happy song" and "smurf your whole day long," well, except the "Ooh, I hate the Smurfs" line. Mainly because I don't hate them.
Before watching Smurfs on DVD, I had a lot of worries on my mind. Losing my home with mom (FYI, we both live in an apartment now, so we're good), people who picked on me, that sort of thing. So watching Smurfs: The Lost Village and the cartoon, and thinking about it and singing the theme song just made me feel better. It distracts me from thinking about something bad that's on my mind.
Plush toys also comfort me, that includes several My Little Pony and Disney plush, but it now includes Smurfette, Papa, Hefty, Smurflily, even a Vexy plush, even if she is from the live action movie.
For me, they help me relax when I worry. Even if worrying might not be something major.

Those are all sweet stories and for me, The Smurfs became more of a comfort for me as well, I too have Autism and since watching the cartoons and reading the comics starting from 13 years old, I have learned their lessons and seen how they live life so happily because they also teach us to be good people.
I can't wait for the new series to teach the new generation! ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

My Smurfette plush helped me with my autism for a bit. I too have autism, I just don't speak about it much online since I've seen some people use "autistic" as an insult.
Last Saturday was my brother's wedding, and the reception afterwards was too much for me to handle. Music was louder than a theater, constant flashing from cameras, really bad reaction that made me leave the room several times.
I also had my backpack with me as I packed my 3DS and some games to play since it was a bit of a trip. For some reason, I packed my Smurfette plush, in event I got stuck there (mom and I went via Uber, so mom couldn't drive home). While I was at the table with mom, I made Smurfette pop out of my backpack, and she help distract me for a bit.
It sounds silly, seeing Smurfette helped, even if it was for a bit. With everything going on, it really wasn't pleasant for me. Also, I find plushies as a form of stress relief, at least for me anyway.

Has the Smurfs changed your life?...
I have autism, too Redneck, but I don't get seizures like you do... But I did go through some trauma around the same time as I was introduced to the Smurfs...
You see, dad was not a very nice person. He would be very unkind to my mother... He was often drunk and violent... He was always picking a fight with my mom.
In March of 2013, a very bad fight happened that caused me to be taken from my family and placed with my mom's cousin.
My mom ended up in jail for a long time for protecting herself from her crazy husband, who got off free (aside from being fired from his job on the ranch, where he never really did anything and didn't get a very good paycheck.)
In my years there, I used the Smurfs as an escape from the stress and strain of the real world... They were the only thing that helped me with my problems... Because therapy just wasn't working.
My mom's cousin was a strange one... Which is the only way I can describe her...
And after three years of allowing me to escape through the magical world of the happy blue Smurfs, she forced me to give it up and had me get rid of all my Smurf stuff for good. My drawings... Everything.
But around late September/early October, I was reunited with my mother... I now come back sometimes to clear my mind and get my frustrations out.
I guess it's just who I am...

The biggest thing the Smurfs have had an impact on in my life is that without them, I may not have started to write fanfiction. Although I feel bad for dragging my mom to the first live-action Smurfs movie (she didn't like it), that movie sparked something in me, and I felt compelled to write more about these characters. I've come a long way writing-wise since those days, and I'm proud of myself. If I'd discovered the Smurfs sooner, I wouldn't have had all that time to improve and figure out what worked for me. So thank you, Smurfs, for unintentionally starting a writing passion that hopefully will never die.

It actually has made me tear up at how many other autistic people are sharing their stories here... i spent so many years of my life feeling very socially isolated by my special interest in smurfs and the comfort and escape that it has brought me. So much so that i used to do random keyword searches to see if i could find anything about a possible online community of other autistic smurf fans. So, to start, im very emotional seeing alot of these responses. They've made me very happy; like a little part of me suddenly feels complete.
Smurfs gave me a place to escape abuse, the seperation of my entire family, and even my suicidal thoughts as a young teenager. Unfortunately, i didnt get to know i was autistic until i was 16, but when i found out, suddenly my whole life made sense, as did my special interest in smurfs. I finally understood why it was one of the only things that could calm me down from a meltdown when i lacked any other coping skills, and why i was always so intently focused on / knowledgeable about it in a way that was more than just because i liked it.
I (personally) do not enjoy the live action-animation Smurf movies, and even though Lost Village isnt perfect -- it is to me. I broke down and cried like a baby the first time i watched it because of how long i had been waiting for it, how much i love Smurfs, and how deeply i relate to Smurfette as an autistic person (which is also what i headcanon her to be). During the time that i was waiting for the film to release, i was very much not okay. There were very few things that kept me alive during my time of struggle, so little that im honestly still surprised that i survived and conquered to be where i am today, and the fact that an animated Smurf movie was being released was one of them. Seeing it was like the happy ending, or the final chapter, on such a painful part of my life. I will be forever grateful for how much love was put into its creation, and how much it coincidentally catered to alot of things i had just headcanoned about smurfs from subtext (like Smurfette, Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty being a friend group!).
I was bullied very harshly for my love for Smurfs at a point in my life, and was very closed in and private about how much i loved it, but after understanding who i was and having a voice behind the reason i did things i used to think were 'abnormal' or 'weird'... my diagnosis, and Smurfs, helped me to develop into being my own individual self instead of falling in line and conforming to the image the people my age thought i should have. I shamelessly themed everything i had with Smurfs, and wore my identity as 'that girl who likes smurfs' very blatantly and unapologeitcally for the rest of my high school years. Because i realized that anyone who said anything to me about it had no real ground to stand on as to why they were doing so, other than that they were just 'being mean to be mean'. Why would i hide myself and be miserable when i could cover my binder in smurf stickers and my backpack in Smurfette pins?
Alot of this probably seems dumb, but in so many ways... Smurfs, my special interest, and just how much i love it on my own terms, really shaped the person i am today, and taught me that life is too short to live in a cage. Im a much happier person because i spent so much of my growing up being immersed in it's amazing little universe, and have been collecting since i was 11. <3
