France Bleu: How do you approach drawing the Smurfs, as an honour, a certain form of pressure?
Tébo: I think it's pretty cool! I always start off a little unconsciously when I work on a project like that. I had already done a Mickey and I did a series called Captain Biceps with parodies of superheroes. So, I've always been used to drawing other characters than my own. And when I was offered to take over the Smurfs four years ago, I said to myself yeah, but I had to come up with an idea. I just had a little idea of the Smurf who didn't speak Smurf and that's it. So I kind of dropped that project and a year ago, I had a brainwave where I understood that if he didn't speak Smurf, it's because he had lost his memory and all the ideas came. And I found lots of gags. After that I had to be legitimate. I thought about my youth, I asked myself: was I a huge fan of the Smurfs, enough of a fan to make an album in my own way? I thought back to the cartoons and especially the Smurf figurines. I still have mine of the Grumpy Smurf and suddenly I was ready to make the Smurfs album!
This comic is a way to revisit the Smurfs a little. What are the Smurfs and what is there of you finally?
First, there are all the Smurfs because I absolutely wanted to make a real Smurf story. I'm not going to make a parody or make a tribute album to Peyo. They lend me the characters and I play with them, but it remains my humor, my way of telling stories and staging. But in my very cartoon style, I also wanted to keep the cute side of the Smurfs that I remembered as a child. The biggest part of the work was that people recognize Peyo's Smurfs but also my graphic style.
You have to respect the universe while putting your own stamp on it, finding a balance. You were given the freedom to invent new Smurfs?
Yes, I had carte blanche, I didn't have any specifications or anything. The publishers and rights holders were really nice to me. I was able to invent my Smurf that I call the unknown Smurf who has amnesia. He has a big nose, he's a little different from the others. I was also able to modify the known characters like the strong Smurf that I made ultra-muscular, I changed Smurfette's hairstyle and shoes. Even the village is made of mushrooms, but they're my mushrooms. When they open the album, people will find a normal album. But if they put it next to a Peyo album, they'll see the differences.
The album comes out soon. Are you a little stressed after months of work?
A little relieved because when I started the album, I thought it was going to be easy and do everything at my fingertips! For the writing, it was simple because I found the ideas quite quickly, even if I reworked the scenario several times. But it's especially in the drawing, I fantasized about the album so much that at one point, I couldn't get to the end of my fantasies. I had to correct my drawings hundreds of times. And when you're constantly correcting, it's a little complicated in the head. It's once I colored the album, that I said to myself that's it, I have the characters in hand. I received the album not so long ago and I'm proud of myself. For 25 years, I've released one album a year and I'm always a little disappointed. I always tell myself I'm going to improve for the next one and this is the first time I'm quite happy. I had a lot of stress during work but now I'm a little more relaxed and I've had good feedback from the profession and journalists. I'm quite calm. It's still nine months of work, seven days a week with between 10 and 14 hours a day of work!

The Smurfs And The Book That Tells Everything
HOROMI was the first to let us know that The Smurfs And The Book That Tells Everything story is featured in The Smurfs Tales #2 - Smurfette In Charge. Papercutz has 12 Smurf Tales Books at this time. Each volume has multiply stories inside. The lastest volume, The Smurfs Tales #12: Smurfs And The Dragon Of The Lake will be released at the end of April. The Smurfs Tales #13 will be released in August. Haven't seen the cover art for it yet.
