A little Smurf history...
As a young man, Peyo joined Spirou magazine and found success with his story of Johan & Peewit. And it was as part of this series that he created the Smurfs!
Following the Smurfs appearance in the Spirou magazine, Peyo continued working on the adventures of Johan & Peewit and of Pussy the Cat. He also created Benoît Brisefer (later Benny Breakiron), an extraordinarily strong little boy. But eventually the worldwide success of the Smurfs consumed all his energy. And he dedicated himself fully to their epic story, in all its aspects, until his death in 1992.

Spirou Smurfs Mini-Stories Spirou Smurfs Mini-Stories (Back Side)
In the 1960s, Spirou invented the mini-story to add to its magazine! Four pages, in the center of the magazine, were dedicated to a mini story. These mini-pages told a complete story which the reader discovered after cleverly folding and stapling together the pages.
The first mini-story (The Black Smurfs) was published on July 2, 1959 in Spirou n°1107. It was an immediate success which led to regular publication until 1995. Due to its popularity, Dupuis later published these stories as separate books.
Spirou Mini Stories of the Smurfs:
- The Black Smurfs (1959) - The Smurf Thief (1959) - The Egg and the Smurfs (1960) - The Fake Smurf (1961) - The Hunger of the Smurfs (1961) - The Hundredth Smurf (1962)

This is a rare uncut copy of The Hundredth Smurf mini-story insert from Spirou Issue #1244. The reader would carefully cut the sheets from the magazine, then place them in order and add a couple of staples to create a little book (like the completed mini-stories shown above)!

Spirou's First Dedicated Smurf Adventure (Mini Story): The Black Smurfs

Spirou Mini Story - Les Sctroumpfs Noirs (The Black Smurfs)
Shortly after debuting as side-characters in the adventure of "Johan et Pirlouit" serialized in the Belgian comics magazine Spirou in 1958, the Smurfs had their own first adventure in a pocket-sized supplement (mini-récit) of Spirou no. 1107, dated July 2nd, 1959. Titled as Les Schtroumpfs noirs (The Black Smurfs), this adventure was scripted by Yvon Delporte who was Spirou's editor-in-chief at the time. Over the years, Delporte would contribute more scripts to the Smurfs.
Did you know? The Black Smurfs was the first Smurfs Adventure Mini Story and The Flying Smurf was the first adventure story (full-size) published in Spirou a few years later.

The Smurfs mini-stories / Les mini recits Schtroumpfs
Due to success of these 6 mini-stories in Spriou magazines, Dupuis later published them as independent books.
These smurftastic stories would ultimately be published in many different languages for Smurf fans around the world to enjoy. These are the stories we all know and love today!

I have a collection called "Les Schtroumpfs: L'intégrale" (The Smurfs: The Complete Collection) and it comes in four volumes with detailed documentaries covering the history of the Smurfs and their publication in Spirou. Nearly all the pictures in this thread are featured in that collection. There's even some model sheets from the Hanna-Barbera cartoon.
Spirou magazine is essentially a european version of Weekly Shonen Jump.

Smurftastic information and photos of the Les Schtroumpfs: L'intégrale books! I love that Dupuis took all of the Smurf publications from the Spirou magazines over the years and put them into a four volume series. Plus, including the detailed documentaries and all of the extra photos is very smurfy!
The "No, this is not Smurfette!" gags with famous people or landmarks with a Smurf hat is such fun! The Statue of Liberty and the Mona Lisa Painting is great. And all of Spirou characters and The Beatles too. Thanks for sharing, SomeGuy!

Those are the books I have but this collection only includes the stories drawn by Peyo himself, which I am perfectly fine with.

 Spirou #1211 - Spirou Vacances

Even though The Smurfs are not on the cover of this 1961 Spirou Issue, it is a fantastic issue for Smurf fans. Not only does this issue include The Faux Schtroumpf (The Fake Smurf) mini-story but it also includes Spirou Smurf Stamps!

SPIROU SMURF POSTAGE STAMPS
Complete Uncut Sheet of Spirou Stamps (1961) Journal de Spirou Smurf Stamps (1961)
Journal de Spirou Smurf Postage Stamps
Spirou No. 1211 (June 29, 1961) featured this full page of Spirou Postage Stamps. The stamps are perforated. It's rare to find the uncut sheet. All of smurf stamps read, "Journal de Spirou" and "Schtroumpf". Each smurf stamp has a different value.
There are 1s, 2s, 3s Smurf stamps (with different background colors), a 5s Black Smurf stamp and 10s Papa Smurf stamp. And Johan and Peewit each get their own stamp too!
 Heros de Spirou Stamps (1971)

Later in 1971, a second series of Spirou stamps featuring The Smurfs came out (Spirou no. 1737 July 29, 1971 and Spirou no. 1741 August 26, 1971). These stamps are not perforated and do not have a face value. They are unofficial postage stamps that you have to cut yourself but are still fun to collect!
