2024 McDonalds Smurfs Set - Olympic & Paralympic Smurf Figures
The 2024 McDonalds Smurfs are Olympics & Paralympics Smurfs! The 15 Sports Smurfs are only available at German & Austria McDonalds. The promotion lasts six weeks. The Smurfs are called Die Schlümpfe in Germany. These Happy Meal Toys are Smurf figures made by Schleich. Each Sporty Smurf comes in its own unique box.

"It's finally that time again. The Smurfs from Schleich will be back in Happy Meals starting July 25th. In keeping with the spirit of the 2024 sports year, each of the 15 Smurfs represents a different Olympic or Paralympic discipline.
From hockey to handball to wheelchair basketball, the new Smurfs in the Happy Meal show their sporty side. In typical Smurf style, they illustrate the values of community, sportsmanship and inclusion. From July 25 to September 4, one of 15 figures will be available as a toy in the Happy Meal in German McDonald's restaurants. Another figure is available exclusively to users of the McDonald's app. The Olympic idea of "taking part is everything" takes on a special meaning: It goes without saying that sports for people with and without disabilities are equally important. Four of the sports Smurfs in the Happy Meal have a visible disability. In this way, inclusion can also be experienced in a playful way for little guests.
Since December 2023, McDonald's Germany has been working with the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS) to draw attention to the fact that sport can be a decisive key to a more inclusive society and to greater participation in everyday life. The aim of the national cooperation is to create more visibility in para sport and to highlight the importance of inclusion in everyday life. McDonald's already generated a lot of attention for the topic with the online campaign "We the (In)Visible" at the start of the partnership. The new Smurfs are now bringing even more attention to the topic of inclusion in the 2024 sports summer. Interested guests can easily find out more on the association's website. Clubs and sports opportunities in the neighborhood can be researched on parasport.de."

This is the second time that Schleich has made Happy Meal Toys / Smurf figurines for McDonalds. Back in 2022, Schleich made 19 new Smurfs for McDonalds Germany & Austria.

It is interesting to see which Smurf character was chosen to represent the different sports.
Is Farmer Smurf playing field hockey because we normally see him tending to his field of crops growing food for all the Smurfs? I guess he would be right at home in any field! And the field hockey stick kind of reminds me of a scythe cutter tool.

Self Portrait with a Phrygian Cap

What is a Phrygian cap? The Phrygian cap is typically a soft, red, brimless cone-shaped hat associated with freedom and revolution.
Many believe the cap originates in ancient Phrygia, which is now part of modern Turkey. Some argue the cap is Iranian, tracing it to the Scythians.
How does the Phrygian cap represent freedom? When a Phrygian slave was manumitted (won his freedom) he donned a Phrygian cap - which both symbolically and literally represented release from servitude.
The Phrygian cap is similar to an ancient Roman pileus hat which was used in a ceremony granting a slave freedom.
In Brittany, France, the cap became notable during a 1675 tax revolt. The protesters were known for their "bonnets rouge", or red caps. During the French Revolution of the late 1700s, the Phrygian cap was worn by many of the revolutionaries. It is linked to both the concept of violent rebellion (the means), and eventually, liberty (the ends).
A painting commemorating the 1830 July Revolution, called "Liberty Leading the People", features Marianne, a symbol representing France, wearing the Phrygian cap. The painting also features the tricolor flag of the French Revolution.
In 1871, the revolutionary government of Paris, the Paris Commune was established using the color red. Later on this same red color was also adopted by communists overthrowing Russian tsarists.
The Phrygian cap is featured in American coins and artwork in the 1800s and is also on the seal of the US Senate. It is claimed that the Phrygian cap was worn by workers of the Eiffel Tower in 1889.
The Paris Olympics 2024 features a mascot called Phryge, based on the Phrygian cap:

Dirk Nowitzki Sports Hero
It is interesting that Dirk Nowitzki is one of the Sports Hereos in the book during the promotion of Smurfs Happy Meals toys at McDonalds because he has been associated with The Smurfs and charity work before!
Dirk Nowitzki was part of a big 2013 charity campaign with Edeka. The Dallas Mavericks basketball icon had a Smurf Statue made in his honor to be auctioned off for charity.
The German supermarket chain, Edeka, had two very popular promotions (2012 Footballer Smurfs / Soccer Smurfs & 2013 Stackable Smurfs) where you got free Smurf figures when you earned enough points buying groceries.

Do you only have the small possibility to get Hefty in Germany if you buy a Happy Meal in the App or do you always get Hefty then?
Is there no way to get him in Austria?

Smurf Happy Meal Summer 2024 (German)
"McDonald’s Germany is celebrating the summer of sport with a new Happy Meal promotion, created by tms Munich, which stars The Smurfs – and reminds kids that taking part is what counts.
The six-week promotion will see an exclusive, highly covetable Smurf figurine included with every Happy Meal sold in Germany and Austria. There are 16 sporty Smurf figurines in total, including Hefty, the exclusive Smurf only available in the McDonald’s app. Each is shown taking part in a different Olympic or Paralympic sport. There is even a breakdancing Smurf to mark the debut of breaking as an official sport at this year’s games.
tms Munich is behind the McDonald’s Happy Meal concept and strategy, as well as designing the toys and packaging, and negotiating the partnerships and licensing deal. It marks the biggest Happy Meal campaign to date to originate from the agency, which opened its Munich, Germany location in 2022. tms Munich is part of tms worldwide.
The representation of abled and disabled athletes in this promotion is also supported by the German Disabled Sports Association and the figurines have been developed in a partnership with renowned German toy brand Schleich®. The Smurfs, who are known in German as “Die Schlümpfe”, are also proud ambassadors for the United Nations’ sustainable development goals.
Accordingly, tms Munich has put sustainability at the heart of this Happy Meal campaign, from manufacturing the figurines in MBPP (mass balance polypropylen) to ensuring the designs are highly collectable and will be kept for years to come.

I have yet to actually see this mystery 16th Hefty Smurf figure. I have only read about it from the promotional documents. Neither the German McDonalds APP nor the Austria McDonalds APP currently reference this elusive figure. I am eagerly awaiting for it to be revealed!

2024 McDonald's Weightlifter Hefty Smurf (App Exclusive Smurf)
Exclusive Hefty Smurf (Back of Box)
The 16th Olympic Smurf has been revealed... it's Weightlifting Hefty Smurf! This McDonald's Smurf is available through the German McDonald's App (McDonald's Deutschland App). This is the only app exclusive Smurf. The other 15 Smurfs can be readily found at the fast food restaurants but number 16 is only via the app.

Although I have looked on the app, I still don't see the exclusive Hefty on it either. Both Austria and Germany only show the 15 Smurfs. I don't know if many others are having difficulties with the German app as well. I am not personally able to find the exclusive Hefty Smurf in the German McDonald's app... probably because I don't live in Germany!
