And yes, it's sad that the film studios prefer younger and more popular celebrities, often with no voice-acting experience at all, because of their big drawing power to the box office. A lot of people were asking "Huh?" when Katy Perry was picked to play Smurfette in the films, but she made the part her own even if it wasn't as gravelly or high-pitched as Lucile Bliss. Then again, neither is veteran voice actress Melissa Sturm.
I believe the longevity of "The Simpsons" opened the door wide open for celebrities to do these one-off voiceover roles, when it became the hip thing to be Simpsonized as a guest voice talent or part of a story arc.
I think it's made today's audiences think that career voice actors like Hank Azaria and Frank Welker, who can each take on multiple character roles and impersonate others, are anomalies rather than the norm. Having done character voices for my own YouTube cartoons and in radio, I know voice acting is a lot more than just standing in front of a microphone, record a few lines, then walk away. That's why even your average Joe or Jane is amazed at the work of Azaria, Welker, June Foray and especially the late Mel Blanc... and go "meh" or "humph" at Pee-Wee Herman or Jimmy Kimmel and their short one-off Smurf parts.

I also would have preferred a great voice actor did the voice of a particular Smurf than a celebrity, Richrod. No doubt it's to appeal to a new generation fans of this or that singer is fashionable at the moment. I agree, that's truly sad. ![[Frown]](frown.gif)

This part of an interview of hers mentions the Smurfs, describing mainly the way she created unmistakable Jokey's voice - and laugh.

Paul Reubens would have been a better Jokey if he just used his regular Pee-Wee Herman voice instead of the voice he used in the movie. But then the movies would have been better if they weren't all time-travel stories that used only five or six Smurfs throughout most of the story. Oh well...
