Here's an excerpt from my new work-in-progress EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf short story called "Little Sister Smurf Lost", which retells the origin of Sassette in Empath's universe of stories:

quote:
This is how it all began for the little girl Smurf named Sassette – as it actually had happened.

It started on the day of her birth, about 150 years before Empath’s final return from Psychelia, when most of Empath’s fellow Smurfs were born. Her father, Muscles Smurf, was the proudest Smurf that ever lived among Papa Smurf’s own fellow Smurfs, whose pride was not only in his mechanical skills, but also in his physical skills and the fact that he was born a male Smurf. Muscles enjoyed engaging in physical activities such as all kinds of sports with his fellow Smurfs, and he also enjoyed getting all greasy and dirty fiddling around with mechanical things that broke down in the village and needed fixing. Muscles enjoyed showing off not only his muscles, but also the various tattoos that he had accumulated over the years since he never felt any shame in adorning his body with various symbols that showed what he was proud of being.

Muscles also enjoyed being the first Smurf among his generation to father a child – or rather, two children, since his wife Paprika Smurfette gave birth to twins, both of them sons. The first child that came forth was Hefty, who would share his father’s love for physical activity and being born a male Smurf. His brother Handy, who was born minutes after Hefty, would share his father’s love for working with tools and mechanical things. Muscles gave lots of attention to both his sons, feeling proud that he had proven his maleness by fathering sons that carried on the things that he loved doing.

The next child Muscles fathered was Grouchy, who shared neither of these traits that Hefty or Handy had possessed. If anything, he shared the only trait his father had that wasn’t very endearing to his fellow Smurfs – namely, his stubbornness and his rather gruff attitude towards everything. In fact, Grouchy was more stubborn than his father ever was, and refused to play with any of his own fellow Smurfs when they were put together to play with each other.

Then sometime after Empath was born and was taken to Psychelia, where he would remain for the next 50 years, Muscles had fathered another child. He along with his fellow Smurfs were basically expecting that this would be his fourth son, since sons seemed to be the only thing he – or any of his fellow male Smurfs at the time – were able to father. The excitement over this possibility was flowing through Muscles’ veins, as if every fiber of his being wanted this to happen.

And then came the time his fourth child would be born. Muscles waited outside his house along with most of his fellow Smurfs, pacing around nervously, hoping things will be all right, while Healer Smurf was with Paprika helping with the delivery. After what seemed like hours, they heard the sound of a newborn baby Smurf crying, as another new life among the next generation of Smurfs came into the world. And then Healer came out, smiling and shaking Muscles’ hand. “You’re a very lucky Smurf,” he announced. “Your wife just smurfed you a daughter Smurf.”

Muscles felt so taken aback by the news, he instantly withdrew his hand from Healer’s. As much as he now became the first Smurf in his generation to father a girl Smurf amidst dozens of boy Smurfs, he personally felt betrayed, as if nature had conspired with fate to give him something that he never wanted to have.

Nevertheless, Muscles went into his house, where he saw his wife Paprika sitting up in bed with their newborn daughter, who was wrapped up in a blanket and wearing a Smurf hat. Interestingly, the infant girl Smurf seemed rather feisty and full of energy, as if she was ready to play with her fellow Smurfs rather than be cooped up in a playpen resting.

“Isn’t she so adorable?” Paprika mentioned to her husband as they both looked on at the face of this infant girl Smurf. “She’s got your eyes, your smile, your hair color, and these cute little freckles on her face. Yet I can’t smurf her to stop squirming around in my arms. She likes to keep smurfing my nose and smurfing with my face. I truly wonder where she smurfs this from.”

Just then, Muscles’ daughter also grabbed her father by the nose, smiling as she was enjoying playing with his face, as he leaned in closer to get a better look at her.

“Yeah, she’s Papa’s little girl, all right,” Muscles finally said, realizing this for himself. Despite his being denied yet another son in favor of a daughter, he couldn’t help feeling somewhat proud of this child.

Soon after, Muscles’ other fellow Smurfs except for Culliford, who at the time was mourning the loss of his son Empathy, celebrated the birth of his daughter with him. They were also taken by how cute she looked and by how feisty she was as they each held her in their own arms. As much as they were hoping that some Smurf among their own generation would eventually father a girl, they were never expecting one that was just so full of energy like her fellow brother Smurfs. The other mother Smurfs made dresses for her in the hope that she would wear them, to show how pretty she would look in them. But whenever Paprika tried to get her daughter to wear them, she would cry and fuss, even going so far as to strip herself of those clothes. She preferred wearing only the baby clothes that her brother Smurfs wore, and so the mother Smurfs caved in and made such clothes in pink for her to wear.

When it came to playing with her fellow infant male Smurfs, Muscles’ daughter proved herself to be rather aggressive. She often liked to grab the other Smurfs’ toys right out of their hands, and fling mud and baby food right into their faces, enjoying the sight of them crying whenever she did those things. Of course, some of her fellow baby Smurfs like Hefty and Tuffy were just as aggressive in their playtime as she was, and oftentimes she would be found wrestling with either of them, neither of them ever breaking down to cry whenever one got the best of the other. Paprika tried her best to discourage her infant daughter from acting and playing so rough, but Muscles didn’t seem to mind her behaviors one bit, even if he did have to intercede every now and then.

“You’re Papa’s little bundle of sassafras, aren’t you?” he said as he playfully jostled his daughter around one time that he had her on his lap, enjoying the sight of her not getting enough of his style of playing with her. “Maybe that’s what we should smurf you…my sweet little Sassafras!”

And so, in the village register, Muscles’ daughter was known as Sassafras Smurfette. However, most of the Smurfs in the village at that time preferred to call her by a shorter name, which was Sassette, or just by the nickname Sassy. That was how it was for the next 46 years.

A sample write from the story that appeared on another thread for smurfberries.

quote:
Meanwhile, Empath was in Greedy’s kitchen, trying out something new that Greedy had invented with the help of Handy’s new cereal-making machine. Greedy handed Empath a bowl full of round pink and blue nuggets, which made Empath curious as to what this is supposed to be.
“What exactly is this kind of cereal, Greedy?” Empath asked.
“It’s a cereal that’s supposed to not only look like little smurfberries, but also taste like them,” Greedy answered. “That’s because these were smurfed with the flavor of actual smurfberries in them. Try one and smurf how they taste.”
Empath decided to do just that. He took a single nugget of cereal out of the bowl and put it in his mouth. His eyes grew wide as he noticed the taste of the nugget. “It’s rather sweet, but it does taste like a smurfberry…only a bit crunchy,” he commented.
“Here, Empath, smurf this with a bit of milk,” Greedy suggested, pouring a bit of milk into the cereal bowl and handing Empath a spoon.
Empath scooped up a spoon full of the nuggets with some milk and put it into his mouth. He now noticed that the sweetness of the cereal had increased with the milk added to it, but the nuggets still stayed crunchy. He couldn’t help but take another spoonful of the cereal. Greedy watched with delight as Empath ate several more spoonfuls, enjoying every single taste.
“This cereal is truly delicious, Greedy,” Empath remarked, finishing his seventh spoonful. “What exactly do you call this kind of cereal, anyway?”
“Gee, I was just wondering about that mysmurf,” Greedy pondered. “I was thinking of smurfing with something like Smurfberry Crispies or Smurfberry Crunchies. What do you think about either of those names?”
Empath thought about that for a moment. “This smurf would have to go with Smurfberry Crunchies, simply because of how it tastes. Do you have anymore of this kind of cereal in your kitchen?”
“Just a single jar full of it, Empath,” Greedy answered. “But if it’s really that good, then I would smurftainly want to smurf more of this so that every Smurf in the village gets to smurf this new kind of cereal. It would smurfly be a break from having to smurf those bland kind of cereals like the corn flakes and the toasted O’s. Painter and Printer said that they would smurf the boxes for this cereal, so now that I have the name to smurf with the cereal, I can have them smurf its name right on the box. Just think of it – ‘Greedy’s Smurfberry Crunchies: a super smurfy breakfast cereal.’”
Empath laughed at that. “Greedy, you sound like somebody doing one of those advertisements on a window-vision program. It’s too bad those window-visions don’t function anymore, or else you could have had a format through which you could have showed the whole village the greatness of your new cereal invention.”
“Yeah, well, I do miss those things as well,” Greedy said, laughing with Empath at the thought. “But can you imagine the kind of adsmurftisment that would smurf with this product? I’m already smurfing of having Smurfette, Painter, Brainy, Vanity, Grouchy, Clumsy, and even Papa Smurf be part of the window-vision ad, and we can have the Village Smurphony Orchestra do the music for it. I bet even the Smurflings can’t resist waking up in the mornings to smurf this on their breakfast table, with or without the ad.”
“This smurf only hopes that this cereal won’t give them more energy than they already have to get them through the day,” Empath humored as he devoured another spoonful of the cereal. It was then that Empath noticed a piece of paper sailing into the kitchen through an open window, landing on the floor in front of them.
“Now where do you suppose that smurfed from?” Greedy wondered.
Empath picked up the piece of paper and noticed that it had crayon markings on it. “It looks like it’s one of Sassette’s drawings, Greedy,” Empath answered as he examined the style of the artwork. “It’s the crude form of a female figure, all colored in purple, with a rather hideous face and sparkly stars coming from her hands, possibly indicating that she is a sorceress or something. And there’s a name above the picture: AVENGELICA.” Empath suddenly flinched as he continued to examine the picture. “This smurf senses that Sassette must have had a disturbing nightmare that she couldn’t tell anybody else about, so she had to put what she saw in this nightmare on this paper.”
“Poor Sassette,” Greedy sighed heavily. “No wonder she’s been besmurfing so strangely all of a sudden, Empath, as if she truly hates our guts for us being male Smurfs and all. I thought my making sure she smurfs everything on her plate before she smurfs her dessert might be the cause of her smurfing that way even towards me.”
“There’s something going on with Sassette beyond her recent behaviors that this smurf needs to talk to Papa Smurf about, and what’s on this piece of paper looks like a clue as to what’s happening,” Empath reasoned. He handed the bowl of cereal to Greedy as he headed out of the kitchen toward Papa Smurf’s laboratory. “By the way, Greedy, thanks for letting this smurf try out your new cereal invention. This smurf agrees that the whole village will find it just as enjoyable as this smurf did eating it.”
