Smurfing Around at Sony Pictures Animation
Rob Cesternino at Sony Pictures Animation
Reviewed by Rob Cesternino
In advance of the July 29 release of "The Smurfs," the real wizards (sorry, Gargamel) at Sony Pictures Animation opened up their facilities to the press for one fun-filled afternoon. We were treated to a sneak peak of the film, a roundtable interview with Hank Azaria and Jayma Mays, and the opportunity to both animate and voice our very own Smurfs. Getting to see all the different aspects of the production at work at Sony Pictures Animation was something that truly blue my mind.
The day began with some opening words from the film's director, Raja Gosnell ("Beverly Hills Chihuaha," "Scooby-Doo"), and producer Jordan Kerner ("Charlotte's Web," "Inspector Gadget"). After hearing from the men behind the Smurfs, we got to see our first peek at the Smurfs in 3-D. As the story brings the Smurfs saga into the real world, the hybrid film required almost two years of production work in both live-action and computer animation. To bring the Smurfs to the big screen, the film required 20 million frames of film to be rendered.
The highlight of the afternoon was the opportunity for members of the media to actually voice a Smurf. There were two separate clips available to provide the voices for. We had the option to re-voice Anton Yelchin's work as Clumsy Smurf or Katy Perry's efforts as Smurfette. With all due respect to Mr. Yelchin, I would like to think that my version was a Smurfy interesting alternate take on the scene.
You can judge my performance for yourself by clicking the YouTube video on this page. You can also check out "The Smurfs" on July 29 in theaters nationwide. It's a film that will certainly satisfy family audiences with plenty of jokes and nostalgia for a generation of fans who grew up with "The Smurfs."

PR: Boomerang Celebrates Original Smurfs in Advance of Movie Premiere By Ed Liu 07-01-2011, 11:14 PM Boomerang Celebrates Original SMURFS in Advance of Movie Premiere
Month-long Tribute to Emmy Award-Winning Cartoon Revisits Little Blue Characters Prior to July 29 Film Opening
This July, Boomerang will whet fan appetites for all things "smurfy" as the all-classics cartoon network heralds the worldwide premiere of the new 3D live-action/animated film, The Smurfs, opening Friday, July 29. The commercial-free network will clear its regular schedule across the month to devote morning, afternoon and evening air time each day-Monday-Friday 9-10 a.m., 3-4 p.m. and 8-9 p.m. (ET); Saturday-Sunday 9-10 a.m., 2-4 p.m., 8-9 p.m.-to present all-time favorite episodes of the Emmy Award-winning (Outstanding Children's Entertainment Series) classic animated series, THE SMURFS.
"Children who grew up watching THE SMURFS in the '80s are now having children of their own," said Stacy Isenhower, senior vice president of programming and scheduling for Boomerang and Cartoon Network. "And with the major motion picture coming out at the end of the month, we decided Boomerang's July schedule would offer a great opportunity for the whole family to meet the characters and get to know the many special meanings of the word 'smurfy'."
In fall 1981, a decidedly new cartoon debuted on NBC's Saturday morning lineup. Based on a 1957 Belgian comic strip, THE SMURFS made television history following its premiere by becoming the highest-rated Saturday morning show in eight years, and the NBC's highest-rated animated series since 1970. THE SMURFS follows the lives of little blue people who live in mushrooms. Led by wise magician Papa Smurf, the eclectic crew includes such characters as Brainy, Vanity, Hefty, Clumsy and Smurfette (the only female Smurf), a happy bunch threatened only by the evil wizard Gargamel and his cat Azrael. For nine years on broadcast television (1981-1990), the series chronicled various adventures in Smurf Village, including Gargamel's multiple failed attempts to rid the world of the Smurfs altogether.
Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation will release The Smurfs in 3D worldwide on Friday, July 29. The live-action and animation feature film is directed by Raja Gosnell and stars Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara and Hank Azaria as Gargamel.
Highlights of the month-long tribute include the following favorite episodes: "Sir Hefty" - Tuesday, July 19, 9 a.m. (ET) - A giant fire-breathing dragon roams the forest, torching the trees as it passes. Hefty must fight the fires and defend Smurf Village. He leads the dragon away and is knighted "Sir Hefty Knight of the Smurf Table" by Papa Smurf. "Three Smurfketeers" - Thursday, July 21, 9 a.m. (ET) - The Smurfs put on a play where Hefty, Jokey, and Greedy play the three musketeers, helping Clumsy Smurfingham win Smurfette Smurfington's hand in marriage. "The Haunted Castle" - Friday, July 22, 3:30 p.m. (ET) - Johan and Peewit, a young squire and his sidekick, join the Smurfs to help a ghost of a haunted castle find his rightful heir. "The Littlest Giant" - Sunday, July 24, 9:30 a.m. (ET) - Papa Smurf helps a young runaway giant reunite with his own family.

When my boyfriend, Kevin and I went to see "Cars 2", I found the Smurfs trailer.
The Smurfs (In 3D) - New Trailer - In Theaters 7/29
The Smurfs make their first 3D trip to the big screen in Columbia Pictures'/Sony Pictures Animation's hybrid live-action and animated family comedy, The Smurfs. When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the Smurfs out of their village, they're forced through a portal, out of their world and into ours, landing in the middle of New York's Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.

Blue and white all over
By HANNAH BROWN
JULY 4, 2011 10:28
It’s hard to pin down what is the most unusual element of David N. Weiss’ life and career. On the one hand, he’s one of the top screenwriters of Hollywood children’s movies, and has penned a summer blockbuster, The Smurfs movie in 3-D which will be released in thousands of theaters around the world at the end of July and the first week of August.
But contrary to the stereotype of the aggressive and surly Hollywood player, he is extremely friendly and gracious, politely asking a concierge at a Jerusalem hotel where there is a quiet place for an interview. And Jerusalem in June is a pretty unusual place to find anyone connected with the American movie industry.
But Jerusalem means a lot to Weiss, because he is an Orthodox Jew. While you might not expect real religious devotion from the man best known for writing Shrek 2 (which he co-wrote, as he does all his work, with his writing partner, J. David Stem), Weiss is living proof that a sense of humor and playfulness can co-exist with Orthodoxy.
Asked how he manages to maintain his Orthodox lifestyle in Hollywood, he says he is gradually growing more comfortable with his identity.
“I used to be more baseball cappy,” he says, explaining that he used to always wear baseball caps to his Hollywood meetings.
“I’m less self conscious now. I wear a yarmulke.”
And, in the land of a thousand fad diets, executives are “great about the kosher stuff” if they are ordering lunch.
Weiss didn’t grow up in an observant family, though, and he’s had a long and winding road both to his religious life and his career. Growing up in an American Jewish family loosely affiliated with the Reform movement, Weiss felt he lacked a spiritual anchor, and was drawn to Christianity in his late teens. He became a lay minister, and began producing film presentations for his church that appealed to high schoolers.
Having grown up as a “TV addict,” he respected the power of movies and television, and felt that the church should invest more in entertainment. He and the church raised money to pay his tuition to the prestigious University of Southern California (USC) film school, where he was sent “on a mission to Hollywood.” His final student film, a movie that combined a Christian point of view with fantasy elements such as ogres and dragons, called The Man Who Loved Fat Dancing (a play on the title of the 1973 Western The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing), won several awards and made the film festival circuit. Its success won him an agent and soon he had established himself as a former writer for the popular children’s Rugrats TV series. He co-wrote the two Rugrats movies, with J. David Stem.
HOWEVER, WHILE researching the Jewish roots of Christianity, he found himself interested in Judaism and began taking part in the life of the Los Angeles Orthodox community. Gradually, became observant himself. By the time he wrote The Rugrats Chanukah Special, he had abandoned Christianity for good. He specializes in writing movies for children, and has also written such hits as Clockstoppers (2002) and Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2001). And then came Shrek 2.
While Weiss can joke about ultra-Orthodox friends in California affiliated with the Chabad Movement who refuse to say “Santa Monica” because they won’t utter the word for “saint,” he takes both his faith and his work seriously.
He sees the Smurfs as “delightful, charming little guys” and he feels that the movie about them works for both children and adults because he brings them into the live-action world of contemporary New York.
Katy Perry voices a Smurfette, and he speaks with particular admiration of one of the other actors, Hank Azaria, who, he says, “has a beautiful treasure trove of talent.” Azaria worked on a kind of British professor voice for his character, switching “from Laurence Olivier to Richard Burton until he became a kind of Laurence Burton… He became what you wished you were writing.”
Weiss visits Israel whenever he can – which isn’t as often as he would like – and gives classes when he can at the Ma’aleh School for Television and Film in Jerusalem, as he did on this visit.
“It’s a great school,” he says.
“I am really impressed by the students. They are living in a bit of a pressure cooker and they have interesting stories to tell. They ask piercing questions about storytelling. And they’re struggling with going deeper into a story.”
Weiss shrugs, as if he isn’t the right man for the job.
“I work to create light-hearted studio fare.” While he clearly takes pride in his work, “It’s not Citizen Kane,” he says.
Next up for Weiss, not surprisingly, is The Smurfs sequel, which he is working on even during this visit. But he is happy that he gets to spend some time going to the Kotel and seeing the light show in the Old City with his wife and children this time around.
While he loves his work, he does at times wish he could get back to directing, which he enjoyed in his student days.
But for the time being, he’s doing well, balancing Israelis and Smurfs.

Visiting The Smurfs on their home turf SMURFS CREATIVE TEAM TALKS
Visiting The Smurfs on their home turf
by Joel Amos
July 5, 2011 at 12:00pm EDT
The Smurfs make their big screen debut July 29 and SheKnows was given a first-hand account behind bringing the animated legends to life on the big screen. We visited with stars Jayma Mays and Hank Azaria, practiced the art of animation, recorded our own lines to the Smurf movie in Sony Animation’s studio and saw clips from the upcoming live action-animated film.
Producer Jordan Kerner tells us that when beginning the effort to bring The Smurfs to the big screen, he and director Raja Gosnell visited some other blue creatures’ set.
“I don’t know if you know, but on the Avatar set we always referred to them as the big Smurfs. So there was a real affinity with bringing us over and treating us as a little brother or sister in that way, helping us out,” producer Jordan Kerner said. The visit to Avatar proved immeasurable in their effort. “They helped us a lot with understanding the color blue because there are real challenges with blue. Blue doesn’t hold very easily as a color on screen.”
When The Smurfs clips completed, SheKnows headed upstairs and sat down with the director and producer for a more intimate chat before stars Hank Azaria and Jayma Mays joined us.
Aware of potential issues from fans, director Gosnell immediately stressed why he chose to make The Smurfs a live action film.
“For me, I understood immediately it would be polarizing because everybody wants their Smurf adventures to be in Smurf Village in medieval times. But I think, for audiences coming into this fresh, the opportunity is to see a living, breathing Smurf sitting on their kitchen countertop, riding on top of a cab through New York City, running through F.A.O. Schwarz and through areas that we know,” Gosnell said.
“The wish fulfillment of that I think raises up and if you’re a kid and you see the movie with a Smurf in the kitchen then you want a Smurf in your kitchen. I think that there’s the bar that we set in terms of living, breathing, reality creatures — it’s set even higher when you take those beings and you put them in a place that everybody knows.”
Producer Kerner added, “You know, you make a creative decision going in and you have a belief in what you do. And we just had to ultimately, in the beginning with no apologies, make a decision that we wanted the Smurfs to be living, breathing, caring, funny creatures.”
Mays and Azaria seemed delighted at the opportunity to bring a pop culture sensation to life in The Smurfs. Azaria plays the villainous wizard Gargamel while Mays portrays Grace, the wife of Neil Patrick Harris who discovers Smurfs in their New York apartment which sets the Smurfs movie adventure into motion.
Azaria & Mays work the Smurfs maze
Mays was quick to say that acting opposite special effects was something new to the Glee star. “It’s helpful when you are looking at a bunch of stickers and you don’t know which sticker belongs to whom, even if the lines are being read,” said Mays, explaining that director Gosnell would place Smurf stickers around the set to show the actors where the Smurfs were. “It really helped put you in the right mindset for who you were talking with.”
Azaria also had to interact with the stickers that would eventually become Smurfs and he found a real challenge in acting opposite a feisty feline, Gargamel’s cat Azrael.
“They are a married couple. I did at one point, and it didn’t make it into the movie, I did say at one point to the cat, ‘Why did I ever marry you?'” Azaria said and laughed.
Mays and Harris’ characters are planning to have a baby, something Harris is not so sure he’s ready to embrace. “Neil’s character, Patrick, is a little more apprehensive about becoming a father… It’s kind of nice that these Smurfs come into this world, and even though they are little blue men it is almost a trial run at this thing of being parents. I think it’s a good thing for Grace because she’s testing out her mothering abilities and seeing how that works,” Mays said.
Azaria, known for his vocal talents, most notably as a regular on The Simpsons, had more difficulty pinpointing the voice of Gargamel than he expected. “A character like this, for me the voice is the first thing. I started a little higher — there was a stock villain voice in cartoons when I was growing up,” Azaria said. “They wanted it more Shakespearean — a failed Shakespearean actor was their idea for the character. But I found that to be too low energy. You can’t be Gargamel and not be very amped up and upset about Smurfs. So it got energized, and it ended up sounding a lot like the original cartoon voice, which I could have just started with!”

Gargamel Makes Tim Gunn Gasp in Exclusive 'Smurfs' Clip
http://www.hollywood.com/news/smurfs_clip_exclusive/7814646
Project Runway's Tim Gunn has seen it all: the good, the bad, and most certainly, the ugly. But with all his wisdom, surely nothing prepared him for the snaggletooth evil of the Smurfs' nemesis, Gargamel.
We have an exclusive clip from the upcoming Smurfs featuring Gunn, Hank Azaria as the cartoonish bad guy and Sofia Vergara of Modern Family has a make-up guru who doesn't take kindly to criticism. Little does she realize that Gargamel is a cosmetology expert.
The Smurfs hits theaters July 29.

Sofia Vergara's Smurf-Tastic 39th Birthday Posted Monday July 11, 2011 8:59 AM GMT

Setting off on a south of the border weekend excursion, Sofia Vergara rang in her 39th birthday in Mexico on Sunday (July 10).
The "Modern Family" star was presented with a "Smurfs" birthday cake and took pictures with a mariachi band while happily tweeting, "My happy birthday in Mexico".

And while it happened to be her special day, Miss Vergara actually made the trip alongside Hank Azaria and Neil Patrick Harris to promote their new movie "The Smurfs".
Due in theaters on July 29th, the classic characters are brought back to the big screen as "the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, after which they tumble from their magical world and into ours."

Katy Perry, The Voice of Smurfette
July 10, 2011 03:25 PM EDT
Katy Perry is the voice of Smurfette in the 3D movie 'The Smurfs' to be released in just a few weeks on July 29, 2011. Perry lovers will get to hear the pop star's voice as never before. To play Smurfette is a whole new challenge for Perry - she really had to dig into her imagination to bring life to a simple sketch. The star says she really helped to develop the character of the only female Smurf.
Perry said, "When I'm doing the voice for Smurfette it's really interesting because I get to be a part of creating her character and adding little nuances to her who I guess she is on the big screen. The voice is basically my voice but throw some rocks in it. Just a little bit rockier."
What will audiences think of Katy Perry's interpretation of Smurfette? Does she have the "right" voice for the character? That is sure to be a matter of opinion. It must be a ton of fun to be only the voice and personality of a character.
Katy Perry said 'The Smurfs' is a movie everyone is bound to love. "It's a positive story and it has a sweet side and there's a great message," she says. "It's one of those you can't go wrong type of films. I think it's very family oriented and that's why I wanted to be a part of it."
Everyone is in high anticipation of the Smurfs 3D movie. The entire village of Juzcar in southern Spain has even been painted blue - all of it - as promotion for the film. The town is excited to hold the world premiere of 'The Smurfs' 3D movie - and might even decide to stay painted blue forever.

The BBFC has just rated the movie as "U" in the UK for mild slapstick violence, mild language, and very mild innuendo (presumably that's the "enchanted forest" bit). And they've also provided the running time, it's 102 minutes long! I must say, I'm surprised at that, it's longer than I expected it to be. I thought it would be about 85-90 minutes max.
