The First Book of Origins — Chapter 1 (Evolutionary Retelling)
In the beginning God brought forth the heavens and the earth.
And the earth was without form, a swirling chaos of fire and dust; and darkness covered the deep of space. And the Spirit of God moved over the forming worlds.
And God said, “Let there be light.” And there was light.
And the light came forth from the newborn stars, and the darkness fled before it. God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.
God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And there was evening and morning—the first age.
And God said, “Let the waters be gathered, and let the heavens be stretched above the earth.”
So the world cooled, and the waters gathered upon the face of the deep. And the clouds formed above, and the seas lay below.
God called the vast expanse the Sky. And God saw that it was good.
And there was evening and morning—the second age.
And God said, “Let the dry land appear.”
And the continents rose from the waters, and mountains lifted their heads. The seas gathered into their places, and the land stood firm.
God called the land Earth, and the gathered waters He called Seas.
And God said, “Let the earth bring forth life.”
So the earth sprouted the first living things: simple cells in the ancient seas, then colonies of life that breathed and multiplied.
In time the waters turned green with living growth, and plants arose upon the land— grasses, ferns, and trees bearing seed.
And God saw that it was good.
And there was evening and morning—the third age.
And God said, “Let the lights in the heavens mark the times and the seasons.”
So the sun burned bright by day, and the moon reflected light by night. And the stars filled the sky in their multitudes.
And they marked the ages and the turning of the world.
And God saw that it was good.
And there was evening and morning—the fourth age.
And God said, “Let the waters teem with living creatures.”
So the seas filled with life: strange swimmers with shells and fins, great reptiles of the deep, and countless forms that lived and perished and gave rise to others.
And some rose from the sea and learned to breathe the air. And wings spread across the sky, and birds took flight.
God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the seas and the sky.”
And God saw that it was good.
And there was evening and morning—the fifth age.
And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures.”
So beasts walked upon the land: creatures that crawled, creatures that ran, creatures mighty and small.
Ages passed, and the forms of life changed and grew, each generation shaping the next.
And among the creatures arose those who walked upright and wondered about the heavens.
Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, after our likeness.”
So humanity came forth from the dust of the earth and the long story of life, yet bearing the breath of God— the spark of mind, conscience, and spirit.
Male and female He created them.
And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and care for it. Rule with wisdom over the living things of the earth.”
God looked upon all that had come to be through the ages, and behold, it was very good.
And there was evening and morning—the sixth age.
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast unfolding.
And God rested from His work of creation, not because the work was finished forever, but because the world was set in motion.
And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, for in it He rested from the long labor by which the universe came to be.
