An updated version of the Parable of the Good Samaritan:
During a Bible study, a conservative Christian asked Jesus, "How does anyone gain eternal life?"
"What does it say in your Bible?" Jesus asked. "How do you read it?"
The conservative answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your mind, heart, soul, and strength, and your neighbor as yourself."
"You answered correctly," Jesus said. "Do this and you'll live."
But the conservative wanted to justify himself. "And who exactly would be my neighbor?" he asked.
Jesus replied, "There was a man who was traveling down the street, minding his own business, when a bunch of robbers jumped him, beat him, stripped him, and left him half-dead. Fortunately there was a Christian who happened to walk past him, but when he saw him, he just continued on his way and avoided the man. Then a conservative came along riding a fancy car and saw the man lying there, and he just drove past him. Then came an atheist who was driving a used car, and when he saw the man lying there, he had compassion on him. He stopped the car, got out, bandaged the man with his first-aid kit, and then drove him to the hospital where he could be treated. Then the atheist talked to the people in charge of admission, 'Please take care of him, and if there are any additional charges, send the bill to me, and I will take care of it.' So tell Me, which of the three was a neighbor to the one who fell among the robbers?"
The conservative felt uneasy answering because he knew that it was the atheist that was the neighbor in that story, and he didn't want to admit that publicly. So he simply said, "It was the one who showed mercy to the man."
"So go and do likewise," Jesus said before He left.
