Today, May 9th, is legendary Billy Joel's Birthday!!!! He is turning 64 years old today and I hope you all will wish him a happy smurfday!
Here is the story of how Billy came to be famous. (not to show off or anything, but I came up with this myself and all this info was just off the top of my head.)
William Martin "Billy" Joel was born in 1949 in The Bronx, N.Y. but later his parents and him moved to Hicksville, Long Island and he was born to Rosland Nyman and Howard Joel.
Billy's Parents Billy as a baby His parents divorced when he was about 9 and his father moved to Vienna, Austria. Billy's father Howard Joel was a classically trained pianist and his mother was a singer so there was a lot of music in his life, so at age 4 he started learning how to play piano, and the first song he learned was called "Off We Go to Music Land" from the John Thomson piano course.
Billy and his sister Judith Joel. At around age 6, Billy got tired of piano lessons so he started rebelling against it. He would play music for his mother that sounded like Beethoven, but it wasn't. When Billy was about 9 he got pulled off stage in school for wiggling his hips while doing an Elvis impression.
When Billy was 14, he saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show once, and he says that "They looked like guys I know. They weren't any of those hollywood glamor boys or anything. It was then when I noticed it could be done." A while later Billy was asked to be in a local Long Island band called The Echoes (their named later changed to The Lost Souls). The Echoes/The Lost Souls (Billy is the second one to the left in the white shirt) Eventually when the Lost Souls split up, he joined a second band called The Hassles in 1966 when Billy was about 17. He recorded 2 albums with The Hassles: The Hassles and Hour of the Wolf.
The Hassles (billy is the one on the far right with the red sweater)
Here is the one music video that the hassles made for the song I Hear Voices (btw in the name it says it was billy's 1st band, but as I recently said, it was his second band.):
The hassles split up in 1969 and Billy and the Hassles drummer Jon Small went to form a band called Attila. Attila (Billy left Jon Small right) It was an Organ and Drums heavy metal band, which may seem odd, but here is their one album that they made in 1970:
Attila split up not long after that, and probably one of the main causes is that Billy was starting to crush on Jon's wife Elizabeth Weber. Eventually Elizabeth would leave the drummer for Billy. Billy Joel and Elizabeth Weber (Billy hates having his picture taken and I suspect from the few pictures of Elizabeth I've seen that she wasn't a fan of it either.)
After the split of Attila, Billy decided that he wanted to be a songwriter and not a singer. So he made an album to try to gain popularity for his songs. But the era of the singer songwriter was starting in this time with people like James Taylor. So people mistaken Billy for being a singer/songwriter. But Billy made his first solo album called Cold Spring Harbor, but the person who produced it named Artie Ripp who owned a record company called Family Productions, recorded the album at the wrong speed and Billy's voice came out sounding like a chipmunk. But Billy had signed away everything to Ripp for the rest of his life. (a few of the songs on cold spring harbor, however, would eventually go on to be hits when Billy re-released them, songs like She's Got A Way.)
Cold Spring Harbor
To get out of Artie Ripp's bad record deal, Billy and Elizabeth moved to Los Angeles and got a job at a bar called The Executive Room. Billy got a job as a pianist there and Elizabeth got a job as a cocktail waitress. They worked their for about 6 months, but Billy a while back had preformed one of his songs Captain Jack and someone had taped it and it started being played all over the radio and Colombia Records started hunting down who made Captain Jack. Eventually they found him and Billy signed a contract with Colombia Records.
In 1973 when he released his song Piano Man which was about his experiences working at the bar, this same year he got married to Elizabeth. Piano Man became Billy's first hit and got a lot of airplay and still to this day is Billy's most popular song.
That's the basic story of how Billy Joel became famous. I could go on and on about this since it's my favorite topic, but I'll stop here.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BILLY!!!!

Thanks Smurfette! Yeah, I am just fascinated with Billy's life for some reason, and I have a good memory so I can talk on and on about his life.
