I have 3 precursors to Smurfs. They are colorized and were made in Hong Kong by Empire in 1978. They have a small heart on their feet. I have a pic here: http://hpphoto.com/home/ViewMyAlbum.asp?coll_id=1421254

Those are characters from the "Gnome Family".

They are confuesed as being smurfs all the time, but actually they have nothing to do with them.

They look just like the blue and white smurfs, including the cotton on the hat. I can't believe that there was no trademark infringement on these.
