I'm a big fan of Smurfs, and have an interest in the 'Peyo-era' comics. Meaning, the comics that were published before Peyo passed away in Dec 1992. I understand that he had a whole team write/draw/create comic stories when he was alive, so not all the albums, stories, gags, etc. are only purely by Peyo in every which way. I used to think that LOL, but I've since been enlightened on how comics are created, and just because one name is primarily attached to a story (or comic publication), its much more complex than that.
And complicated. And that's the reason why I was on the internet doing research.
Determining which albums were done during Peyo's life was easy. But it's the one-page stories called Schtroumpferies in French (or translated to Smurferies in English, I guess), and the 1-4 panel Blagues de Schtroumpfs in French (or translated to Smurf Gags in English), that has stumped me. Specifically, the 5 Smurferies volumes published between 1994-2001, and the 5 Gags volumes published between 2007-2012. These are my questions, which are very specific, but that's the world I live in, for better or for worse hahaha:
1. Were the 1-4 panel Gags, and one-page Smurferies, that are each part of their own 5-volume-collections using material that was from when Peyo was alive, or, was it brand new created by his 'studio' personnel after his death? Or was it a mix of both A) Peyo's old material that was previously published in unknown European publications to me (and likewise maybe even UN-published - but finished - material by Peyo that was just filed away and never used before, and B) brand new material by his Studio. And if that is the case, how would I be able to decipher which was 'Peyo-era' and 'Post-Peyo' era within those volumes?
2. If any of the one-page Smurferies found in the 5-volume collection were used in various publications before the 5-volume collection came out, would you know what publications they were in?
Regarding Spirou magazines, I know that's where the Smurfs started. I even have a few of the original mini-recits 'comics' found in them, which I absolutely adore! Great concept for Spirou. I know that the pages of Spirou eventually ran partial pages of a full Smurfs story in each Spirou (thus, a reader would have to keep buying the magazine to eventually finish the story), but my other question is:
3. At anytime DURING the run of these continuing long and short Smurfs comic stories, (or even IN BETWEEN stories, or AFTER a story), did Peyo run one-page Smurferies or 1-4 panel gags? My guess is 'yes' to the Smurferies, and my guess is that they included the Smurferies from the following areas:
Histoires de Schtroumpfs original French album #8 had 52 Smurferies
'Romeos and Smurfette’ and ‘More Romeos and Smurfettes’ sections from original French album #7 had 10 Smurferies
'Smurferies’ section (as a general term) from original French album #10, had 9 Smurferies
'More Smurfy Olympics’ section from original French album #9, had 13 smurferies
Question 3 continued...But with all the years in Spirou, were there ONLY these 84 Smurferies that got cycled (and recycled) within Spirou before Peyo died? Hence, that's all that was made in total by Peyo?
Papercutz has been publishing the English versions of Smurfs comics for years. But for the first 10 years or so, Papercutz within their TPBs, special Hardcopy editions, and Free Comic Book Day issues, published (and republished) ONLY the same 84 Smurferies! Even in the 3-issue 1983 Marvel Comics Smurfs series, and the UK's 70's-80s 'Look-in' magazines, it was the same material still. It made me think that this was all there was. It wasn't until Papercutz started producing The Smurfs Tales series in 2021, that they slowly started including those post-Peyo volumes of Smurferies and Gags I mentioned above in their continuing The Smurfs Tales volumes.
But that lead to my thoughts in Question #1 above.
I've yet to read or hear about an absolute answer. Even if a source says it's Peyo/Studio/Mix of both, it's hard to believe it when another source contradicts it. The indices at the front of the publications don't help either as some put 'Peyo' only, and some put 'Peyo with coordination of Peyo Studio', so I've learned to not take that seriously. So my quest to get proper answers continues.
I appreciate anyone's time they are willing to help, and a big Smurfy thanks!
