Here is a new EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf story written for Mother's Day. Enjoy!
-----
Chapter 1

It was on a quiet night in the Smurf Village, when Empath was sleeping soundly in his bed, when all of a sudden he could sense something...or rather someone. He heard a voice calling his name: Empath. He saw only an old female Smurf who was wearing a flowing blouse and pants with white slippers, her face covered with a veil so the only thing Empath could see was her eyes. And yet the eyes seem...familiar. He didn't remember where he had seen those eyes before, but they were eyes that looked on him with love. A motherly love he had never known before, and yet somehow remembered.

Empath, I know you're there, the voice spoke again. I am coming to you. I don't have much time left to live.

Empath sat bolt upright in bed. He felt himself sweating, even though the only thing he was wearing at that point was his underpants. He felt scared before, but it was never like this. It was like a mysterious piece of his past was being revealed to him at this point, and now he had to respond.

He went downstairs from his bedroom and went over to where Polaris was sleeping. Polaris slowly opened his eyes and saw Empath standing there in his bathrobe, fully awake. "Salutations, fellow Empath," Polaris greeted, sounding a little annoyed to be awakened at that hour of the night. "What seems to be on your mind right now?"

"There's this mysterious Smurf figure who's all dressed in white and has a veil over her face," Empath explained. "She claims to know this smurf, but this smurf doesn't remember where this smurf has seen this face before. She says she's coming to me."

"This one senses what you're trying to say, Empath," Polaris said. "Could this be the Shrouded One of Psychelia?"

"The Shrouded One?" Empath said, sounding curious. "This smurf is not sure of who she really is."

"The Shrouded One is a mysterious figure in Psychelia who is also known as the Psyche Mother," Polaris explained. "Very few Psyches have actually seen her in public among the other Psyches, so there is a lot of curiosity among the Psyches about the actual identity of this person."

"Yet this smurf feels somewhat drawn to her, as if she was an actual part of this smurf's life in Psychelia," Empath said. "Why would that be happening?"

"This one honestly doesn't know, Empath," Polaris said. "It would be better for us to have this kind of discussion in the morning, where the both of us have greater mental clarity to see things thoroughly."

Empath sighed. "This smurf senses that you're right. This smurf apologizes for disturbing your sleep, Polaris."

"This one is your friend and your Psychelian brother, Empath," Polaris said. "You do not need to apologize for anything right now. At least your bit of news has given this one something to ponder about."

Empath yawned. "Well, this smurf is going to try getting back to sleep. This smurf will see you in the morning, hopefully."

"May you have a restful night's sleep, Empath," Polaris said, watching as Empath headed back upstairs before he went back to sleep.

...

Empath woke up, feeling refreshed but also rather puzzled. From that point where he had that "dream" of what Polaris called "the Shrouded One", when he went back to sleep after talking to Polaris, he didn't seem to have any other dreams. But Empath wondered if that really was a dream. Why would someone he didn't seem to remember from his past be calling out his name, and why did that voice sound so familiar? These were questions that he hoped to find the answers to in his waking hours.

He got dressed and joined the rest of the Smurfs at breakfast in the dining commons. Polaris sat beside Empath while they enjoyed their separate meals together. Polaris noticed that Empath was rather silent during his meal. "Empath, may this one ask about your mental condition, because you have been silent ever since you woke up this morning?" Polaris asked.

"I'm still thinking about the Shrouded One in my dreams, Polaris," Empath answered. "This smurf can't let go of the fact that there's something about her that's also part of this smurf's upbringing in Psychelia, some sort of hidden history that this smurf doesn't remember."

"That's rather curious, Empath," Polaris said. "That makes this one wonder as well if the Shrouded One does have a personal interest in you beyond what other Psyches may know about her activities, which is very little."

"This smurf wonders what exactly this Shrouded One does in her days among the Psyches," Empath said. "This smurf could only imagine how she would try to entertain herself in a world where personal expression is forbidden."

"The Psyche Master does not allow us to meditate on such matters that are not any of our concern to know about, Empath," Polaris said. "We can only pray for the well-being of the Shrouded One, that the Great Ancestors will continue to protect her no matter what happens."

Empath sighed. "This smurf will have to agree with you on that, Polaris."

Just then, Tapper, Duncan McSmurf, and Smurfette joined Empath and Polaris at the breakfast table. "Smurf o' the morning to you, my fellow Empath," Tapper greeted as he sat down with his meal. "I sense in my spirit that you have smurfed a very troubling dream last night."

"Michty me, I could only wonder what would be troubling the lad last night," Duncan said. "You don't seem to be smurfing your chipper mood this morning, Empath."

"Empath, are you okay?" Smurfette asked, sounding concerned. "Do you need to talk to us, or to me personally?"

"It's just a dream that this smurf had of someone who claims to know me, although this smurf knows very little about her, Smurfette," Empath replied. "It's someone called the Shrouded One of Psychelia."

"Oh, now I understand," Tapper said. "This is something that you might want to talk to Papa Smurf about alone, Empath, if this has anything to smurf with your past in Psychelia."

"I could only wonder what this Shrouded One of Psychelia even wants with you, laddie," Duncan said. "Maybe she's the mother that you never had in that smurfed place."

"I would be curious to meet this Shrouded One face to face, Empath," Smurfette said.

"Well, she said that she was coming, Smurfette," Empath said. "As for the reason, however, this smurf only knows that she doesn't have much time left. It may be that she's reaching the end of her life."

"That's sad to know that she's dying, Empath," Tapper said. "I pray that she will come to know the Lord before her passing from this life."

"She may end up joining the Great Ancestors instead of this Almighty you keep smurfing about, Tapper," Duncan said. "Who knows what she truly believes in?"

"If it's any comfort for you, Empath, I just want to let you know that I'm there smurfing beside you, whatever you decide to smurf," Smurfette said, putting her hand on Empath's upper arm.

Empath looked at Smurfette. "Thank you, Smurfette. That really means a lot to this smurf."

---

After breakfast, Empath met with Papa Smurf in his laboratory to talk privately to him about his "dream" of the Shrouded One. Papa Smurf just stroked his beard as he listened to everything Empath had to say.

"I never smurfed of this Shrouded One before, Empath," Papa Smurf said. "Who exactly is she?"

"From what this smurf knows of Psychelian legends, she is the consort of the Psyche Master, who lives separately from him in her own residence in Psychelia," Empath responded. "She rarely shows herself in public, which has led to a lot of speculation among the Psyches as to her personal activities."

"Was this Shrouded One trying to communicate with you in some way?" Papa Smurf asked.

"This smurf assumes that she is, Papa Smurf," Empath answered. "She says that she's coming, and that she doesn't have much time left to live."

"I see," Papa Smurf said. "Well, consmurfering the situation we had with the Psyches during the time that Polaris smurfed away from Psychelia, I'm not too eager in smurfing another encounter with them anytime soon."

"This smurf doesn't sense that she is a runaway like Polaris was during the time he left Psychelia," Empath said.

"Nevertheless, Empath, we're still going to be careful with this encounter," Papa Smurf said. "As long as she smurfs in peace, we will extend to her our well wishes and greetings. But the moment this causes a war with the Psyches, I want you and Polaris to smurf this Shrouded One back where she belongs, with no questions. Do you understand?"

Empath sighed. "This smurf understands and acknowledges, Papa Smurf."

...

Later in the day, Empath met with Hefty, Handy, and Duncan at the Smurf River Bridge, where the Smurfs were busy at work doing maintenance and repair jobs on the bridge itself.

"We should have the bridge fully smurfed and ready for use at the end of the day, Empath," Handy reported.

"This smurf appreciates the report, Handy," Empath said. "This smurf is certain that the other Smurfs will be pleased with the news."

"Funny, you don't smurf to be so enthusiastic about this," Hefty commented. "Are you all right?"

"This smurf is functioning normally, Hefty, you don't need to worry about this smurf," Empath said, sounding a bit hasty and defensive.

"Ah, lay off the laddie, Hefty," Duncan said. "He's smurfing through some personal things that's none of our smurfness to know about."

"I just want to make smurf our assistant counselor is actually smurfing his job, Gutsy!" Hefty shot back. "How I handle it here is my smurfness!"

"Gee, smurf it easy there, brother," Handy said. "I wouldn't want to smurf myself on Empath's bad side if I were you."

But Empath wasn't paying any attention to the conversation. He was hearing a sweet gentle melody in his head...a melody that sounded very familiar, as if he had known that melody before, but couldn't place where he first heard it.

"Empath, laddie, what's smurfing on?" Duncan asked, noticing Empath just standing there, saying and doing nothing.

Empath shook his head slightly, realizing that Duncan was talking to him. "This smurf apologizes. Just something that's on this smurf's mind at this point."

"Maybe you should smurf the care of the bridge over to us, Empath," Handy said. "We'll make smurf that things smurf along fine while you attend other things."

Empath nodded. "Maybe this smurf should..."

"EMPATH! COME QUICK!" a voice shouted.

Empath turned and saw the Smurflings approach the work site, with Sassette racing ahead of the other three. "Smurflings! What seems to be the problem?" Empath asked.

"Tracker's found a mysterious Smurf out in the forest, Empath," Nat answered.

"Yeah, she's all covered in white, and she's smurfing a veil over her face," Snappy added.

"He sent us to come smurf you so that you can smurf for yourself," Slouchy chimed in.

Empath nodded. "This smurf will accompany you to where Tracker is with this mysterious Smurf, Smurflings," he said. "Sorry, my fellow Smurfs, but duty calls. This smurf will check in later."

"Be careful out there, Empath," Handy said, with himself, Hefty, and Duncan watching as Empath headed into the forest with the Smurflings.

...

Empath followed the Smurflings back to where Tracker was with the mysterious Smurf, cradling her in his arms. "A jolly smurf thing you're here, Empath," Tracker said. "I don't think the poor Smurf is responding."

Empath got a closer look at the Smurf that Tracker was holding. He recognized her. "Great Ancestors...that's the Shrouded One!" he exclaimed.

"The Shrouded One? What are you smurfing about there?" Tracker asked.

"Yeah, Empath, who is this 'Shrouded One'?" Sassette asked.

"It's someone that this smurf remembers from Psychelia, but mostly as legend...until now," Empath answered. He knelt down and touched her hand. "This smurf senses that this smurf somehow knows her deeply."

"You mean...she's the one who raised you in Psychelia?" Nat asked.

"I wouldn't think that Empath would even smurf a mother figure in that place," Slouchy said.

Empath lightly scanned her with a telepathic scan. "She's still alive, but just barely. Don't worry, Smurflings, this smurf will take very good care of her and will bring her to the infirmary immediately."

"I hope that she's all right, Empath," Snappy said, watching with the other four as Empath took the Shrouded One in his arms and carried her back to the Smurf Village.

Chapter 2

Meanwhile, in the village, Clumsy was watching Brainy sitting by a tree, writing something on a scroll. "Gosh, Brainy, what are you so hard at work smurfing about this time?" Clumsy asked.

"I'm creating a message for the upcoming Sunday Assembly, Clumsy, about the immoral practice of private dancing," Brainy answered, not taking his eyes away from the scroll. "I think it's shameful for a Smurf to be engaging in such a ritual that wastes their own personal 'smurfsong' to smurf with a future partner."

"But why would you want to prevent Smurfs from smurfing something natural which Papa Smurf says is usual for a Smurf to engage in privately?" Clumsy asked.

"Because I don't think it's appropriate for a Smurf to debase himself with some animal behavior that is likely to smurf into moral degeneration, Clumsy," Brainy said with a bit of distaste in his voice. "I think Mother Nature and Father Time has smurfed this special gift of intimacy that is meant to be smurfed only in the bonds of smurfy matrimony."

"But how are you going to get Smurfs to stop this...private dancing?" Clumsy asked.

"I"m glad you asked that kind of question, because I have just smurfed a new book called Brainy's Guide To Self-Control And Mastery Over Your Habits," Brainy answered, holding up a copy of the book in question.

"Golly, you think every Smurf doesn't have any control over their own habits, Brainy?" Clumsy asked.

"I'm sure there are a few Smurfs who are in control of their own actions, Clumsy, like Empath and Papa Smurf and Smurfette for a few examples," Brainy answered. "This is for the other Smurfs in our village who may need to smurf some good advice on how to smurf some self-control. Especially when it smurfs to their private dancing!"

"You seem all smurfed up on the Smurfs smurfing their private dancing, Brainy," Clumsy said. "I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable having some Smurf watch over me to make sure that I'm not smurfing that."

"You'll see that what I'm smurfing is for the best for every Smurf, Clumsy," Brainy said, smiling a bit meanly as he looked at Clumsy during a pause in his writing.

Then suddenly Brainy and Clumsy saw Empath rushing into the village carrying someone in his arms. "Gosh, there goes Empath, smurfing whoever that is into the village," Clumsy said. "I wonder what's smurfing on."

"I have a feeling that what's going on isn't going to be smurfy at all, Clumsy," Brainy said as he and Clumsy watched the scene together.

---

Doctor was inside the infirmary reading a book on medicine when he heard Empath entering. He put down the book and approached Empath. "Great Smurfness, Empath, what's smurfing on?" Doctor asked. "Who's this smurf you're carrying here?"

"This is the Shrouded One of Psychelia, Doctor," Empath answered. "She needs a place where she can rest. This smurf can sense that she's slowly dying."

"Sure, Empath, you can smurf her on one of the beds in here," Doctor said, leading him to the sleeping quarters. Empath carried the Shrouded One to one of the beds and carefully laid her down on it.

Papa Smurf, Tapper, and Polaris entered the infirmary. "I have sensed in my spirit that we have a visitor, Empath, so I brought Papa Smurf here with me," Tapper said as they stood beside Empath near the bedside.

"This one has also sensed who it is that you have brought into the infirmary, Empath," Polaris said. "But this one never expected to see the Shrouded One in person."

"Is she all right, Empath?" Papa Smurf asked.

"She's very weak, Papa Smurf," Empath answered. "This smurf wishes to stay by her side to see if she awakens."

"I will pray for her awakening as well, Empath," Tapper said, sounding concerned.

Just then, Smurfette entered the infirmary, stopping by the Shrouded One's bedside. "Oh, dear, I feel like we have someone special from Psychelia visiting us, Empath," Smurfette said when she looked at the Shrouded One.

"This is the Shrouded One of Psychelia, Smurfette," Empath said. "This smurf can sense that she's slowly dying."

"How long do you think that she has to live, Empath?" Smurfette asked.

"At the most, a few days," Empath answered. "But given her condition, she may not even last that long."

"We'll smurf our best to make her as comfortable as we can, Smurfette," Doctor said, trying to sound optimistic.

"Empath, I would like to smurf a word with you alone," Papa Smurf said.

Empath understood. "If you'll excuse us, this smurf and Papa Smurf need to smurf some private words alone," he told the other Smurfs.

"You can smurf my office if you want privacy, Empath," Doctor said, pointing to a nearby room.

"Thank you, Doctor," Papa Smurf said as he and Empath stepped into the room and closed the door. When it was just him with Empath, Papa Smurf spoke. "Empath, I know that we should care for those who are not like us, even when they're dying, but I'm not comfortable with the fact that this is someone from Psychelia who's in our care."

"This smurf understands your concern, Papa Smurf," Empath said. "This smurf could imagine that the Psyche Master is already aware of the situation and may send his Psychelian Elite Guard to deal with it."

"That's what I want to avoid smurfing here, Empath," Papa Smurf said. "You're in charge of smurfing her care in the village, but you're also responsible for making sure this doesn't smurf the wrath of the Psyche Master upon us. If he decides that we need to surrender the Shrouded One to the Psyches, then we will do so without smurfing a fight between us and them. Do you understand?"

"This smurf understands and acknowledges, Papa Smurf," Empath said, nodding gravely.

"Empath, come to the bed quickly!" Polaris called out. "This one is sensing a stirring within the Shrouded One"

"This smurf is coming," Empath said. He and Papa Smurf left Doctor's office and joined the other Smurfs by the Shrouded One's bedside, with Polaris sitting beside her monitoring her condition.

The Shrouded One's eyes slowly opened. She looked at her surroundings. "I must be in the Smurf Village," she said. "It's been years since I was last smurfing in this place."

"Yes, you're among the Smurfs, my dear," Papa Smurf said. "Is there anything we can call you besides the Shrouded One?"

"You can call me...the Psyche Mother," the Shrouded One said. "The Shrouded One is a name that the Psyche Master has told the Psyches to call me by, since I'm not allowed to smurf anywhere else in Psychelia."

"It's odd that you call yourself the Psyche Mother and yet you talk like a Smurf, Shrouded One," Polaris said. "Is there a reason for this?"

"The Psyche Master would never let the Psyches know that their parents are actually Smurfs, my child," the Psyche Mother said. "It is a secret that he has carefully guarded, such as the proof of my existence among the Psyches. I have been a prisoner of Psychelia for most of my known life, never allowed to leave for fear that I would never return to the Psyche Master."

"So why did you leave, Psyche Mother?" Empath asked.

"I came here to see you, Empath, before I die," the Psyche Mother answered. "There's something you need to know about us that I feel can only be shared between you and me."

"This smurf can feel a connection between us, as if he knew each other in a way that's more...familial," Empath said.

"Yes, there is," the Psyche Mother said. "You see, that I am your mother...the one who raised you in Psychelia before your day of emergence."

Empath's eyes widened. "You're...my mother? This smurf doesn't remember you at all!"

"But I know you, Empath," the Psyche Mother said. "During the years between when you were given to us by Papa Smurf and the day of emergence, you were with me, quietly raised into the Smurf you are now. The Psyche Master never wanted you to know that, so in order to protect you, I erased your memory of me, but planted in you a special song that you will recognize."

Empath thought of what he heard. "Yes...this smurf does remember the music. But that's all this smurf remembers of you."

"Papa Smurf, this one senses that Empath and the Psyche Mother desire to be alone together," Polaris said.

Papa Smurf nodded. "I'm smurfing you in charge of the Psyche Mother's care while she is here, Empath. But remember that she's only here until the Psyche Master smurfs otherwise. We'll be smurfing outside in case you need us."

"This smurf appreciates it, Papa Smurf," Empath said. He watched as Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Tapper, Doctor, and Polaris all left the infirmary together.

...

Hefty and Duncan met the five Smurfs outside the infirmary. "What's smurfing on, Papa Smurf?" Hefty asked.

"I'm going to be smurfing you in charge of the village until further notice, Hefty," Papa Smurf said. "Empath needs to smurf some time alone with someone from his past."

"I feel for the laddie right now, Papa," Duncan said. "I can't imagine what he must be smurfing through when someone from his past just smurfs up out of nowhere."

"But what does that have to smurf with us, Papa Smurf?" Hefty asked.

"I honestly don't have all the answers to that, Hefty," Papa Smurf answered. "However, I would appreciate it if we would all give Empath and his guest the space that they need to smurf things out together."

"Aye, if that is what the laddie wishes, Papa Smurf," Duncan said, nodding in agreement.

Chapter 3

When it was just Empath and the Psyche Mother alone with each other in the infirmary, the Psyche Mother spoke. "The day that I heard that the Psyche Master adopted you as one of the Psyches, I felt my heart leap, because it felt like we were getting a legitimate son after all the years of not being intimate with each other."

"You wanted a son?" Empath asked. "What happened between you and the Psyche Master that made you be so distant to each other?"

"It started years ago when I, Lumina, and the Psyche Master, who at that time was called Daystar, were still members of the Smurf Village, Empath," the Psyche Mother answered. "You see, Daystar wasn't the only one who was blessed with telepathic and telekinetic abilities. I too was born with the same. But where I sought to use my powers to help my fellow Smurfs, Daystar sought to use them to dominate others and make them do his will. He was never too fond of how much Smurfs behaved like animals, according to his view of the world. He thought that, if he could impose his order upon the Smurfs of that time, he could change Smurf society for the better. But the Smurfs of that time were too resistant of his mind control, and over time they got to the point where they would call for his expulsion from the village, and they banned all use of supernatural powers from that point on."

"That's when you decided to leave with the Psyche Master?" Empath asked.

The Psyche Mother sighed. "Not willingly, but I hoped that if Daystar would see how alike we really are, we could form our own village and raise up Smurfs that would honor his ideals and obey them. But Daystar wanted something else. He wanted to create a people of his own that were completely different from the Smurfs, and so he developed the first generation of Psyches from his own DNA. I thought they looked too much like human beings, but Daystar thought that they were perfect for his vision, and so over time worked on perfecting the Psyches so that they would be the kind of people that would embody his vision of a perfect race."

"But this smurf senses you felt alienated by the Psyche Master's desire to create Psyches instead of having a child with you," Empath said.

"Unfortunately yes, Empath, I did feel that way," the Psyche Mother said. "Over the years the Psyche Master treated me like I was a prisoner in his own little private world, a world where I was symbolically a mother but had no real presence among his creations. He gave me the title of the Shrouded One, and protected my identity for years in the hopes that the Psyches would not know or realize that their creators were actually Smurfs. I suffered years of waiting for the Psyche Master to change his mind and have a child with me, but those years were spent in vain, and I ended up becoming barren and fruitless because I have waited too long on a desire that would never be fulfilled in this life."

"So that's why you latched onto this smurf when this smurf was adopted by the Psyche Master?" Empath said, sounding curious. "This smurf was the child you wanted but you never got to have with the Psyche Master."

"You were an answer to a lifelong prayer, Empath," the Psyche Mother said. "After your memory was erased, you were brought to me at my private little residence, where I was told that I would raise you until you were old enough to be among the other Psyches in the K generation. So I raised you and kept you safe and taught you things that you would soon lose memory of, because the Psyche Master didn't want you to remember the fact that you were born a Smurf instead of created as a Psyche."

"But this smurf still doesn't remember you," Empath said.

"I can correct that by sharing my memories with you, if you would like," the Psyche Mother said.

Empath nodded. "This smurf would very much appreciate that, Psyche Mother."

"Then hold my hand, and we will go back in time together to the point where I have raised you," the Psyche Mother said, extending a hand toward Empath. He held her hand firmly in his own and closed his eyes, and then suddenly he could feel himself going back in time to the point where the Psyche Mother remembered adopting him as her own. He could feel her touch, he could hear her voice, he could see everything in that cramped little world that was the Psyche Mother's residence. What he could not see, however, was her face. It was always covered in a veil, as if that was the only secret she was keeping from him.

The sensation lasted only a minute, and then Empath opened his eyes and looked at the Psyche Mother. "This smurf remembers everything," he said. "You were the mother this smurf wishes this smurf always had."

"Then I am happy that you recognize me after all these years, Empath," the Psyche Mother said.

...

Meanwhile, Tapper was holding a private conversation with Duncan, Smurfette, and Polaris in his tavern.

"I don't understand how the laddie would have a mother figure smurfing over him during his years of being in Psychelia, Tapper," Duncan said. "I know his real mother died in the Smurf Village during that plague that consmurfed all our parents except for Papa Smurf."

"I'm just as amazed to know that as well, my good friend," Tapper said. "Apparently there's still some good that smurfed from that place regarding Empath's upsmurfing among the Psyches if Empath smurfed out to be the Smurf that he is now."

"I'm just curious as to why the Psyches are never allowed to smurf in the presence of the Shrouded One in Psychelia," Smurfette said.

"The Shrouded One has always been a mystery among the Psyches, Smurfette," Polaris said. "Our legends say that she is the mother of all Psyches, that every Psyche that has ever existed came from her matrix and were placed in gestation chambers so that they could develop to the age where the Psyche Master would begin to teach them the Psychelian way."

"She must have been a pretty busy mother to have smurfed all those children from her matrix, if what the legends smurf is true," Duncan said.

"But the Psyche Master told Empath that all the Psyches smurfed from the Psyche Master's own DNA," Smurfette said. "So which is the correct interpretation?"

"I wouldn't know all there is about Psychelian culture to answer that question, my dear Smurfette," Tapper said. "There are even things in the Holy Scriptures themselves that make me question whether they actually happened or are just metaphors, like the creation of the world back in Genesis."

"Pretty bold of you to admit that, laddie, being the only expert of the Holy Scriptures in the village," Duncan said.

"In any case, Smurfette, whatever the actual origin, the Psyches do revere the Shrouded One, though not to the same level as they do the Psyche Master," Polaris said. "It would be painful for them to know that the Shrouded One is preparing for her Day of Ascension, when she will be joining the Great Ancestors."

"You believe that all Psyches will be smurfing with the Great Ancestors of your religion, Polaris?" Smurfette asked.

"Not all Psyches will have the privilege, Smurfette," Polaris answered. "Only those who are found worthy of complete obedience to the Psyche Master's will are the ones who will be allowed that privilege."

Duncan sighed. "I guess I'm glad that Tapper's religion isn't all about works, but about faith, as he smurfs it."

"Indeed it is, Duncan," Tapper said. "And I pray that all beings and creations will come to know the Lord who created them before they smurf away from this world."

...

Empath was still talking with the Psyche Mother when the Smurflings came into the infirmary. "Hi, Empath," Sassette greeted. "We wanted to meet the new visitor of the village while she's still around."

"I hope she wouldn't mind us smurfing her while she's resting in peace, Empath," Nat said.

"Not at all, Smurflings," Empath said. "Psyche Mother, these are Nat, Snappy, Slouchy, and Sassette."

"I'm pleased to meet you, though I wish it were under better circumstances," the Psyche Mother said.

"Why is your face covered with a veil?" Snappy asked.

"Yeah, you have nothing to hide from us Smurfs," Slouchy said.

"I'm afraid to let my true face show, even among Smurfs, my children," the Psyche Mother said. "I have been living a long time in this condition, and it's one of the things I promised never to let others look at."

"Aw, that's a terrible shame, Psyche Mother," Sassette said. "I'm sure you must be really beautiful under the veil."

"Is there anything we can smurf to make your stay comfortable?" Nat asked.

"I won't be here for long, my child," the Psyche Mother answered. "But I appreciate the thought. I have all that I need right here and now."

"We'll pray to Mother Nature and Father Time for you," Slouchy said.

"Let's leave Empath alone with the Psyche Mother, Smurfs," Snappy said. "I'm sure that's what they really want right now."

"Bye, Psyche Mother, and please smurf well," Sassette said as the four Smurflings headed for the door.

After the Smurflings left, the Psyche Mother looked at Empath. "Are those Smurflings your children, Empath?" she asked.

"Actually, they're my brothers and sister in the village, Psyche Mother," Empath answered. "Nat, Snappy, and Slouchy came from Smurfling Island, and Sassette was trapped in a crystal for years until she was released."

"So when are you planning to settle down with Smurfette, whom I sense you're in love with?" the Psyche Mother asked.

"Smurfette and this smurf are not ready yet to commit our lives to each other, Psyche Mother," Empath answered. "We will get married when the time is right for us."

"I wish that I could be there for the marriage, Empath," the Psyche Mother said. "It would be the most beautiful thing that I would get to witness before my passing."

"This smurf wishes you could have that moment of witness," Empath said. "But this smurf doesn't want to force anything on Smurfette that she is not ready for."

"I understand, Empath," the Psyche Mother said. "It would be just enough to see you for one last time before I go."

"This smurf is sorry that we had to meet again like this, Psyche Mother," Empath said.

"Now that we're alone, please...remove the veil from my face," the Psyche Mother said. "I want you to see me as I am as my last gift to you."

Empath carefully removed the veil from the Psyche Mother's face. He was surprised to see a beautiful female Smurf face, though aged gracefully with lines, underneath the veil. Empath smiled at the sight.

The Psyche Mother sighed with relief. "I can sense that you're happy to see my true face, Empath. Just remember that I love you always and forever."

"I love you too, Psyche Mother," Empath said, his eyes filling with tears.

The Psyche Mother smiled as she closed her eyes and breathed her last. Empath put her veil back over her face and wept.

...

Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Tapper, Duncan, and Polaris were waiting outside the infirmary when Empath came outside to meet with them. They could see from Empath's face that something terrible has happened.

"The Psyche Mother has gone to be with the Ancestors," Empath said gravely.

Papa Smurf and Smurfette looked sorrowful. "I'm sorry to hear that, Empath," Papa Smurf said. "Our condolences are with you."

"I wish that I was there with you to smurf her passing, Empath," Smurfette said, her eyes full of tears.

"I pray that her smurfing from this world was without pain, Empath," Tapper said.

"I certainly don't envy how you're feeling right now, Empath," Duncan said. "My heart smurfs out for you."

"We should prepare for her memorial as soon as possible, so that the other Smurfs will share in the grief of her passing," Polaris said, nodding with acceptance.

Chapter 4

A day later, the Smurfs gathered around the Smurf Village Theater for a special memorial service. Brainy had the Village Orchestra play a funeral dirge at the beginning of the service. Most of the Smurfs were confused, not knowing who the service was actually for. Near the stage, the Psyche Master's body was laid upon a bed of flowers that were picked by Vanity and Smurfette. Her face was still covered with a veil, so nobody else could see her actual face.

After the dirge had ended, Papa Smurf took the stage. "My little Smurfs, we are here together to honor the life of a Smurf who briefly smurfed back home to us to smurf the village one last time before her passing. Now I know a good deal of you may be confused, and some a bit angry, over who it is that smurfed home to us, for she is the Psyche Mother, the partner of the Psyche Master. However, I would kindly ask you to smurf aside your bitter feelings for a while to sympathize with the only Smurf who knew her better than most of us. So I would like Empath to smurf you a few words about the Psyche Mother."

Papa Smurf stepped aside and let Empath take center stage. "My fellow Smurfs, this smurf honestly didn't know who the Psyche Mother was until she had transferred her memories to this smurf, and now this smurf knows that she was the mother that this smurf had while this smurf was in Psychelia during the first 50 years of this smurf's life. She took care of this smurf, fed this smurf, dressed this smurf, taught this smurf how to walk and speak. It was a childhood that this smurf never knew this smurf actually had when this smurf was in Psychelia, but this smurf could sense that there was a deep love from her that she had for this smurf, for this smurf was like the son she always wished she had but could never have because of her relationship with the Psyche Master.

"This smurf had those memories erased from this smurf's memory by the Psyche Mother herself to protect this smurf during the remaining 100 years that this smurf spent in Psychelia. She regretted having to do that because of the bond that she and this smurf had developed during those 50 years, but she never regretted those years that she had with this smurf because they helped make this smurf into the Smurf that this smurf is now. This smurf prays that her spirit will now be accepted among the Great Ancestors who watch over us and guide us to the path of righteousness so that she will rest in peace in Elysium for as long as she lives."

Empath stepped aside and let Tapper have some words. "My fellow Smurfs, it grieves my heart to know that a fellow Smurf that we didn't know about until recently has smurfed away from this life, and I honestly don't know where she'll end up after this life. But I do know a God who loves us and wants us to be part of His everlasting Kingdom. He has sent His only begotten Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins and offer us eternal life with God by believing in Him. Today I would ask you humbly to receive the Lord Jesus as your Savior before your time on earth is through, because nobody knows the day or hour of our final exit, and there's only two places we will go when we smurf our last breath -- to heaven, to be with the Lord God Almighty forever, or to hell, where we will smurf eternity apart from the Almighty. I pray that today you will all smurf the right decision for your lives. That is all I have to say. To God be the glory. Amen."

Then Smurfette had a few words to say. "I honestly wish that I was there with Empath during the final moments of the Psyche Mother's life to know what kind of Smurf she really was, but I have a feeling she wanted to smurf her final moments here with us to smurf us all a lesson about life and how valuable it is to smurf the best of the moments you have left with the ones you love. I can smurf on Empath's face that he really loved the Psyche Mother, and that if it were possible, he could have saved her life and allowed her to live long with us. I pray that the Psyche Mother will find her rest and peace among the Smurfs in the smurfy hereafter now that she's gone from us."

Finally Polaris had something to say. "My fellow Smurfs, this one lives as an outsider among you, and yet this one senses that most of you have accepted this one as one of you. This one is surprised to find out that the Psyche Mother actually exists, and that she is a Smurf just like the Psyche Master. However, this one admires the fact that she bravely left Psychelia like this one had to seek asylum among the Smurfs, even if it was for a few days. This one can sense the bond between her and Empath that was never given to any of the Psyches, and this one does admit to feeling a bit envious of that unique relationship. Despite this, this one is honored to know the Psyche Mother for the brief window of time that we had with her, and this one prays for her Day of Ascension to be with the Great Ancestors of Psychelia."

Before another Smurf had a chance to say anything, the Smurfs witnessed two Psyches dressed in black bodysuits with black togas covering them. Empath and Polaris knew that this was the Mortuary caste that was sent by the Psyche Master. They were both carrying a glass coffin together as they landed.

"The Psyche Master interrupts this gathering to inform you that he has sensed the death of the Shrouded One, and so he has sent us to gather her body and bring it back to Psychelia for proper disposal," one of the Psyches said.

"Do not interfere with our actions, or else the Psyche Master will consider this an act of aggression against the Psyches," the other Psyche said.

The Smurfs watched helplessly as the two Psyches lifted the Psyche Mother's body and placed it inside the coffin, sealing it shut. Then they both carried the coffin together as they leaped into the sky and left the village.

Empath felt a bit of anger while he was watching this happen. "Who does the Psyche Master think he is, interrupting a memorial service to honor the Psyche Mother, by sending the Mortuary caste to take her body away from here?" he asked.

"This one understands how you feel, Empath, but the Psyche Mother still belongs to Psychelia, and we need to honor the Psyche Master's wishes even if we're no longer members of Psychelia," Polaris said.

"I agree with Empath, laddie," Duncan said. "That was rather rude of them to smurf down upon us and smurf away her body like that in the middle of a funeral."

"Since when did the Psyche Master really care about her, anyway?" Smurfette asked, angry tears filling her eyes.

"We must let it go, Smurfette," Tapper said. "I don't want to see us and the Psyches smurf to war with each other over the body of the Psyche Mother."

"Please, my little Smurfs, let's smurf some order here," Papa Smurf said, addressing the crowd. "I know what the Psyche Master smurfed here was inappropriate, but we must not let our emotions smurf the better of us in our time of grieving. We will close out our service and smurf on with the rest of our lives in memory of her."

Brainy had the Village Orchestra play another song as a closing tune. The other Smurfs bowed their heads respectfully, as if praying for Mother Nature and Father Time to comfort them in their time of mourning.

After the service ended, Empath, Smurfette, Polaris, Tapper, and Duncan talked with each other. "Michty me, laddie, there's got to be something we can smurf to smurf the body of the Psyche Mother out of their hands," Duncan said.

"The only wise thing we can do, fellow Duncan, is to do nothing," Polaris said. "This matter is entirely out of our hands now, as much as we would want to honor what the Psyche Mother would have wanted regarding her passing from this life."

"I don't like having to smurf by and watch it happen, Polaris, but I honestly agree with you," Tapper said.

"Well, I don't agree with this decision at all!" Smurfette said. "They have no right to just smurf here and smurf her body away like it belongs entirely to the Psyche Master."

"This smurf understands how you feel, Smurfette," Empath said. "But this smurf isn't in the mood to start a war over who has rights over a dead body. This smurf just wants to put this whole matter to bed and not think about it anymore."

"We'll respect your decision, Empath," Polaris said.

...

A day later, Smurfette met Empath at the Smurf Village Memorial Park, where he was standing next to a statue of the Psyche Mother, which was recently erected in honor of her memory.

"How are you feeling, Empath?" Smurfette asked gently.

Empath sighed. "It feels like this smurf both gained a mother and lost her all within the space of a day, Smurfette."

"I'm sure she must have loved you enough to want to smurf those final moments with you," Smurfette said.

"If only this smurf didn't have those memories of her erased by the time this smurf was a young Smurfling, Smurfette," Empath said.

"She was only trying to protect you, Empath," Smurfette said. "That's the best that any mother can hope to smurf with their children."

Empath looked at Smurfette. "This smurf appreciates you being here for me, Smurfette. I don't think that I can smurf another moment of my life without you."

"I'll always be with you, Empath, no matter what," Smurfette said, putting her hand on Empath's shoulder as they stood beside the statue and watched the day go by.

THE END
