 Smurf Covers of Look-In Magazines
Look-In Magazine featured a Smurfs comic strip in several issues and sometimes a Smurf was even on the cover!
Look-In magazine was a children's comic magazine (also known as "The Junior TV Times") aimed at children and teens in the 7 to 14 year old age group. It was published weekly in the UK. It ran from January 9, 1971 to March 12, 1994 and included popular children's TV program comic strips, as well as interviews and color pin-up pages featuring TV stars and pop idols.
The Smurfs comic strips were a mainstay of Look-In Magazine, with the first issue featuring "Meet the Smurfs!" in September 1978. The magazine continued to publish the Smurfs comic strips until August 1981, when it changed direction and began featuring other comic strips.
Some special Look-In magazines included a free Smurf gift like a sticker or poster.

 Look-In Magazine No. 51 16 December 1978
It's Father Abraham and The Smurfs plus The Muppets on the cover of Look-In magazine!
Father Abraham and the Smurfs Pin-Up
BLUE IS THE COLOUR!
It certainly seems like it these days, anyway, as the Smurf invasion continues. More and more of these blue-tinged dwarf-like characters are smurfing their way into our lives by way of advertising a certain brand of petrol, books, cuddly toys, t-shirts and even a picture strip in Look-in! They've also taken our hit parade by storm, most recently with Christ mas In Smurfland, and now they're taking a shot at our album charts with Father Abraham In Smurfland, (more about which you can read on the right and maybe win one for yourself, too!).
It doesn't stop there, either, because the Smurfs have made a full length animated film in Holland which will be released here in Britain in the new year. Father Abraham, alias Pierre Kartner has, we are told, been taking dancing lessons but it's a closely guarded secret as to why perhaps he'll be teaching the Smurfs to dance so that they can break into musicals!
It's not only the British who have taken the adorable little blue creatures to their hearts; the Smurfs have already conquered most of Europe - in fact in Germany The Smurf Song went platinum and the album has recently gone gold. In Austria both the single and the album went gold and the Smurfs are awaiting developments in Italy where their first single has just been released. And they're not going to let a little stretch of water like the Atlantic stop them either. They're planning their strategy for the invasion of the States early next year!
The Smurfs are relatively new to us, but did you know that they were born nearly thirty years ago? They were created by a Belgian artist with an English surname Pierre 'Peyo' Culliford. (He's called Peyo, by the way, because of the way his English relations pronounced his nickname Pierrot.) Peyo was at that time drawing a gang of dwarfs for a strip cartoon - but couldn't decide on a name. Legend has it that he was having a meal one evening and, in an absent-minded moment, asked someone to pass the thingummybob, meaning the salt. The Flemish equivalent of thingummybob is schtroumpf, and so that's what he called them. They grew in popularity and schtroumpf was translated into many languages - Smurf being the Dutch translation. Since that fateful day Peyo has created more than a hundred Smurfs and if you think that colouring in all those little bodies must be quite a bind, not to worry, his wife Janine does it for him.
Don't forget to keep your eyes peeled for the Smurf film next year and listen out for their conquests of other lands!

 Look-In Magazine No. 23 2 June 1979

Great smurfing inside - special feature & picture strip and The Incredible Hulk!
SMURFERNALIA!
There may have been little news on the Smurf front recently, but that doesn't mean that they've been lying down and taking things easily.
No - our little blue friends have been more than busy recently making a funny film for all to enjoy. It's called The Six Smurf Flute, and tells the story of the Smurfs historical meeting with the medieval duet Johan, a very kind knight, and his inseparable companion, Peewit.
In the movie, The Smurfs build magic flutes that make you dance as soon as you hear the music that comes from them.
One of these flutes landed in the human world, and this is the basis of the story: together with Johan and Peewit, our little friends attempt to puzzle out some plan to recoup it. The Six-Smurf Flute is set in a medieval world of villagers, good and bad lords in their castles, and wizards... all favourite heroes of the script-writer. Peyo.
Watch out for The Six-Smurf Flute in your area soon - it began its run in the East Anglian area at the end end of May.
Incidentally, the LP music from the film, recorded by the famous French composer, Michel Legrand, is available now and well worth a listen.
Other news on the Smurf front - during the summer, in Butlin's holiday camps around the country, the Smurfs are going live! There are special live shows before and after the screening of The Six-Smurf Flute. And there are also plans for pan-tomimés at the end of the year.
Sticking to the summer theme, watch out for the Wimbledon tennis finals in June-and watch out for the commemorative Tennis Smurf to be launched during that month. As you may already know, new Smurf figurines appear each month, and future ones will include an Angling Smurf, Ice-Lolly Smurf, Super Motoring Smurf (to scale with the petrol pump released in March!), King Smurf and Golfing Smurf.
Finally as you know, Smurfing Beer is the latest single release to listen out for from the tireless little blue folk. All in all, it's going to be a Smurfing Summer.

HI THERE, YOU SMURFERS! This week we've got a super crossword for you to try, sent in by Julie Peck, of Saint Helier, Jersey. We hope you all have as much fun solving it as we did.
ANYONE ELSE have any bright ideas for us? We'll always be glad to print your Smurfalised efforts when space permits.

Clues Down: 1. Subject of this crossword! 2 & 6. Magazine where Smurfs appear weekly. 3. Smurfs' records appeared on this label. 4. Country in Europe where Smurfs were created. 6:(See 2 down.) 8. Very clever Smurf. 9. Pierre The ----- 10. Smurfs all like to do this. 11. Chief of The Smurfs.
RUGBY SMURF is one of the latest additions to the family. Have you seen him yet? He thought you'd like to know that, although a similar sort of game was popular in Britain in Roman times, Rugby as such is supposed to have started in November 1823 when a boy at Rugby School picked up the ball and ran with it during a game of ordinary football. He was breaking the rules, of course, but everybody thought it was a good idea, and sat down to work out an entirely new game.
There are two types of Rugby Football today - Union and League. They differ in many respects, but are basically similar, and eagle-eyed Welsh Smurfers will notice that Rugby Smurf is wearing a red shirt just like the one worn by Welsh internationals. And in the Welsh Rugby Centenary year, too!
