Smurfette's Birthday: The Lost Treasure of the Atari 2600 & Intellivision
Imagine a game where the Smurfs embark on a treasure hunt, gathering all the necessary supplies to throw a grand birthday party for Smurfette. This is the premise of "Smurfette's Birthday," a game for both the Atari 2600 and Intellivision. However, despite being announced and promoted, it was never released for either platform.
Smurfette's Birthday Gameplay
The game's concept is simple yet appealing: a Smurf goes on a quest to locate all the items needed for the perfect birthday celebration. This involves getting clues and overcoming obstacles as you collect everything for the party. Once all the treasures are found, the gameplay climaxes with the setting of a festive birthday party table. Finally, Smurfette herself arrives to join in the fun and celebrate her special day with her Smurf friends.
The advertising flyer reads:
Join the Smurfs™ on a treasure hunt!
The whole Smurf™ village is celebrating Smurfette's™ Birthday! And you can join in the celebration. Send a Smurf™ character to seek out the right present. But watch out for unexpected troubles along the way. Start by taking your hero out of the village in a car, on a drive through the forest. Check for clues along the way. It sounds simple, but there are all kinds of dangers and difficulties in your path. Once everything needed is on the table, Smurfette™ appears and the party begins.
*Actual game screen may show variation from illustration above.
The Intellivision flyer reads, "A Coleco Video Game Cartridge for use with Intellivision Master Component and Sears Video Arcade", and the Atari 2600 flyer reads, "A Coleco Video Game Cartridge for use with the Atari© 2600 Video Computer System™ and and Sears Video Arcade".
A Dual-Platform Mystery
What makes "Smurfette's Birthday" particularly intriguing is that it was announced simultaneously for two of the biggest consoles of the early 1980s: the Atari 2600 (catalog #2661) and the Intellivision (catalog #2485).
The question remains: why was this game never released? The exact reasons are lost to time, but it's likely that the video game crash of 1983-1985 played a significant role. As the market for video games collapsed, many projects were canceled or shelved, and "Smurfette's Birthday" may have unfortunately become a casualty of this tumultuous period.
Legacy
Despite the fact that the game never got released, at least we get this nice glimpse into what could have been a fun birthday celebration for Smurfette.
This game appears almost identical to the unreleased ColecoVision game Papa Smurf's Treasure Hunt.
