Infogrames' The Smurfs Video Game
The evil wizard Gargamel has struck again! This time, he's kidnapped three (or four) of the Smurfs — Smurfette, Brainy, Jokey, and Greedy (16-bit only) — locking them away in cages scattered throughout the treacherous forest. It's up to Hefty Smurf, the brave and brawny hero, to venture beyond the safety of the Smurf Village and rescue his captured friends.
The Gameplay
The Smurfs is a classic 2D platform game, blending exploration, collection, and obstacle-dodging. Players control Hefty Smurf as he navigates a series of colorful, hazard-filled levels. Each stage is designed to test reflexes and strategy, offering a mix of challenges that keep the gameplay engaging.
The game's levels range from the familiar Smurf Village to perilous environments like swamps, volcanoes, and mines. Each area introduces unique threats — terrible plants, lethal lava, or the dreaded Bzz Fly and Black Smurfs. In the 16-bit versions, players occasionally switch to other Smurfs like Brainy, Greedy, or Jokey, each with distinct abilities that enhances the gameplay.
The controls are tight and responsive, typical of Infogrames' attention to detail, though the game's difficulty can spike in later stages. Minecart sections and timed challenges demand quick thinking, keeping players on their toes. Despite its target audience of younger players, The Smurfs doesn't shy away from offering a respectable challenge.
Bonuses
Item | Effect |
---|
Mushrooms | Reveals hidden bonuses | Raspberries | Adds one life point to health meter | Sarsaparilla | 25 Sarsaparilla leaves gives Extra Life | Smurf Doll | 1 Smurf doll gives Extra Life | Stars (16-bit) | 25 Stars gives Bonus stage | Stars (8-bit) | All Stars on level gives Bonus stage | Key | Releases trapped Smurf |
In a Bonus stage, Hefty can snag additional items to boost his health or earn extra lives. This adds a layer of reward-driven exploration, encouraging players to scour each level thoroughly.
Conclusion: A Smurftastic Gem
Infogrames' The Smurfs captures the charm and simplicity of the Smurf franchise while delivering a solid platforming experience. Hefty Smurf's quest to rescue his kidnapped companions is a classic setup that resonates with fans of the comics and animated series. The gameplay strikes a balance between accessibility and depth, making it enjoyable for both casual players and seasoned pros. Whether you're dodging Gargamel's traps or bouncing through the forest, this game proves that even the smallest heroes can leave a big impression.

The Smurfs on Nintendo 64
Initially intended for release in 2000, "The Smurfs" for the N64 was listed by Infogrames as an upcoming title for two years. However, despite being confirmed by the publisher as late as 1999, the game was ultimately never released.
It is unknown if the canceled Nintendo 64 "The Smurfs" had anything to do with "The Smurfs" published between 1993 and 1999 by Infogrames for various platforms.
Somewhere along the line, the project was shelved. Curiously, the final release date for N64 Smurfs was scheduled for 12/31/2003, a date which clearly never materialized.
Why was it canceled? By the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Nintendo 64 was nearing the end of its lifespan. The PlayStation and the upcoming GameCube were dominating the market. So it probably didn't make sense to release a new game for the console.

SUPER NES - THE SMURFS Hints, tips & tricks to play The Smurfs on SNES

Nintendo Power Volume 83 Pages 36-37
Infogrames Presents a Fast-Paced Adventure Guaranteed to Leave Smurf Fans Blue in the Face
THE SMURFS
Trouble in Smurf Village
It's a crisis never before encountered in the history of Smurfkind! The vile Gargamel made off with four of your fellow Smurfs and it's up to you to save them. Infogrames eight-meg, password-backed, Super NES adventure features fifteen long and challenging stages. While the sharp graphics and animation are fun to watch, the less-than-perfect play control might frustrate the young players this game is likely to attract.
Items
Strewn throughout the game is an assortment of goods essential for survival. Read on and learn their purposes.
Berry - Gobble up a Raspberry and recover a Life Point.
Shroom - Mushrooms conceal surprise bonus items.
Key - Keys unlock the cages holding your smurfy friends.
Leaf - Collect 25 Leaves and earn an extra life.
1-Up - Find a Smurf Doll to win an extra life.
Star - Collect 25 Stars to enter a smurfy Bonus Game.
Act 1: The Village
Your epic quest begins in Smurf Village. It's a secret Smurf mission, so you can't create a spectacle as you make your way out of town. Keeping a low profile is hard work, especially with so many accident prone Smurfs running around. Avoid the busy Smurfs and collect all the Raspberries, Stars and Sarsaparilla Leaves you find along the path.
1. Rooftop Revelry
Every door in Smurf Village is open to you, as long as you're just looking for a way up to the roof. Shoot up through the chimney to pick up any extra provisions. You'll need these items later on your long journey.
2. Garden Gallivanting
Smurf villagers are busily preparing for another bumper garden crop. Watch your step or you might get beaned by a flying dirt clod or slimed by a passing snail!
3. Time Jumps to Avoid Lumps
The Smurf villagers are busily hoisting goods into the upper stories of their abodes. If you don't watch your step, you might get bonked by a bag of junk! Hop over each burlap sack and continue on your journey.
Act 2: The Forest
A forest lies on the edge of the Smurf Village, and unfriendly folk live above and below the trees. You can find valuable items here, too. Smurfs don't weigh much, so try jumping up on a falling leaf and using it as a stepping stone. Just keep an eye out for any rotten apples waiting to fall from the trees.
1. Playing Possum
Sleeping possums keep all sorts of interesting items in their dens. You can borrow their treasures if you don't wake them from their slumber. Keep an eye out for falling apples as you wander back up to the surface.
2. Leaf Leapin'
The trick to climbing up the tallest trees in the forest is timing your leaps from leaf to leaf. Hesitate too long and you'll find yourself standing on the forest floor again.

SUPER NES - THE SMURFS Hints, tips & tricks to play The Smurfs on SNES

Nintendo Power Volume 83 Pages 38-39
Act 3: The Bridge
The crafty but klutzy Gargamel broke the bridge leading into town, which is probably a good thing or he would have smurfed more Smurfs than the four he smurfed. Ask your flying feathered friends to help you across the river, but keep in mind that the birds can't carry your weight all the way across.
1. High or Low?
If you're looking for a tough new challenge, try taking the low road to the other side of the river. Smurfs shouldn't get wet and there are a few long leaps, but you'll earn an extra life for your troubles.
2. Spring Ahead
After exploring everywhere beneath the bridge, look for a springy sprout. It can propel you high into the sky and onto the bridge deck. Brawny Smurf can pick up and move these portable trampolines when he stands on them while you're holding Down on the Control Pad.
3. 1-Up Low Down
The top prize beneath the bridge is a Smurf Doll. It might seem a little thorny getting around the wandering porcupine, but if you time your leap as the prickly pest saunters right, you can collect your doll and spring up to the exit faster than Greedy Smurf can gobble up a cake.
Act 4: The Dark Forest
This far-away forest is much wilder than the wilderness you explored near the Smurf Village, but there are more hidden Raspberries, Sarsaparilla Leaves and smurfy items to find. Take your time and plan your path as you spring across the falling foliage. When you reach the end of the Dark Forest, you'll find your friend, Jokey Smurf!
1. Watch the Leaves
Just as it was in the Forest in Act 2, the trick to getting around this wilderness is to lunge for the falling leaves. To jump higher, hold down the Y Button as you make your leap. Practice until you can spring from one falling leaf to another without letting your toes touch the forest floor. Good Smurf!
2. The 1-Up Hole
Gather up your courage and ride this falling leaf nearby to the bottom of the screen. On the right you'll see a smurf-sized hole with a Smurf Doll waiting for you inside. Impatient Smurfs that leap too soon often bump their silly blue heads on the cave opening.
3. Angry Smurf
A foolhardy Smurf wandering through the Dark Forest was stung by a Buzz Fly. Now he's hopping mad and wants to share his smurfy troubles with you. Leapfrog over the hot-head and let him walk off his bad attitude.
Act 5: The Lake
Jokey Smurf is ready to take a turn on the journey through Smurf Lake. Use his exploding Surprise Packages to decimate the obnoxious insects in his path. At least the yellow ducks aren't foul. They're happy to help you.
1. Ducky Dory
Hop on the back of a passing duck and ride on over to the next lily pad. Getting wet isn't what it's quacked up to be, so be sure to carefully time Jokey Smurf's leaps both on and off his ducky friends.
2. Berry
Ah...the Berry taste of sweet success. If you time your leaps, two ducks later you'll find a Mushroom with a Berry inside.
3. Buzzing Bees
You can jump on or step around those circling bees to pick up the items they're guarding.
It's a Storm!
The last part of Act 5 just looks scary because a storm is passing overhead. Use Jokey Smurf's packages to clear obstacles, then run to the right until you're blue in the face!

SUPER NES - THE SMURFS Hints, tips & tricks to play The Smurfs on SNES

Nintendo Power Volume 83 Pages 40-41
Act 6: The Fields
While the Fields look flat to ordinary folk, the low vegetation creates a jungle for any creatures the size of a Smurf. Work your way carefully through the thicket, and don't let a dew drop dampen your spirits.
1. Dew Drops
The leaves of the plants in the field are heavy with moisture. If you're not careful, you might find yourself soaking wet. Step aside if you see the dew begin to slide.
2. Spiders & Snakes
The lush vegetation in the Fields makes it a great home for spiders and snakes. If you watch and wait, you'll recognize a pattern for avoiding the critters.
GARGAMEL'S GAUNTLET
Holy Smurf! You've completed The Fields in Act 6, and you're not even halfway through the game! The following is an overview of future stages. We've added a few smurfy clues to get you through the toughest spots.
Act 7: The Dam
Howlibird is soaring above the leaking Dam, but you need to find a sprout or two to spring ahead in this level.
Spring Sprouts
You're going to need a smurfy spring in your step to scale this tall dam. Locate the four springy sprouts growing here and use them to hop up and over the highest walls.
Act 8: The Swamp
Brainy Smurf is on the other side of the Swamp! Leapfrog off the tops of the toads in the water and leap for the slippery strands of vines overhead.
Hang On!
It's tough to keep your grip on these slick hanging vines. Be sure to keep jumping or you'll soon be gargling in murky, green swamp water.
Act 9: The Caves
Biting bats, boulder barricades and twisting tunnels bamboozle and beguile all but the smartest Smurfs. Brainy Smurf's candles show you the way.
Have a Blast
Years ago a miner abandoned all of his explosives in the cave maze. Spring off the plunger on top of the detonators and blast the boulders blocking your path.
Act 10: The Mountains
Gargamel's Manor lies on the other side of a tall, icy mountain path. Since there's no other way around the mountain, you'd better start climbing.
Bad News Bunnies
These cute, bouncing bunnies will pounce on your blue head unless you stomp some sense between their furry ears. Time your leap and land on the hare's head while his feet are on the ground.
Act 11: The Mine
There's no gold in them that hills, but there's plenty of danger! Jump out of the way of the rolling rocks!
Switchbacks
In order to stay on track in the mines, you need to hit every switch lever you see on your rusty ride.
Act 12: The Volcano
It's a race to the top of the Volcano before it erupts. If you can beat the heat, you'll catch up to the dragon holding poor Greedy Smurf. Give him one of Jokey Smurf's surprise packages!
Act 13: The Descent
You've reached the mountain summit! It's all downhill from there. Grab your smurfy sled and get ready for a wild ride.
Act 14: The Cliffs
The only way to reach Gargamel's Manor House is by scaling the steep cliffs. Thankfully, someone left a couple of logs across the massive chasm. If you can avoid the ravens and porcupines, you might make it to the other side. Listen for the creaking sound of the log - it's your only clue that your bridge is about to start rolling.
Act 15: Gargamel's Manor House
If you can avoid Gargamel's thorns, falling books and toxic potions, you might have a chance at saving Smurfette and winning the game! It all depends on your ability to push Gargamel backwards off his roof. Perhaps Howlibird's acorns can help you.

I was disappointed that the Super NES version of The Smurfs was never released in America, but after playing it in emulation, I can see why it wasn't, even if its non-release was a disappointment. The later levels really weren't all that fun to get through.

Act 1: The Forest
Owls, caterpillars and buzz flies think Hefty is a pain in their neck of the woods. They're determined to give him a most unfriendly welcome! Be sure to get running jumps to cross the chasms.
Don't Get Stumped
Stand on the jagged portion on top of a stump and press Down on your Control Pad to drop into a hidden area with power-ups. To return to the forest floor, jump on the trampoline.
Up and at 'Em
Getting to the first hidden area requires you to backtrack. Hop up this leaf-ladder below the owl's nest and then onto the stump. Move quickly. The grumpy owl loves to pelt poky Smurfs with acorns! Squish the Mushroom next to the owl to collect a hidden Raspberry.
Get Down
Bop the caterpillar creeping on the upper level. Continue to the end of the ledge, drop off and return to the Mushroom below. Tap your A Button lightly to jump on the Mushroom and release the hidden Smurf Doll.
Act 2: River Smurf
Hop aboard a log for a wet and wild trip! Because you can't control your speed, you should concentrate on dodging the ravenous fish and the logs stuck in the current while grabbing as many power-ups as possible.
Go! Fish!
Hungry fish would love to have a Hefty snack! These aquatic enemies like to patrol the narrow gaps between the stationary logs and the river bank. Wait until they've swum away before dashing by.
Log Jammin'
That ol' river just keeps rolling along. Stay to the left in order to see what's coming up, but not too far left. If you get stuck behind a log and vanish off screen, you're history! Fortunately, you can quickly slide along a log and back into the current. You'll have to get into position to grab the Smurf Doll before it appears. If you wait until you can see it, you'll probably miss it.
Act 3: The Bridge
Heavy rains have wiped out a bridge over the river, and the few remaining sections are none too safe! You can cross partway by skipping over the timbers floating in the water, but at some point you'll have to hitch a ride with a bird!
Air Cargo
Heavier than the average Smurf, Hefty will cause a bird to sink beneath the waves if he rides too long. The trick is to hop on and off quickly. To grab the first Star, which is overhead, you'll have to make two fast jumps. Split-second timing is crucial.
Broken Bridge
Smurfy bridge is falling down, my fair Hefty! The weight of a single Smurf can poke big holes in the remaining bridge sections. To avoid an unexpected dip, hop, don't walk, when you're crossing.

Act 4: The Swamps
You don't have any bug repellent, so you'll have to rely on your smurf wits to get past the odd flora and fauna that infest this stage. Avoid that sinking feeling by taking to the vines hanging overhead. Once you're on dry land, you'll have to smurf a giant snake if you want to go farther!
Frog Hoppin'
When you run out of vines, wait until a frog raises its head above water level to say croak, then jump on. Take the frog route until you can grab another vine.
Act 5: The Sarsaparilla Fields
A low ceiling cramps your jumping style in this soggy stage. Hungry spiders are spinning webs just for you, while water dripping from the ceiling drains your energy. You can hop across gaps in your path by bouncing off falling Sarsaparilla Leaves.
Bouncing Bug
If you bide your time, you can dash past these fuzzy rascals while they're bouncing the other way. Two team up to guard the fourth Star in this stage. You may have to take a hit if you want to grab the Star.
Act 6: The Mountains
Good thing Hefty isn't afraid of heights! He'll have to work his way up this steep slope by leaping from ledge to ledge. When he's stuck, high altitude birds are more than happy to lend him a wing. He'll have to keep a smurfy eye out for falling rocks, broken bridges and angry bees!
Trick Trek
Soon after starting your ascent, you'll have to find a hidden passage on your left. You'll have to take it if you want to climb any higher. Later, you'll find two more areas hidden in the mountainside that contain valuable power-ups.

Smurf City, Here we Come!
Now that you've climbed to the top of the mountain, you're halfway to Gargamel's hideout, where he's holding the three Smurf prisoners. Just because it's downhill the rest of the way doesn't mean your journey will get any easier. It's time to screw your Smurf courage to the sticking place!
Act 7: The Flight on a Stork
Why climb all the snowy mountains when you can hitch an easy ride with a winged fiend? Hold tight and use your Control Pad to elude airborne obstacles. Your stork is more than happy to peck troubles away with his long beak.
Act 8: The Goldmine
Jump aboard a wagon for a wild underground ride. You'll have to steer by pressing the B Button when you pass over a lever.
Act 9: Inside the Volcano
You'll have to run fast to escape the hot lava licking at your smurf shows. Unfortunately, your hot-footed arrival has awakened one of Gargamel's pals, a fire-breathing baby dragon. You'll have to defeat him to win one of the keys for freeing the Smurf prisoners. Thank goodness the next stage gives you an opportunity to chill out.
Act 10: The Sledge Race
Grease your runners and hit the slopes! Gather speed by running over an S icon, then jump over the yawning chasms. If you slam into a polar bear out for a mid-winter stroll, though, you'll lose valuable momentum. You'll need to rack up some serious hang time if you want to grab all the Stars in this icy stage.
Act 11: The Cliff
Keep jumping as you edge along this log. If you're standing on the log when it rolls over, you'll find yourself on a loooong way down! Buzzing bugs in this precipitous stage would like to lunch on Hefty. Is that what they call a Blue Plate Special?
Act 12: Gargamel's Manor House
You're almost there, but don't get too cocky, O.K.? Gargamel's un-cool cat, Azrael, dogs your footsteps as you explore the house. He's just waiting for you to take a fall into his waiting claws! Drop five exploding gifts on the cruel kitty's head to turn him into litter.
Hefty's Nemeses
Gargamel has conjured up a brutal bestiary to thwart your rescue efforts. Smurfing the giant snake, baby dragon and Azrael, not to mention ol' Gargamel himself, takes more than a simple bop on the head. Fortunately, they're suckers for presents, especially the exploding kind. Will that sinister sorcerer never learn?
