What exactly is a Snork?

I have some vague memories of them from Saturday morning cartoons - I think they had pipecleaners on top of their heads, kind of a precursor to the Teletubbies and the strange little things on top of their heads...

Who made the TV show? The same people as the Smurfs? Was it on NBC? Owned by Peyo?

Snorks are basically underwater beings with snorkellike appendages on their heads, which basically gives them their name. It was created by Freddy Monnickendam in 1974 as a comic book. (I found that part out from a Snork-related website, BTW.) Generally, they were an imitation of the Smurfs, only in an ocean environment set in the modern day period of the 1980s. The Snorks are also cohabitated by both males and females, whereas the Smurfs are a little overpopulated on the male side. They are led by a very pompous mayor named Wetworth who has very little knowhow in dealing with outside threats to his community. The young Snorks include Allstar, Daffney, Junior, Tooter, and Casey, who with the help of Allstar's scientist uncle Dr. Galleo and his pet Occy explore the underwater regions and help protect their community from any outside threats. The series began on NBC in 1984 and somehow moved to USA Network, where it continued up to 1989 with new episodes, including those where the Snorks even helped humans on land.

Vic,

You know, I can't really understand how I missed this show. I have almost no memory of it all.

I've watched a few minutes of the show on Cartoon Network and it just seems kind of uninspired... I can't say it grabs me at all.

Oh well.

Hi Everyone,

The Snorks were definitely a Smurf knock-off which NBC hoped would catch on as well as the Smurfs but never did. The Snork PVC toys were also manufactured by Schleich and distributed in the U.S. by Applause/Wallace Berrie. There were also plush toys, books, videos, etc. I have the complete line of PVC figures which was very small. You can view them in the Snork portion of my website at http://mhl2.home.mindspring.com/snork.html

Michelle,

Thanks for the snorky info!

(Doesn't sound right, does it?)

I've posted a link to your fantastic website on the Links page. I thought I put a link up long ago...my apologies! Sometimes laziness gets the best of me.

Thanks again for the Snorks info!

Actually, you can add another good Snorks page to your list.

The URL is:
http://www.angelfire.com/tv/quasisp

This has pictures of some rare Snorks items available during the 80s, as well as information on a possible pilot episode produced around 1982.

Let me know what you think. :-)
