As you may of read, my question is: Why are Smurfs less popular then they should be? (Not the new movies...The orrigional ones.) Let me explain. Yes, Blue Buddies is gettin more popular with the amount of Smurfs, and yes, they are making new movies about Smurfs...But think about it for a moment...
For example: 1. With what I have seen, unless I mention the new movie, a good majority of people at school, work, etx. have no idea what I am talking about!
2. If I mention a story, or a comic, or pun that Peyo has created, people look a me like: What?
3. No one that I have talked to, knows nothing about this site!
4. I have checked thrift stores, antique shops, etx. all around the US, and have found NOTHING having to do with Smurfs, adsept for the new movies...
...I mean sure...They are well known to the internet, and Smurfs like us...But in a small town, they are little known of. Does anyone else have this problem?

The original Smurfs are probably not as well known as they should be (or used to be) in the USA because they had been off the American pop conscience for almost 25 years--between the cancellation of the original TV series (1989) and the first movie (2011). An entire generation has grown up not knowing what in smurf's name the Smurfs are. To them, the movies are their very first exposure to the Smurfs. They often express shock when they learn our little friends have been around for nearly sixty years and that there was a TV series before they were even born.
Peyo's family (the Cullifords) own the Smurfs and control how they are marketed and licensed. They are not as aggressively marketed as characters from Hasbro or Marvel; consider how many times the Transformers, My Little Pony and the Avengers have been re-imagined and rebooted in just the past decade. Studio Peyo doesn't reboot or reimagine the Smurfs every few years; they see no need to, from what I gather.
The quickest way for the original Smurfs to regain their popularity is a brand-new animated TV or web series from Sony Pictures Animation (which currently holds all the animation rights) that reintroduces the entire Smurf family to a new generation of kids. Personally, I would include the original and new characters, including Grandpa, Nanny and all four females (Smurfette, Sassette, Nanny and Vexy). But I'm not holding my breath. ![[Frown]](frown.gif)

No, they just have separate continuities: their appearances in the Johan and Peewit comic book series, their own original comic book series, the Hanna-Barbera cartoon show series, and the Sony Pictures live-action film series.

In Europe the Smurfs were very popular around 1978-1980. Especially the PVC-figures but also the comics. That was their peak.

Maybe among the youngest generations, who probably know them best from the movies than from comics and even HB cartoons. So I agree with Richrod, though I'm not quite sure about a new TV cartoon show by Sony Pictures Animation could work, unless Peyo's original humor is kept. Let's not forget this was just what HB did, being successful. My apologies to everysmurf if I'm insisting on it too much, but watching a new Smurf cartoon involving toilet humor is something that I wouldn't like to see. ![[Frown]](frown.gif)

That's the real downside of the Cullifords not marketing the Smurfs more aggressively: they risk having them become so obscure in the eyes of the public that people will wonder what those characters are supposed to be about and why they would even matter to anyone in later years. Continuing to market them as PVC figures isn't bad in of itself, but it just isn't enough to keep them in the spotlight.
