Since August I've been writing outlines and drawing storyboard sketches for several original Smurf fan stories and comics. One of them, based on an episode of the original TV series, is being fast-tracked by a very tragic event in my life today.
"Remembering Squeaky" is a sequel of sorts to the TV episode "Squeaky", an emotional and touching story about Smurfette grieving the loss of her beloved "pet mousie". The story takes place exactly one year after Squeaky died; Smurfette and her new pet mouse, a female named Little Squeaky, visit Squeaky's grave to remember and celebrate his life. Vexy, Sassette and Nanny come along for emotional support.
The story is suddenly being fast-tracked because I lost a dear loved one today. Chuck Smith, the senior pastor of my church, Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa, California, died early this morning at the age of 86 after a two-year battle with cancer. I feel like I just lost a grandparent; I've been going through the whole gamut of emotions as the shock and grief works its way though.
In my grief, I'm pouring those emotions into the story. It's my way of coping with such a tragic loss. The completed thumbnail sketches will be uploaded later tonight.

I know what you mean, Richrod. Next 17th it will make a year since my father passed away. He had developed an ischemia since a fall in the street and by then his health was never the same again. He languished until he got pneumonia and so didn't resist - he was 84.
I intend to watch your Smurf fanfic too!

Thanks for the kind words, Squeaky. The story about your namesake mousie is just about done. I need a scanner to turn them into JPEG's for uploading later today.
In text form here is a little preview of the story, as Smurfette bursts into tears over a flood of memories of her departed first pet and Nanny hugs her:
Smurfette: It's been a whole year, Nanny! WHY AM I STILL CRYING?!?
Nanny: (gently weeping) It's okay to cry, Smurfette. You loved Squeaky, and you still love him. And you miss him. It shows how much he meant to you and much you love him.
Little Squeaky nuzzles up to Smurfette to comfort her.
Vexy: Smurfette... if there's one thing I've learned from you... (sniffles) it IS okay to cry.
In a roundabout way, Nanny has been comforting me as I write this story and grieve Chuck Smith's passing.

Okay, here's the completed story in thumbnail sketch form. I drew it out in about three days total. This is how I brainstorm ideas for my professional graphics and web design work, sketching on paper with ink as soon as the idea hits me, so I apologize for its unfinished look. On the other hand, I've been complimented by other animators and artists for my looseness and mastery of line and ability to capture expressions in a cartoony form.
On this post are the first three pages:

The next three pages to follow.

And here are the last four pages, 7 through 10:

This is my first completed fan story on this site, and done while I am still grieving the death of a loved one, so it may be a bit maudlin to some people. I beg your smurfy indulgence as this is just a first draft.
Your feedback is appreciated.

Truly a touching story, Rich. And you have another sympathetic heart in me. In 2011, I lost three very close family members in the space of a few months. To have so many deaths in such rapid succession seemed like the end of the world; the funeral director said he'd never seen so much death in one family before. But Heaven has blessed me with so much since then, and these happinesses help to dispel the shadows.
I knew of Chuck Smith's radio program and am saddened to hear of his passing. But you and I can relate in a special way: we know where our friends and loved ones have gone, and the parting is only temporary. God bless, my friend.

@Photographer: Thank you for your very kind words. I began crying again when I read your post. I'm so sorry for the loss of your loved ones in such a short time, but we both know they are in a very smurfy place along with Pastor Chuck and we will be reunited with them.
If it helps to understand the story by adding voices to the characters, try to imagine the familiar voices of Katy Perry as Smurfette, Alan Cummings as Gutsy, Jonathan Winters as Papa, Julie Dees as Sassette, Fred Armisen (from Smurfs 2) as Brainy, June Foray as Nanny, and Gwen Stefani (my personal choice) as Vexy.
