I bought Season 1 Region 2 PAL UK DVD as they are much cheaper for me on shipping but am not happy about weird changes they made. Does anyone know if the PAL Region 4 are any different?
One thing I hate about the region 2 is on Season 1 they changed the music on the intro, made new digital title cards w/ crappy music and new credits. Does the R4 DVDs also have this change or did they keep the original like the WB USA ones?
Thanks.

No, the Region 4 DVDs are like this too. It must be how the PAL masters for the show are because I remember owning some of the UK VHS tapes and they also had the different openings. The digital title cards really bother me as they just look very tacky and unprofessional (half the time they even include spelling mistakes).

Thanks for the info at least I can settle for the cheaper UK DVDs. I noticed even the Hanna-Barbera logo after the credits is gone.

Anyone interested in playing the UK Smurf DVDS should read my message about NTSC and PAL here. The message is originally about playing Australian discs but it applies to UK discs as well. A much longer technical explanation about PAL / NTSC differences is found here.
It should be noted that in order to change the frame rate from NTSC to PAL, the audio is sped-up to match the newly interpolated PAL video. This results in a change in pitch from the original US audio. For the curious, this audio speed-up is also the reason movies have a shorter running time on PAL DVD releases versus the original untouched US NTSC version. When you buy a PAL modified version of a television show originally made in NTSC, you may get a higher video resolution, but you get less frames per second (flicker), notably sped-up audio and a shorter running time.
>> Buy a multi-region DVD player here to play discs from all around the world.
