WHOA! No way. You are the designer for the Smurfs characters for this film? THAT IS AWESOME!!!! I saw the midnight show last night and LOVED IT. I'm very impressed with the designs of the Smurfs to make them look real. One question, though. Why do they not have nostrils? lol
One other thing. Would it be possible to design a version of Sweepy Smurf what he would have looked like if he appeared in the movie? That is my favorite Smurf character and he only appeared in one episode. You can view it here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb9Uim-3Fz4
Thank you very much for coming on here and reaching out to us to give us insight into your work and experience. It is greatly appreciated.

The lack of nostrils, nipples and belly button are one thing, but what hasn't been asked yet is why they have no fingernails but still have nail impressions Is it a strange Smurf ritual to remove the nails when they're young?lol...

Smurfs with nipple marks? I'm not sure that's entirely appropriate without encroaching on a form of realism that borders on adult fetishism, like the obsession of making the Batman costumers in the Joel Schumacher-directed Batman movies have nipples on them.

Nipple marks? Who said anything about nipple marks? I was talking about finger nail indentations. ![[Frown]](frown.gif)

Thank you, Squeaky Smurf I did a lot more of those costume variations, too. They chose what to use based on budget and time constraints.

Crazy Smurf was written into the script by the screenwriters. Jordan Kerner and Raja loved the idea of a Smurf that was a bit like Harpo Marx or the bug-eyed comedian of the 1940's, Jerry Colonna. I came up with a few designs, they picked one and that was how Crazy Smurf was born.

In terms of all the new Smurfs for the film-Gutsy, Panicky and Crazy- Jordan or Raja would give me their name and a brief description of their personality or motivation and I would come up with their look. The three of us would refine the details and also incorporate input from LaFig.

I came up with some variations on my generic Smurf design, "Smurfy" and those were used for the Smurf crowd scenes (Smurf Village, etc.). Narrator Smurf was one of those designs with more specific costuming.
Yes, Crazy Smurf is the one who sounds the alarm! I won't say how, for those who haven't seen the movie yet.

You'll see more of the other Smurfs in the future, if they give the go ahead for another movie. During the next few weeks investors will be watching the film's box office results. If this one does well, we may see more! Go see the film as many times as you like during this time period and contribute to it's success.

Well, ClumsyRules, I'm gonna see it again with my Dad and my friend, Kimberly. She says that she wants to see it with her friend. So I'll see it again August 7. Plus since there could be sequels in the pipeline, I would like to see spin-offs such as: the Smurfs' new Christmas special on Blu-Ray. Here's a scoop on the spin-off: Director Raja Gosnell & Producer Jordan Kerner Talk SMURFS; Reveal They’re Already Writing the Sequel & the DVD Has a 22 Minute Original Christmas Movie
Earlier today, I attended a Smurfs movie presentation at Sony Studios in Culver City, California. While there I got to watch a number of clips (some were in 3D) and I watched an interesting and informative behind the scenes presentation by Sony Pictures Imageworks visual effects producer Lydia Bottegoni, visual effects supervisor Rich Hoover, director Raja Gosnell and producer Jordan Kerner. They explained the challenges of bringing Smurfs to the big screen and the technical hurdles they had to overcome. While I love learning about new movie technology, I know most of you just want to know about the footage. My quick answer is kids are going to love the movie and I thought the 3D looked great.
Shortly after the presentation ended, we went to a small conference room and we were able to conduct a small roundtable interview with director Raja Gosnell & producer Jordan Kerner. They talked about the challenges of doing a CG/live-action hybrid movie, how did they decide which Smurfs would come into our world, why NYC, how did Smurfs creator Peyo influence the movie, and why is Gutsy Smurf Scottish. In addition, they revealed they’re already writing the script for the sequel and the DVD/Blu-ray will be released this Christmas with an original 22 minute Smurfs movie with a Christmas theme. Hit the jump to watch the video.
Here’s what Kerner said about the 22-minute original movie being released on the DVD/Blu-ray:
“There’s a 22-minute original movie that we’re making right now with Image Works. It is all animated, that will come out—oh my goodness, the DVD comes out at Christmas! Imagine that. It is a Christmas-themed 22-23-minute piece that is just spectacular. One of the great conceits of it is that we enter—it’s a little bit of A Christmas Carol—we enter into the present world with the Smurfs that everyone will have known from our movie, the 3D photo-real Smurfs in a photo-real Smurfs village, the village that you all saw when you saw the film today. And then, when we go back, I don’t wanna give away too much, into Grouchy’s dream we’re now in the 2D world of the Smurfs, much more traditional in terms of what you would have originally seen in a Smurfs cartoon in that way, is a distant memory in that way, and then we go back into live-action again.”
Smurfs gets released July 29. Here’s the order of questions. Gosnell is on the right.
How do you creatively get ready to make a kids movie Why CGI/live-action? What are the challenges of hybrid films Why does Gutsy Smurf have a Scottish thing going on They reveal they’re already writing the sequel They talk about contemporizing the story and setting it in NYC How did Peyo’s original series influence the movie How did technology play into the formation of the movie. They talk about how Gollum and Avatar influenced the film Kerner is asked how does he have the time to produce movies and also be the Dean of a school Who picked the music and how does it play into the movie What extras will be on the DVD/Blu-ray. They reveal they’ve made a 22 minute new all animated movie with a Christmas theme. Comes out this Christmas They say the sequel stays in our world

Yes- if you go by the number of tickets sold this past weekend, I think we'll find that Smursf either came close to or outnumbered the attendance of C&A. There was an $800,000 C&A lead, but matinee and children's ticket prices made the profits harder to match.

How exciting to meet you ClumsyRules. I wish to congratulate you on a job well done in your Smurfs re-imagination. It will be a pleasure and a treat to enjoy the DVD extras which will without doubt include background into the creative process you employed.
I have seen some of the wire-frame drawings on the internet and I am very interested in learning more about how that translates into Smurfs seen on the movie screen.
Narrator Smurf is a novel and pleasing character so kudos for helping in bringing Narrator to life!

The Smurfs movie shall be released just tomorrow in Brazilian movie theatres, but as I was observing both trailers and teasers I have observed that Brainy Smurf seemed to me nicer and less pedantic, ClumsyRules. And he has a happier look too (Well, surely I'll see this much better when I watch it). Was it an idea to make him not so 'wise-guy'? Anyway, I liked that. He's one of my favorite Smurfs! ![[Wink]](wink.gif)
