Power Trio: Tuffy (id), Hefty (ego), Duncan McSmurf (superego)
Year Zero: Empath's 150th birthday is considered the marker for this series.

And my own personal trope...

Continuity Chop Suey: The Empath universe is
(1) the cartoon show universe up to Season 5, but adding Scruple, who originally appeared in Season 6, plus...
(2) some stories and a bunch of characters that are part of the comic book universe, plus...
(3) rewritten origins of Baby Smurf, the Smurflings, Sassette, Grandpa Smurf, Wild Smurf, and Nanny, plus...
(4) a few Smurf characters from the 2011 movie, plus...
(5) the inclusion of "The Smurfs And The Magic Flute", and last but not least...
(6) some Smurf characters of my own creation apart from Empath.

Unexplained Accent: Although there's literally no voice acting in fan fiction literature, there's still characters that speak in different accents. Clumsy assumedly speaks in a distinct Southern drawl, Painter speaks in a French accent, Miner's meant to be Scottish (originally Irish or Scotirish in the cartoon show), Tapper's is Irish, and Farmer from Maine. It's only partially explained in "Empath's Discovery Of The Book" that the Smurfs used to be of different clans that spoke different languages from each other.

By the way, Empath's accent is American, because I imagine Robert Duncan McNeil (Star Trek: Voyager's Tom Paris) speaking his parts.

Token Minority: Polaris Psyche among the Smurfs. He is, in essence, a white man in a blue man's world.

Well, it's true. When you think about it, it's like a commentary on the race issues we have today, with the Psyches possibly representing Caucasians and the Smurfs representing non-Caucasians. Perhaps even stranger is my mental casting of the character voices for Empath and Polaris -- I have Robert Duncan McNeil (Star Trek: Voyager's Lt. Tom Paris), a Caucasian, voicing a colored character (Empath), and I have Tim Russ (Lt. Tuvok), an African-American, voicing a white character (Polaris).

Good Is Not Nice: With Hefty Smurf in these stories, it's more like Good Is Not Always Nice. He has more Jerk With A Heart Of Gold tendencies when he's dealing with characters that aren't Empath or Polaris.

Attempted Assault: Of a G-rated sort in "The No Hug Zone", as a Smurf invades Tapper's Tavern, which was designated as a "No Hug Zone", to force a hug on Grouchy and was stopped by Grouchy.

Woobie, Destroyer Of Worlds: Empath in the novel getting so angry with Papa Smurf for the mess he's made of his son's life, and with most of his fellow Smurfs for what they intend to do with him, to the point where he destroys his statue, destroys his house, sets it on fire, kidnaps Baby Smurf, and intends to commit suicide with him.

Assimilation Academy: Psychelia is intended to be this with a sort of Fantasy/Sci-Fi twist.

The Atoner: Papa Smurf, for having believed to have caused the death of his son Empath as an infant...which in a sense he did, considering Empath did not come back as the same person he was when he was first placed in Psychelia. To some small degree, Empath himself for having caused the death of Polluxis during a training session and having to go through a Disney Death during Redemption Day.

Off To See The Wizard: The plot of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", with Sassette as Dorothy, Nat as the Scarecrow, Slouchy as the Tin Woodsman, and Snappy as the Cowardly Lion. Smurfette plays Glinda the Good Witch, Gargamel in drag does the Wicked Witch of the West, and Empath plays the Wizard of Oz using Papa Smurf's face and voice as the "vision".
Your Little Dismissive Diminutive: Jokey doing his impression of Gargamel in the novel: "I have you now, my pretty, and your little blue friend too!"
