| Already available | | Smurf Comic #1 |
| | Somewhere very far from here, in a little village full of mushroom houses live the Smurfs. The little Smurfs are three apples high, have blue skin, and are dressed in white pants and white caps. Yet they are a happy, easy-going bunch - - give or take one or two. |
| PAPA SMURF is the village chief. He turned 542 years old last spring. You'll recognize him by his white beard and red clothes. He's a wise old Smurf, who tries as much as he can to stop the Smurfs acting like humans. Being an experienced alchemist, he often saves the Smurfs from danger using his knowledge. | | The only Smurf to take everything seriously! BRAINY SMURF spends his time preaching to others, mumbling old quotations. Whatever Papa Smurf says is, for him, absolutely sacred. And he's a notorious tattle-tale, something that earns a regular bang of a mallet on the head. Even though his friends like him, they think he can be a real pain in the Smurf occasionally! | | No matter what you say or suggest, GROUCHY SMURF will be against it on principle. From his corner, he interrupts the other with systematically negative comments such as: "Me, I don't like..." On the face of it, you'd think he likes no one or anything. But some suspect that deep down, he has a heart of gold. | | SMURFETTE was originally created by the evil wizard Gargamel to cause trouble amongst the Smurfs. With a big nose and wild dark hair, she didn't originally look like much. Using his alchemy and knowledge, Papa Smurf transformed her into the charming Smurfette that melts the hearts of the other Smurfs. In so many ways she's one of a kind, the only female Smurf! | | As a true music fan, HARMONY SMURF just loves to play any instrument he can find. Unfortunately, the only sounds he can get out of them is deafening QUAAACKS and SCREEEEECHES - - to the horror of his companions. When he gets hold of one, even a music box plays out of key! | | JOKEY SMURF just lives for playing jokes. He offers gifts that explode in the faces of those that are silly enough to accept them. And that's just one of his countless pranks. The Smurfs get a bit mad at him, but deep down forgive him this little fault - - particularly when one of his jokes backfires. Then it's their turn to laugh at him. |

| PEYO, THE FATHER OF THE SMURFS!
A Smurf's Life
Pierre Culliford, born in Belgium June 25, 1928, was a cartoonist known as Peyo. We can consider ourselves lucky! After Peyo left school in Brussels, he looked in the paper for a job. Two caught his eye: offers for a dental assistant and an illustrator. When he presented himself to the dentist, he was told he was just 15 minutes too late! At the time, Belgium was a hothouse of comic strip artists. Peyo quickly found himself working with some of the most talented, amongst them characters such as his lifelong writing partner Yvan Delporte.
The big break. After struggling for some time, he eventually got the break he deserved when he started working for "Le Journal de Spirou." Johan and Peewit were amongst his most popular characters. But in 1958, the Smurfs made their first appearance and went on to become the world-famous characters we now know. Although most cartoon characters are known through their books before becoming TV characters, the opposite was true of the Smurfs in North America. The incredible success of the Smurf figurines led to them being adapted for television. Yet the story of their arrival at Hanna-Barbera and the success with NBC is almost worthy of a film in itself. Smurfs around the world
Despite the death of Peyo in 1992, the success of the Smurfs is truly planetary. As everyone who has worked on the series recognizes, the Smurfs are successful largely because of their basic appeal. And that appeal stretches right across the board - - from mini-tales to pop songs and on to the exciting world of multimedia. Smurf material is now available on video and DVD. The video games regularly top the sales charts. Theatre productions tour Europe. An all-new live-action film, featuring computer-generated animated Smurfs, is currently in production. Produced by Sony/Columbia, and starring Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria (Gargamel), and the voices of Jonathan Winters (Papa Smurf), Katy Perry (Smurfette), Paul Reubens (Brainy Smurf), and many others, the film is scheduled to be released in 2011.
Papercutz is proud to bring the original Smurfs comics back into print in North America. The United States has finally caught up with the rest of the world in recognizing that comics are a true art form, and that the Smurfs graphic novels are classics. Between the release of the SMURFS graphic novels and a new motion picture, the Smurfs are ready to conquer North America all over again! And that's just smurfy! |

Got my first new one since The 80's today. The Purple Smurfs. Loved the two other stories that followed.
The best part was when one smurf tried to bring Papa Smurf The Tuberose Flower to make the cure and got it wrong. He's Dimwitty Smurf and had been used before.
And if you already have the book. Look at the fourth panel on Page 23.

Thanks Rocker Smurf!
Here is the article:
by By Jamin Brophy-Warren
The Purple Smurfs | For the last few years, Terry Nantier has been obsessed with the Smurfs. Having read the books as a child, he wanted to bring some of their adventures to English-speaking kids as a comics publisher.
But with the announcement of the Smurfs movie slated for next year and starring Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria, Katy Perry, and Alan Cumming, Nantier, the the founder of NBM Publishing, finally got his wish.
The original first two Smurf tales have been published by NBM’s Papercutz division and Nantier plans to release the entire series one at a time.
Speakeasy had a talk with Nantier about the comics. |
Most people know about the television show, but it seems like the comics have been forgotten.
Terry Nantier: The Smurfs were originally introduced within another series but became so popular that they made their own books. The comics are some of the best anywhere. They have a fair amount of edge to it. They can be naughtier with each other than on the TV show and they smack each other on the noggin. They were originally in Spirou magazine — that was one of the big Belgian magazines for kids. The series of comics has sold 50 million copies and in many languages, but we hadn’t seen them in the States. When the cartoons became big, graphic novels were barely in play and there was nothing for kids. Doubleday brought a few titles but it didn’t work.
How did you get the rights?
They were with a Belgian company that represents the Peyo family. We had been wanting to have this for sometime even before the movie came around but as the movie started, it made sense to pursue them. I approached them at Frankfurt Book Fair last year with our interest. We had been trying to get the rights for years though
Most people know the Smurfs but little about their creator.
Peyo was one of the most famous cartoonists of his day. He did a number of other series — all in Spirou. The Smurfs started in a series called Johan and Peewit. They are are medieval time adventurers and one of the stories is that they happen upon the Smurfs. That’s the second book we’re publishing which was originally a Johan and Peewit story.
How many books will you publish?
There’s something like 50 albums. The plan is to do all 50 albums and we’ll bring out every single last page.

I'm currently purchasing The Purple Smurfs, as that tale I currently do not have in its English translation -- just Blaushclumpfe Und Schwarzschlumpfe (Blue Smurfs And Black Smurfs), which my sister Vicky got for me when she was in Germany more than 20 years ago.

Great article! Thanks, Rocker Smurf and Smurfy1For2. I am so happy to learn that they are planning on releasing more (if not all) Smurf Comics!!!
I would be interested to hear how the English "Purple Smurfs" book compares to the 20-year-old German version.
PS - I need to check out p.23 - you've made me curious, swarlock!
