An opening scene from the inaugural story in the series I would call "Smurfed Behind", which is adapted from the opening scene of "The Smurfs That Time Forgot":

Snappy says some lines that would probably be better spoken from the mouth of Nat Smurfling:

One of the places where "Smurfed Behind" diverges from "The Smurfs That Time Forgot", namely the season in which the stories take place:

Tuvok...I mean Polaris...gives the rundown of Empath's birthday party preparations:

Here's a basic outline of the story, so you can get an idea of where this is going:
1. Hefty leads a four-Smurf team into a region of snowy mountains to find rare herbs for Papa Smurf while Snappy goes on and on about how Empath should have been there with them instead of doing errands for Homnibus the wizard. Hefty shushes Snappy, warning him that he might cause an avalanche of snow to bury them. Brainy, of course, goes too far in trying to shush Snappy and ends up causing a big enough pile of snow to fall down upon them. After digging themselves out of the fallen snow, they discover that a baby dinosaur that's nearby has awakened from his slumber in ice. This frightens the four of them, but Snappy bravely decides to make friends with the awakened creature.
2. Meanwhile, in the village, Papa Smurf, Grandpa Smurf, and Nanny witness preparations going on for Empath's birthday party (which takes place near the end of May) when Polaris approaches them with a report of the goings-on. Polaris is particularly concerned that Smurfette is spending more time with Wild than she has with Empath in recent years since Wild became a member of the village. The elder Smurfs try to allay Polaris' fears by telling him that Empath will always have a special place in Smurfette's heart, and that no other Smurf, not even Wild, can ever take that place.
3. Which brings us to Wild being with Smurfette out in the woods with the other three Smurflings as well as Puppy and Baby Smurf when they see Snappy charging toward the village riding on the back of the dinosaur he and the other three Smurfs on the mountain have found. The six Smurfs evade the oncoming dinosaur, but it proceeds onward toward the village, wrecking whatever is in its way. Papa Smurf and Polaris confront Snappy and the creature whom he has named Crinkles, telling him that he needs to be careful with whatever new pets he happens to find. During the day, Snappy plays fetch with Crinkles, who does even more damage to the village as he is being entertained.
4. However, Snappy eventually wears out Crinkles, and despite his fellow Smurfs' best efforts, refuses to eat the food set before him. Polaris discovers that the creature is unable to eat anything except whatever plant life existed millions of years ago, and without that, Crinkles may die of malnutrition. Snappy as well as the other Smurfs fear for Crinkles' life and wonder how they are going to revive the creature. Grandpa Smurf says the only way they can revive Crinkles is to bring him back to the point of time that he came from before he was frozen in ice. And the only one who can help them do that is Father Time.
5. Father Time, fortunately, is present to listen to the Smurfs' dilemma, but because the creature is not "displaced in time", he is unable to just make Crinkles reappear in the time period he came from. However, he does offer the Smurfs a special tool that they could use to bring the creature back home to his time -- the Key of Chronos, which opens portals between time periods by way of a powerful vortex. Father Time does warn them to be careful using the Key of Chronos, to not lose either the key or the crystals that power it.
6. Papa Smurf returns to the village with the Key of Chronos and decides that he and Grandpa Smurf will undertake the journey to bring Crinkles back to the prehistoric period that he came from, and that Polaris will be in charge of the village until either they return or Empath returns from being with Homnibus. However, due to a mishandling of the Key of Chronos, the vortex opens right in the middle of the village, sucking every Smurf present into its gravity well along with Puppy, who vainly tries to keep a few Smurfs from being pulled in. Polaris also vainly tries to keep Smurfette from being pulled in as well, but fails, and just when Polaris is about to join the other Smurfs, the vortex closes up, leaving Polaris in the present time all by himself in a wrecked village.

Continuing the outline:
9. Meanwhile, Empath makes his farewells with Homnibus and flies back to the village, hoping he would arrive in time for his birthday party when he notices that his "mind's eye" powers are failing, that he could no longer fly. Dropping safely into a tree in the forest, Empath runs as fast as he could (though NOT as blindingly fast as he could have done) and arrives in the village, seeing it looking like it suffered a miniature rampage. He couldn't detect any Smurf being there. Then Polaris greets Empath and informs him that the other Smurfs have been pulled into a vortex leading back through time to bring a baby dinosaur back home. Empath decides not to worry, believing that they would return back to the present at any time, and decides to make himself breakfast, since he hasn't eaten all day. Polaris declines the offer for Empath to make him something to eat and decides to go off and meditate somewhere in the village.
8. Some time later, however, Empath is busy pacing around the village, disturbed by the fact that hours have passed since the other Smurfs have been gone for hours in their time travel and have not returned. Though without his powers being totally active, Empath senses that something went wrong and goes to Father Time's workshop to find out about the Key of Chronos. Father Time leads Empath and Polaris to a special chamber where they see multiple lines of energy streaking to a distant horizon and notices a blip jumping around on one of the lines. Father Time tells them the worst has most likely happened -- that they lost the Key of Chronos and now they are trying to align the crystals in order to open the doorway back home, but without the correct sequence it would be impossible. Empath feels disappointed hearing that there is nothing Father Time could do in order to bring the other Smurfs back home to their time period.
9. Back in the village, it is nighttime, and Empath and Polaris sit by a fire in the village square trying to figure out what to do. Empath is angry that Papa Smurf has seemingly broke his promise to never leave him again like he did when he left him in Psychelia when Empath was a baby. Polaris tries to tell Empath that this was a chance situation that they could do nothing about, and believes that they would be better off remaining in the village until the other Smurfs return, whenever that would be. Empath, on the other hand, believes that the way to bring the other Smurfs back home is waiting for them to discover somewhere out in the world, and that he is willing to venture away from the Smurf forest in order to find it.
10. The next day, Empath prepares for his journey and refuses Polaris' advice to stay where he was, since there's no telling what dangers may await them beyond the Smurf forest. Unable to convince Empath of his sound advice, Polaris decides to go along with Empath for the sake of his protection and guidance. After the both of them pack, Empath is given a special spell that would cause the entire Smurf Village to vanish so that nobody could steal anything from the village, and he casts that spell just before they head off away from the forest.
11. Empath reveals to Polaris that he had no intention of going off alone to discover the way to bring his fellow Smurfs back home. He showed Polaris a special medallion that caused a "holosmurfic" version of Papa Smurf to appear before them -- a gift Empath had given Papa Smurf a few years ago, but Papa Smurf chose not to use it due to its personality. The HoloSmurf wonders why he has been taken away from the village, and Empath and Polaris inform him of what had transpired and what they are doing now. The HoloSmurf feels glad that he now was being put to good use as a travelling companion, but Empath deactivates him before he goes on and on about his usefulness.

A summary of what happened to the characters between the time of the EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf fanfiction novel and "Smurfed Behind":
Papa Smurf -- no significant changes known as of yet, though he now has Grandpa Smurf and Nanny as people he can talk to on a somewhat equal level. Grandpa Smurf is still spoken of as having made a 500-year journey, though the actual reason for that journey is not yet known. Nanny presumably still has the same origin that she did in "Lost Smurf", being kidnapped by Castle Captive and thrust 500 years into the future (presumably) with a marsupial pet known as Smoogle (not yet shown here) as her only companion.
Empath -- no significant changes known as of yet; he still has a very close friendship with Smurfette.
Smurfette -- no significant changes known as of yet; she still has a very close friendship with Empath, though now she's seemingly developing one with Wild Smurf, whose origin about being raised in the wilderness by a family of squirrels his entire life up until he is discovered by the other Smurfs still remains, though he has no familial connection with either Papa Smurf or Empath. (By the way, the "talking Wild Smurf" comes from the European comic book adaptation of Wild Smurf's origin, where he eventually starts to speak in normal Smurf language. I decided that having Wild speak rather normally, though with a certain level of childlike naivete, is much better for him than to have him speaking like "me Tarsmurf, you Jane" or being stuck speaking in squirrel talk.)
Polaris Psyche -- no significant changes known as of yet; he seems to be sprouting a set of whiskers for someone his age (his actual age at that point is 105).
Brainy -- still the same Smurf he was, still as annoying, and knowing his familial connection with Empath hasn't really improved on his character, as is shown.
Hefty -- still doesn't think very highly of Empath, and still trying to prove that normal Smurf strength is what makes one a "true Smurf" in his eyes.
Smurflings -- still the same characters they were, despite what revelations were revealed about Sassette between then and "Smurfed Behind".
Baby Smurf -- still the same character he's been portrayed as, and still learning how to speak.

I now have the 24 pages of this tale posted on my website in the EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf Short Stories section, where you'll find it under the title "Smurfed Behind: The Departure". That's where you'll find further page installments to this tale.

In case you're wondering what's been going on since page 23:
Page 24: Papa Smurf decides to go pay Father Time a visit in order to find him and Traveler Smurf, the time-traveling Smurf from the future.
Page 25: Papa Smurf and Grandpa Smurf encounter Traveler, who tells them he is unable to transport Crinkles through time back to his own place in time.
Page 26: Father Time shows up and shows the three Smurfs gathered there his backwards-running clock where he hides a "secret treasure".
Page 27: Father Time goes into the clock to pull out the "secret treasure", the Key of Chronos, and hands it to Papa Smurf, giving him a warning about the key and its crystals.
Page 28: A mysterious shadowy figure watches from an orb Papa Smurf taking the Key of Chronos and smiles, knowing that things are proceeding according to his design.
Page 29: Back in the village, Crinkles is getting weaker, and nothing the Smurfs can do can make him better, but Papa Smurf and Grandpa show up with the Key of Chronos.
Page 30: Papa Smurf tells his little Smurfs and he and Grandpa Smurf alone will make the time trip to bring Crinkles back home, leaving Snappy to say goodbye to his dinosaur friend before they go.
