I have some regrets as not always being a loyal Smurf fan. I have watched all of the first six seasons, I don't know if I have seen all the episodes from those seasons or not because I've been downloading some episodes here and there from those seasons that I don't remember seeing.

Anyway, for some strange reason back in April of 1987 I kind of grew tired of the Smurfs I guess. Well, not so much tired of them per say as other cartoons enticed me and drew me away. In April of 1987 I discovered the Pound Puppies cartoon and got really obsessed with that. Since it was on the same time the Smurfs were on I didn't watch the Smurfs anymore. I missed the whole seventh season, didn't see one episode of that season AT ALL. Never saw an episode with Wild Smurf.

Then in fall of 1988 when the Pound Puppies went off the air I had then discovered other cartoons and just never thought to watch the Smurfs again. I did catch a few episodes from the eighth season in early 1989, but don't ever remember seeing Nanny Smurf. I never even knew of Nanny Smurf until a few years ago while looking up information on the later Smurf seasons. Still to this day I have never seen an episode of Nanny Smurf, I've seen pictures, images, and even the intro to the eighth season on YouTube with Nanny there, but not an actual episode with Nanny. I remember those few times I watched an episode from the eighth season that I wasn't into it, don't know why.

I did catch more than one episode of the ninth season where they were traveling through time because of that stupid crystal. I remember thinking to myself how stupid I thought that was and at that point I was totally done with the Smurfs, I personally thought they ruined it in the ninth season. After the Smurfs when off the air I would periodically through the next few years watch my old Smurf tapes from the earlier seasons that I had.

Looking back I don't know what I was thinking, I just wish I had kept on watching till the end. At least till the ninth season because I didn't like the ninth season very much. Seasons seven and eight look good, though. I have one episode from season seven that I watched and thought was good and one from season eight that I haven't watched yet.

I know this all may sound ridiculous but it is what I have been thinking these last few years as I've been getting very nostalgic about The Smurfs. I also regret not having any of the posters, stuffed plushes, and figures that I always used to have. Dang. At least I know I can get them again from Ebay.

Anyone have any similar regrets to mine? Dang, I really need to get my hands on episodes from seasons seven and eight, don't care too much about nine until I have seen all the other episodes from the other seasons that I missed.

Given that I was in the middle of creating the first EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf story -- the novel that introduces the character -- as far back as the late 1980s, I started to withdraw from the Smurfs in 1987 when they introduced Wild Smurf, who essentially would have been an alternate for Empath given his particular origin story. (The departure ended up becoming complete in 1989 with the "time travel episodes" season.) I personally don't think I had or have any regrets walking out on them then and later coming back to them in 1992, which was when I started writing my EMPATH novel again, though setting it in an alternate history where, at the point the story takes place, Grandpa Smurf, Nanny Smurf, and Smoogle haven't yet appeared, and the Smurflings' origin is more based on the legend of Peter Pan.

Oh wow, you pretty much stopped about the same time I did. Actually you held out a little longer than I did if you said you started to withdraw AFTER they introduced Wild Smurf. I withdrew in the spring of 1987 which was before the sixth season ended.

Cool, you have been at the Empath story for a long time, twenty years. Good to see you stuck with it. So, how come in your version you changed the origin of the Smurflings and didn't have Grandpa and Nanny Smurf? Just curious.

I can kind of understand why you wouldn't want Wild Smurf, but I really can't judge since I still have yet to see an episode of him. I think Grandpa was a good character, though, and I like the idea of Nanny Smurf. Although, I think Nanny should have been introduced much earlier on if they were going to have a Nanny Smurf at all.

If they can come out with all of these episodes on to DVD season box sets I can watch all I missed and make up for it, only twenty years later. Heh. [Smile]

In one version of the EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf novel script from the late 1980s, Grandpa Smurf did appear as a sort of voice of reason for Papa Smurf in regards to what he did with Empath, leaving him in Psychelia all those years, and also helped in the resolution of Empath's dilemma of wanting to commit suicide. And Empath did remember three of the Smurflings as being adult Smurfs, keeping the original origin story of them intact. Nanny didn't yet appear at the time to merit any sort of inclusion.

Suicide? Whoa, your stuff must be deep. The same with Raven Child. Whatever floats your boat, though. I for one like to keep the Smurfs stories light hearted and feel good stories, but that's me. [Smile]

The short stories is where I try to go for the lighter tone, although admittedly "Papa Smurf & Mama Smurfette" strikes me as the least funniest EMPATH short story I have ever written. Then again, how can one write humor into a story that basically deals with a relationship that borders on incest, even though it is actually an alternate timeline story? It's hard enough trying to keep the story from sounding too graphic and explicit.
