I've been thinking this lately and have thought of this several times in the last few years. How cool would it be to have a new Smurfs cartoon showing the next generation of the Smurfs living today in modern times? There would be a whole new generation of new Smurfs and maybe even some of the original smurf characters at a very old age since they live for 700+ years or so. I don't know when during the Middle Ages the Smurfs actually take place, but if it was during the late Middle Ages than I guess it's possible for all the original smurfs to still be living today in 2007. They obviously would be elderly like Grampa Smurf. Papa Smurf and Grampa Smurf would be long gone by now, however.
I'm a huge Star Trek: The Next Generation fan and part of the idea comes from that concept behind that show (a new generation of people in Star Fleet). Both that and the fact that I was always wondering what it would be like to have the Smurfs take place in modern times. I think it would be cool.
I have briefly looked at Raven Child's How Things Smurf fan fic and that has made me think of this even more as of late. I haven't read the whole thing yet, just skimmed through certain parts, but plan on reading the whole thing eventually. It was weird seeing Brainy as the next Papa Smurf. I will save more of what I have to say about that for another time.
What does everyone else think? Wouldn't a new generation of Smurfs in modern times be totally cool? Imagine Smurfs taking a trip to America in a few episodes or something.

I've been toying with the idea of a second generation of Smurfs, though having them be less than 200 years since the first recorded generation's stories took place, being set in the EMPATH: The Luckest Smurf universe of stories. In that particular history, Empath is not only married to Smurfette, but he also fathers a daughter through her who has his "third eye" powers, and in the story I'm thinking of writing, the daughter is now grown up, in complete control of those powers, and now wants to prove herself to be a hero while her father is now the leader of the village and his half-brother Brainy his second-in-command.

That sounds like a very fascinating story line, Vic. Almost 200 years later the Smurfs must be almost middle aged by then. Papa Smurf is probably in the state that Grandpa Smurf was in if he's still around if you know what I mean.
I notice you referred to Brainy as Empath's half-brother. Raven Child used the same terminology between Hefty and Brainy in her fanfic, except it was brothers not half-brothers. Are all the smurfs considered siblings to one another? I never heard of such things in the show, they always refer to one another as friends in the cartoon.

In the EMPATH story series, Empath and Brainy both had the same mother, but Papa Smurf was only a father to Empath, while a friend of Papa Smurf was Brainy's father. (The incident with Empath being taken by the Psyche Master as an infant and presumed dead caused the falling out between Papa Smurf and Empath's mother that resulted in her having Brainy through Papa Smurf's friend and fellow Smurf.) The other Smurfs were sons of Papa Smurf's other fellow Smurfs, with a good deal of them being siblings, such as Handy and Hefty.

Wow, again your story line is pretty deep and sounds serious. I think it's cool for you and good ideas, but a bit much for me to take in. No offense. I'm still fascinated, however. These are the only new Smurf stories we have these days.

Hey Shane, the term 'brother' I use in my fanfic is mostly referred to is a clan, a family of smurfs that grew up together and are of simlular age. In some episodes they prove that the Smurfs have birthdays on different dates because every other season they've celabrated Papa Smurf, Baby, and even Grouchie's birthday. So I'm guessing the entire clan of smurfs (save for Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Sassette, and Baby Smurf) are withing 5 to 10 (maybe even 20) years from each other. In human terms that would be 1 to 5 year life span apart.
Hope that helps. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)
