Smurf Play & Learn - ColecoVision

Smurf Play & Learn

"Smurf Play & Learn" is an educational game intended for the ColecoVision console featuring the Smurfs. Catalog #2444.

The game is designed to focus on basic learning tasks like addition and subtraction, aimed at younger players. However, it never progressed beyond the planning stages and remains an unreleased title in the ColecoVision library.

The catalog description reads:

This educational cartridge with Smurf™ characters bring basic learning concepts to the screen and encourages children to solve the problems and situations. Their zany antics make learning fun!

Development and Cancelation

Coleco advertised "Smurf Play & Learn" in promotional literature during the early 1980s, riding the wave of the Smurf franchise's popularity. Preliminary artwork was created, suggesting some initial effort. However, the game was never fully developed or released.

Gameplay Concept

Though no official version exists, the concept for "Smurf Play & Learn" apparently involves players solving educational challenges to guide Smurfs back to their village, away from Gargamel's Castle. It is meant to blend the familiar Smurf universe with learning activities, distinguishing it from the action-oriented "Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle" or the creative "Smurf Paint & Play Workshop", both of which were released.

Availability

Since "Smurf Play & Learn" was never made, it could never be bought or played. No cartridges, prototypes, or ROMs are known to exist.

Legacy

The non-release of "Smurf Play & Learn" highlights the challenges of the early video game industry, where ambitious ideas often fell victim to shifting market conditions or corporate vicissitudes.

A similarly titled game did eventually make it out the door, however: The Smurfs Learn and Play for the Nintendo Switch. "Learn and Play" is an fun educational game just like "Play & Learn" was meant to be. Although 41 years is a long time to wait, Nintendo's "Learn and Play" was worth it!

Trivia

This game features the same Coleco catalog number (#2444) as another unreleased ColecoVision Smurf game, Papa Smurf's Treasure Hunt.

Coleco refers to their Kid Vid series of games as Play 'N Learn cartridges.

The Smurfs: Play & Learn game for ColecoVision (the original idea) was loosely based on that of Mattel's similar games for the Intellivision based on the 1970s version of The Electric Company.
