Smurf Rescue
Smurf Rescue, released in 1984 by Netherlands' Courbois Software, is a video game adaptation of the 1982 ColecoVision title Smurf Rescue in Gargamel’s Castle. The game tasks players with controlling a Smurf to rescue Smurfette from Gargamel’s castle, navigating a series of platforming challenges. Smurf Rescue for the Commodore 64 follows the original’s premise of traversing hazardous terrain.
Slow Going
The graphics of Smurf Rescue are very similar to the ColecoVision version, and the gameplay is similar as well - although the game is very slow. Smurf Rescue by Courbois Software is written in BASIC and was not compiled - which means it runs very slowly. If the game was ever compiled, it would most likely be as speedy - or faster - than the ColecoVision version it was based on.
Smurf Rescue without the Rescue
The game is unfinished, as well - it ends just after the spider stage. You never actually get to rescue Smurfette.
Conclusion
A very nice, but incomplete, attempt at a Commodore 64 conversion of Smurf Rescue in Gargamel's Castle for the ColecoVision.
The game was followed by a sequel, Smurf 2: The Revenge, in 1985.
