 The Smurfs Cross Stitch
Cross stitch is a form of counted-thread embroidery that uses X-shaped stitches on fabric to create a picture. It is one of the easiest forms of hand embroidery to learn and can be used to create traditional or modern designs... including Smurf designs!

Beginner's Guide to Cross Stitch (The World of Cross Stitching Magazine)
Follow a pattern chart or create your own smurfy design!
I enjoy doing cross-stitch and here are some tips that I've picked up along the way - some cross-stitch hints for beginners!
Simple Cross Stitch Instructions / Hints:
* Try to keep an even tension for each stitch (letting the floss rest upon the fabric). Do not pull the fabric threads out of shape with stitches that are pulled too tight.
* Be sure to have all of the stitches cross in the same direction. The top stitch should run from the upper left corner to the bottom right corner of the square.
* It is important to fix mistakes if it will mess up your chart. Carefully remove all incorrect stitches. If the floss is damaged, it is better to restitch with new floss. It's worth the extra effort for the best results.
* Minor mistakes may be left in place if they will not be noticeable in the overall design. Don't sweat the small stuff!
* When ending threads, run the thread under at least 3 or 4 stitches. No knots are needed in cross stitch. This keeps your design tidy on the backside!
* HAVE FUN & ENJOY IT!

Free Hefty Smurf Cross-Stitch Chart
Hefty Smurf lifts his dumbbell weights...to show off his strength and heart-shaped tattoo!
FREE Hefty Smurf Cross Stitch Chart
Things you will need for this project:
Fabric: Aida or Evenweave. These fabrics are woven with an evenly-spaced grid of holes for you to use to make your cross stitches. They come in various counts. The 14-count aida is the most popular cross stitch fabric (it has 14 holes to the inch).
Thread / Embroidery Floss: Colors of Black, White, Gray, Blue and Red.
Needle: Blunt Tapestry Needle. A blunt tapestry needle works best for cross stitch. The point is blunt, the eye is large, and the size used depends on the fabric count. It is the most comfortable needle for passing back and forth through the holes in the aida. Use a "size 24" for 14-count aida and a "size 26" for 16- and 18-count aida or 28-count evenweave.
Other Equipment: Embroidery Scissors & Wooden Hoop. Use embroidery scissors to cleanly cut off the thread ends. These small scissors have very sharp points and do a wonderful job. You may also need a wooden hoop to hold your fabric taut while you stitch. You can use a ziploc bag to keep the materials for your project together.
