Tales of Johan & Peewit
The Smurfs global license holder IMPS has announced it is rebranding as Peyo Company after the pen name of Belgian comic book artist Peyo, who created the iconic little blue creatures in the late 1950s.
The company also revealed it is embarking on a new strategy to expand The Smurfs franchise and revive other original creations from Peyo’s ‘Johan & Peewit’ and ‘Benny Breakiron’ comic books.
Set against the backdrop of Medieval Europe, the Johan & Peewit comic strip series was first published in 1946, and eventually generated 13 separate albums.
Peyo first introduced the Smurfs in a Johan & Peewit story called The Smurfs & the Magic Flute in 1958. Readers loved the characters so much that Peyo decided to create a spin-off dedicated to their adventures.
Benny Breakiron (Benoît Brisefer) was launched in 1960, about revolves around an outwardly normal little boy with secret superhuman strength.
IMPS announced its name change and expansion plans at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival’s MIFA market on Tuesday.
The company was founded in 1984 by Peyo’s daughter Véronique Culliford, to promote and preserve her father’s work and legacy. Under her watch, The Smurfs has become one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time.
“It’s been an honor to be able to build such a success out of the blue characters my father created,” said Culliford.
“And now I hope we will do the same for some of his other creations, ‘Johan & Peewit’ and ‘Benny Breakiron’. To underline our engagement to expand his legacy beyond the Smurfs, we are renaming IMPS as The Peyo Company,” she continued.
“It’s a well-deserved tribute to my father, and features his signature, with which he signed thousands of drawings, as our new logo. Peyo was a storyteller, and so is Peyo Company. The renamed company will tell new stories inspired by Peyo’s creations with a touch of modernity that will resonate with new generations.”
The new strategy will kick off with two TV series project: The Tales of Johan & Peewit and Benny Breakiron for which the company is currently seeking partners.
IMPS/Peyo Company also gave an update on upcoming projects inspired by The Smurfs IP.

New Johan & Peewit
Set to debut in 2027, Tales of Johan & Peewit will adapt the story “The Secret of the Salamander” throughout its first season. The Peyo Company unveiled a piece of concept art for the series.

Fun Fact:
The names of Johan and Peewit's animals are Bayard and Biquette. Johan rides a white horse named Bayard. Peewit rides around on his beloved goat named Biquette.

The early history of Johan & Peewit...
Pierre "Peyo" Culliford always dreamed of being a cartoonist. It was at age 17 that Peyo was hired as a colorist and started work on Le Cadeau à la fée, a tale about elves wearing flowers for hats. This was his start into the world of comics. Although he faced many rejections early on, Peyo worked steadily to make comics his calling. Every month, despite the fact they were rarely acknowledged, he mailed off drawings and proposals. He had a couple of modest triumphs, appearing in Riquet and Le Petit Monde. He also got small gags in a couple of newspapers. It was after World War 2 that Peyo's character "Johan" was introduced to everyone.
In 1946, in the daily La Dernière Heure, Peyo published four frames entitled Johan, le Petit Page. Johan was a young and chivalrous teen from the Middle Ages. It is interesting to note that Johan originally had light blond hair (shown below), not the dark hair he is portrayed with now.

Between 1952 and 1954, Peyo worked on the story of Johan when he was with Spirou magazine, eventually creating the "Johan et Pirlouit" series. Using sword-and sorcery tropes he had always loved, he created a universe of loyal servants and royal bosses. Johan's blond hair turned black and, in addition to minstrels and magicians, he gained a sidekick. This was a gluttonous, maladroit dwarf by the name of "Pirlouit" (known as "Peewit" in English markets). Pirlouit would remain one of Peyo's all-time favorite character creations.
Then, in 1958, Peyo made history. As part of Johan's ninth adventure, La Flute à six trous (The Flute with Six Holes), Peyo had Peewit discover a magic flute made by "les Schtroumpfs" - the little blue buddies we know as the Smurfs!

The Smurfs and the Magic Flute Books
The fun adventure story of "The Smurfs and the Magic Flute" featuring Johan and Peewit was published in English as a comic book by Hodder & Stoughton, Random House and Papercutz.
There are more stories about Johan & Peewit published in languages other than English. There are many books in the French series "Johan & Pirlouit" published by Dupuis, Le Lombard, and Golden Creek Studio.
In addition to The Smurfs with the Magic Flute graphic novel, the publisher Papercutz also released never before seen in English adventures of Johan & Peewit. In addition to all of the Smurf stories, fun adventures of the duo were included in the The Smurf Tales #1, #4, #6, #8 and #10. Johan & Peewit also feature in the The Smurfs & Friends #1 and #2.
* The Smurfs Tales #1 - There’s plenty of medieval action and adventure from the king’s page (and loyal ally to the Smurfs) Johan his silly sidekick, the mischievous jester Peewit, as they go off on an adventure featuring Papa Smurf.

Johan, more formally known as Sir Johan, is a royal page to the King. Johan is young, handsome and courageous. Peewit is his friend and sidekick, who is mischievous, funny, sometimes unreliable yet ultimately helpful and loyal. Peewit is known for his mandolin playing and terrible singing voice.
