Here is my EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf adaptation of the 1980s cartoon show episode "All Creatures Great And Smurf". Enjoy!

Chapter 1
One day Empath was taking a walk out into the forest with Tapper and the Smurflings, enjoying the bright sunny day and the peaceful scenery. "Smurfabunga! It sure is nice to be smurfing out here without having to worry about Gargamel and Azrael all the time," Snappy said. "It is indeed a rare blessing from the Almighty, my fellow Snappy, though I do worry about where Gargamel is headed with his eternal destiny at smurf," Tapper said. "Why are you so worried about that, Tapper?" Slouchy asked, sounding curious. "Isn't he the enemy of the Smurfs and deserves whatever he gets smurfed upon him for smurfing that?" "Truth to tell, Slouchy, we all deserve the worst from the Almighty because we were all born as sinners in the world," Tapper said. "None of us deserve the grace that He so freely smurfs to us and all creation in the sacrifice of His only begotten Son." "You believe that this human named Jesus died for everyone on this planet, Tapper?" Sassette asked. "Jesus died for the sins of the world, not just for the sins of humans, Sassette," Tapper said. "When the first man the Almighty had created smurfed into sin, all of the world was affected by it, including all the animals that He had smurfed man to have dominion over. That's the reason that there's constant wars and fighting in this world, even among the creatures that were created to honor and worship the Almighty in everything that they do." "But if this Jesus died for all the sins of the world, why is there still all this death and fighting that smurfs on in it, Tapper?" Nat asked. "Because we still live in a fallen world, my fellow Nat," Tapper said. "Not everyone will believe that there is a single God that exists and that truly cares for them like a father does his child. Sadly, many will die before they would ever admit that they need the Almighty in their lives, and for that they will suffer greatly and needlessly for all eternity." "That seems pretty harsh for the Almighty to make people suffer for all eternity for not believing in Him, Tapper," Sassette said. "As the Good Book says, my dear Sassette, He doesn't delight in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked should turn from his way and live," Tapper said. "He doesn't want to make people suffer for all eternity, but He has to make sure that justice is met and that all sins have been paid for...whether it's with the blood of His Son or through the everlasting fire that never smurfs out." "Nevertheless, it's great that you can put aside working in your tavern for one day of the week so you can relax and enjoy yourself, though the other Smurfs may not like you doing that on a regular basis, Tapper," Empath said. "It's all part of the Almighty's commandment, my fellow Empath, that for six days I shall smurf my work, but on the seventh day I shall rest and smurf no work, for it is a Sabbath unto Him that shall be honored for all generations," Tapper said. "Well, I can't smurf of a better place to rest than to smurf out here on a day like this, Tapper," Nat said, sounding like he was in agreement. Suddenly the six of them could hear the sound of a kitten crying pitifully for help. "Great Smurfiny Crickets! It sounds like a kitten is in desperate need of a rescue!" Tapper said. "A kitten in the forest? Papa Smurf warned us that cats are very dangerous to Smurfs, Tapper," Snappy said. "It's just a kitten, Snap," Slouchy said. "What harm could a kitten do to any of us?" "We might as well go and smurf if we can rescue the kitten from whatever it is he's so afraid of," Sassette said. "This smurf agrees with you, Sassette," Empath said. "This smurf will direct us to the exact location of where the cry is coming from." And so the five Smurfs followed Empath as he led them toward the sound of the kitten, until they stopped at a tree where they saw the kitten was perched high on a branch that he couldn't get down from. "This doesn't look like much of a problem, my fellow Smurfs," Empath said as he saw the kitten on the branch, looking rather fearful. "Let this smurf handle trying to bring him down from the tree, and then we can try finding where it is that he came from." "May the luck of the Smurfish be with you, Empath," Tapper said as he watched Empath leap into the air and hover near the branch where the kitten was perched. The kitten backed away somewhat fearfully, not liking having a mouse-sized creature being able to fly near him. "Don't be afraid, little one," Empath said soothingly. "Everything will be all right. You're with friends who will help you find where it is you came from and will help you return home." The kitten cautiously looked at Empath and saw that he was no threat. Empath then used his minds-eye abilities to lift the cat gently off the branch and lower him down to the ground next to the other five Smurfs. The kitten mewed gratefully for his rescue, playfully licking Tapper's face. "I'm pleased to smurf you as well, my furry little friend," Tapper said with a laugh. "Now we just need to find your home and see if there's anybody that will come smurfing for you." "It's too bad Azrael can't be anything like this kitten, Tapper," Sassette said as she watched the kitten roll around on the ground, looking happy again. "I know how you feel, Sassette, but that doesn't mean that we should stop caring for all creatures just because some of them may smurf to be dangerous to us," Tapper said. "Tapper is correct, Sassette," Empath said as soon as he joined them on the ground. "Whatever made Azrael become the creature that he was toward the Smurfs, we can't assume that all cats will become like him when they grow from being kittens, even though cats are helpful to humans because they can help get rid of mice." "And it doesn't please me in the slightest that cats may smurf us as being nothing more than mice, my fellow Empath, but I would gladly smurf my life to save a creature like Azrael, as I'm sure that young Nat here would smurf the same," Tapper said. "This smurf senses that you have a story to tell about a time that you had to rescue Azrael despite what your fellow Smurfs felt of him, Tapper," Empath said. "Indeed I have, Empath," Tapper said. "This smurfed place a few years before you returned home for good, and some of the details of this story were smurfed from Narrator, who I will never know how he even smurfs them, but for the sake of smurfing you the complete story, here is how it happened."
As Tapper began his story, Empath saw in his recollections the Smurfs enjoying a day in the forest by the riverside, swimming, eating, resting, or just having fun in their own personal way. A few Smurfs were using a rope strung out over the river to leap into the water while Lazy was sleeping out on a raft. "Hey, the water's great," Hefty said as soon as he leaped into the river. "You Smurfs should come in and enjoy yourselves." "Brrrr...it's a little too cold for me," Sickly said as he stuck a toe into the water while standing by the shore and then quickly pulled it out. "And I'm too afraid to smurf into the water," Scaredy said, standing next to Sickly and looking deathly afraid. "Oh, don't be such a couple of scaredy-smurfs," Hefty said. "A little water from the river's not going to smurf you." "Watch out, here I smurf," Clumsy said as he let go of the rope and fell into the water, spraying Sickly, Scaredy, and Grouchy as he landed. "I hate being smurfing wet," Grouchy said. "Well, it's just too bad that I have to be smurfing my glasses when I'm swimming because I can't smurf a thing without them," Brainy said as he briefly removed his glasses to shake the water off them before putting them back on. "You can always have Smithy smurf you a pair of goggles so you won't have to worry about smurfing your glasses wet, Brainy," Smurfette suggested. "Oh, please, Smurfette, I have much more dignity than that I should be smurfing anywhere smurfing a pair of silly goggles over my eyes," Brainy said. "You see how Orbit is, always having to smurf those shades over his eyes because he can't smurf out into the sunlight without them." "Golly, I think Orbit looks real smurfy with those glasses of his," Clumsy said. "I think that you should try smurfing them on one of these days." "Absosmurfly not, Clumsy Smurf," Brainy said. "Besides, I would rather be seen with my style of glasses rather than his, because it makes me look just as wise, brilliant, insightful, and intelligent as I really am around my fellow Smurfs." "Well, smurf yourself, Brainy," Clumsy said. Hefty saw that Tapper, although dressed in summer clothes, was busy working on fixing the wings of a grasshopper. "Hey, Tapper Smurf, aren't you going to smurf in?" Hefty asked. "Aye, I'll be joining you just as soon as I finish smurfing the kink out of Mrs. Hopper's wing, my fellow Hefty," Tapper said with a friendly smile. "Well, you'd better hurry up, Tapper Smurf," Brainy said. "You know how upset Greedy will be when anybody's late for..." "Oh, Brainy, you know how Tapper Smurf is, especially when it's his day off from smurfing in the tavern," Smurfette said. "Yeah, Tapper will be smurfing here all night if it smurfed that long just to fix the wing of a grasshopper," Hefty said. "They're creatures of the Almighty, my fellow Brainy, and I would be remiss if I should let even a sparrow smurf from the nest without smurfing something about it," Tapper said. He then turned to the grasshopper that he was tending. "There you go, Mrs. Hopper...you should be smurfing all better in no time at all." The grasshopper looked gratefully at Tapper before hopping away. "Come on, Tapper, it's smurfing late," Brainy said as he also watched the grasshopper hopping away. "Hold your horseflies, laddie, and let the dear boy smurf to his business first," Duncan McSmurf said before turning to Tapper. "You're not going to smurf in here wearing that tank top, are you?" "You know me, my fellow Duncan, that though I'm not afraid to smurf myself in public, I would rather not be smurfed even on a sunny day without a vest or a tank top," Tapper said as he headed toward the water to join his friends. Then suddenly a bluejay appeared before Tapper to tell him something important. "What's that...one of your babies smurfed out of the nest?" Tapper responded. "Ah, michty me, here we smurf again," Duncan said with a shrug. The bluejay continued to speak to Tapper in a language that he understood. "You mean the tree that is near Gargamel's castle?" Tapper responded. "Gargamel?!?" some of his fellow Smurfs said in unison. "Great Smurfiny Crickets, my fellow Smurfs, this sound very urgent," Tapper said. "Tell Papa Smurf that I will be smurfing late for lunch. I have to go save this bluejay's baby before it's too late." "Just you wait, Tapper, when Papa Smurf hears that you're off on another mission of mercy," Brainy scolded as he and the other Smurfs watched Tapper go off into the forest. "He's going to..." "Oh, Brainy, you know that Tapper wouldn't be able to smurf with himself if he didn't help that baby bird," Smurfette said. Then suddenly they heard a growling noise that came from the forest. "Wh-wh-wh-wh-what was that?!?" Brainy asked fearfully as he leaped into Smurfette's arms. "I have no clue what it is, Brainy, but I will make sure that it doesn't smurf anywhere near here," Duncan McSmurf said as he climbed out of the water to go into the forest, with the other Smurfs watching him. "I don't know who I should be calling Gutsy in this situation...either him or his friend Tapper smurfing off to save a baby bird near Gargamel's castle," Hefty said as he watched Duncan go into the forest. "You're sounding like you're jealous of them for smurfing that, Hefty Smurf," Smurfette said. "I'm not jealous of either of them, Smurfette," Hefty said. "I think Tapper is silly for smurfing his faith in this imaginary God of his, and you know how I feel about Gutsy, that he's just a big showoff. They want to smurf something silly that smurfs them and the village into any danger, I'm not just going to smurf by and watch them." "I think the both of them are very brave for what they smurf, Hefty," Smurfette said. "You could learn something from Tapper and Duncan, if you're only willing to smurf them a chance." "The only thing either of them could teach me, Smurfette, is that I'm much better off being me instead of them," Hefty said.
Empath watched as Tapper followed the bluejay to the tree near Gargamel's castle where he saw the baby bird on the ground and another bluejay, its other parent, flying overhead. They told Tapper in bird language exactly what had happened. "You don't say?" Tapper said as he continued to listen to the other bluejay parent. "Well, it's rather unfortunate this had to happen, but that's how cats will be. Now let's smurf a look at you, my little bluejay." He went over to pick up the baby bird and carry it with him back to the nest that it fell out of. "You're going to be fine, just fine." Tapper then climbed up the tree with the baby bird clinging onto his back. "Hold on, Tweeter...I'll smurf you back home in a minute," he said encouragingly. Soon he was up on the branch where the bird's nest was, where he gently placed the baby bird inside. The babies looked at Tapper all happy and grateful for what he had done. The mother bluejay arrived with a worm in its beak, seeming to invite Tapper to stay for a meal. "Oh, I would be delighted, but I'm expected to smurf back home for dinner," Tapper said. "Tapper, I need you to help me smurf this bear," Duncan McSmurf's voice called out from within the forest. "Great Smurfiny Crickets, it seems that Duncan has found another creature in need of my help," Tapper said, carefully jumping down from the tree branch.
"Meanwhile, Gargamel has been busy smurfing something while he was away from his castle during the day, and we wouldn't know what it is until later, but Narrator knew that Azrael would be the first to find out around nightfall," Tapper said to Empath as he continued his story. Empath then watched as Azrael laid himself down to rest before the roaring fire in the evil wizard's hearth when he heard growling outside and the voice of his master calling, "Azrael, where are you?" Azrael arose from the rug he was going to lie on and looked toward the door that was now open. He cringed in fear as he saw that his master had brought him a ferocious beast that was tied to a leash that the evil wizard was carrying to keep it back. "Come out here, you sniveling cat...I have brought you a friend," Gargamel said with a malicious laugh as he allowed the creature to enter into the house, with Azrael backing fearfully away, not wishing for the creature to come any closer. But the creature did come closer, and Azrael leaped up to the mantel on the hearth and then onto the chandelier for safety, out of the creature's reach. "Good grief, Azrael, don't be such a coward," Gargamel said in a mocking tone. "If you weren't so stupid, you'd know that this fine specimen of a silver-fanged growler just wants to be friendly." Azrael shook his head and backed himself away from looking down at the silver-fanged growler that was viciously growling at him. "You might as well come down from there, Azrael," Gargamel said, sounding like he was at the end of his patience with his cat. "You two are going to be working together." Azrael meowed what sounded like a total refusal.
Out in the forest, Empath watched Tapper and Duncan handling a bear that had something stuck in his teeth that Duncan pulled with all his might to get out, while Tapper stood by the bear's side to offer some comfort. "Hold on there...I almost got it," Duncan said as he pulled out what appeared to be a small fish bone. He landed on the bear's belly just as soon as he pulled it out. "There you are, my tall furry friend," Tapper said. "Your agony should be over right about now." "Who figures that this fish bone would be smurfing you all this grief?" Duncan said, holding up what he had pulled out. "If I were you, I'd be smurfing to a diet of berries for a change." "Now, now, my fellow Duncan, you know that fish is part of a bear's diet, even if it's not part of ours," Tapper said. He then turned to the bear. "You are such a brave creature to endure something this small and painful." "Well, if you don't need me around for anything more, I'll be smurfing for you back in the village," Duncan said as he hopped off the bear's belly and headed back toward the village. Tapper noticed that the sky is getting dark. "I fancy that I'd better be joining my friend if I'm going to be smurfing dinner," Tapper said to the bear. "Just smurf it easy and don't be smurfing any fish for a while until your mouth heals." The bear nodded as he watched Tapper head off in the same direction as Duncan.
Sometime later back in the Smurf Village, the Smurfs were enjoying themselves with a dinner and a dance around the fire to celebrate the end of another perfect sunny day. Papa Smurf was sitting at the table with Duncan, Smurfette, and Baby Smurf talking to Greedy. "Thank you for the delicious smurfberry pie, Greedy," Papa Smurf said. "It was the best one you have ever made." "Aye, it was so satisfying, I couldn't even ask for more," Duncan said as he finished off his glass of root beer and wiped the foam from his mouth. "I hope you saved a slice for Tapper Smurf," Smurfette said to Greedy. "Well...not exactly, Smurfette," Greedy said as he let out a burp. "Oh, that's okay, my fellow Greedy," Tapper said as soon as he arrived. "I'm sorry that I'm late, Papa Smurf, but between the grasshoppers, the birds, the bear, and the bunny, it's been another full day." "You must be hungry, Tapper," Papa Smurf said, sounding concerned. "You have missed both lunch and dinner." "Oh, it was worth it, Papa Smurf, just as long as the little lost bunny has smurfed his lesson," Tapper said as he picked up Baby Smurf and held him in his arms. "I can't wait to be smurfing back to working in the tavern tomorrow, but I'll have to be smurfing some sarsaparilla from the forest or else we won't have anymore ale for all of us to be smurfing." "I honestly don't know how you could smurf what you did today as smurfing a break from any work when this is supposed to be your rest day, laddie," Duncan said. "Smurfing a day of rest from my work in the tavern doesn't mean that I can smurf a break from doing anything for the Almighty and His creation, my fellow Duncan," Tapper said. "When you smurf your rest in Him, He will smurf you all the rest you will ever need."

Chapter 2
"Holy hickory nuts, I wouldn't think that you'd be such a friend to the animals like myself or Tracker, Tapper," Nat said. "Hearing you smurf of that makes me feel that I should have been there smurfing those things with you." "If you had been around during that time, my fellow Nat, I would have invited you to smurf along with me," Tapper said. "Yeah, but we were too busy wondering where Baby Smurf went when we were still smurfing on Smurfling Island," Snappy said. "And Nat had his hands full with smurfing the wildlife over there," Slouchy said. "I only wish that I could be there on Smurfling Island to smurf it for myself," Sassette said with a wistful sigh. "The more these boy Smurflings talk about it, the more it makes me interested in visiting that place just to see what it smurfs like." "Yeah, right, like we'd ever take you smurfing to that island if we ever decide to smurf back there someday," Snappy said. "This smurf would be curious to visit that place, if it were possible for this smurf, Snappy," Empath said. "You three have had the enviable privilege of experiencing firsthand all the adventures you have lived through with Smurfling Pan." "You dream of smurfing to that fantastical place, Empath, but my dream is smurfing to the place that the Almighty has prepared for those who will love and follow Him until the day that He calls His believers home," Tapper said. "Now that will be a place worth visiting." "That shining city called New Jerusalem," Empath said, realizing what Tapper was talking about. "That indeed would be a sight to behold." "So tell us what else happened in your story, Tapper," Slouchy said. "How did you end up having to smurf with Azrael when he was helpless in the forest like this kitten?" "A little patience is all I ask, my fellow Slouchy, because I'm getting there," Tapper said. "It was on the following day that me and my fellow Smurfs have smurfed out into the forest to collect sarsaparilla when Azrael smurfed into something that was set up in the forest to catch us or the other animals, but let me smurf this straight from the beginning of the day..."
As Tapper continued his story, Empath saw in the unfolding of events Tapper sitting at the breakfast table with his friend Duncan and a few other Smurfs. "You need me to help smurf in the sarsaparilla for brewing more of your ale, right, laddie?" Duncan asked. "I was hoping that you would offer your services, Duncan," Tapper said. "You sound a bit cautious of wanting to join me and some of my fellow Smurfs." "There isn't anywhere that I wouldn't want to smurf with you, Tapper," Duncan said. "It's just that I have a smurfing in my gut that where you're smurfing in the forest to get the sarsaparilla may be dangerous." "Oh, Duncan, you should know by now that I do not need to fear for myself or for my fellow Smurfs as long as the Almighty is with me," Tapper said. "I can always feel His protective hand smurfing around me at all times, and as long as that's the case, I know that there's no danger that can ever besmurf me." "I don't think I can fully understand this faith you have in this Almighty that you've been smurfing about for years, laddie," Duncan said. "You don't need to fully understand the Almighty...you only need to trust Him and believe in Him," Tapper said. "His Son says that if you have faith the grain of a mustard seed, you can go tell a mountain to go smurf itself into the sea, and it will be done for you." "I can only wonder how many times you have ever smurfed that about Gargamel," Duncan said. "He seems to be one of those mountains that refuses to be smurfed into the sea no matter how many times you try to smurf at him to do so." "I have a feeling that the Almighty is smurfing something about Gargamel that will either bring about his redemption or his removal, one or the other," Tapper said. "If it takes his being smurfed out of the forest for good for the redemption to smurf place, I will leave it in the hands of the Almighty to perform it." "It's too bad Jokey's attempt to redeem Gargamel by making him think he's being smurfed to his final judgment didn't last," Duncan said. "Such trickery will never bring about the actual change of heart that the everlasting love of the Almighty is capable of smurfing, my good Duncan," Tapper said. "Somewhere in that heart of stone that Gargamel has is a broken soul that's just crying out to be loved without any judgment, and I hope to someday be able to smurf into that place where he can see that the Smurfs are not his enemies, and neither is the Almighty." "Well, if you need somebody to help smurf in the sarsaparilla, you can count on me to be there with you," Duncan said. Tapper smiled. "I knew that you wouldn't smurf me down, Duncan. May the Almighty bless you in your deeds."
"Meanwhile, Gargamel was in the middle of teaching his newfound pet, the silver-fanged growler, how to catch Smurfs, and apparently he's finding his student rather hard to control, at least according to what Narrator was able to smurf me," Tapper said to Empath. Empath watched as Tapper told this part of the story from Narrator's recollections. He saw Gargamel in his hovel using some charts he pinned to the wall that would help the silver-fanged growler learn some important lessons. "All right, my growling slobbering friend, here are some important lessons that we will cover today," Gargamel said as he pointed to the pictures on the wall with a pointer. "Lesson number one: this is a Smurf. These creatures are only three apples tall, they are blue, and they are the most disgustingly happy creatures in the entire forest. You should be able to spot them quite easily. Lesson number two: this is a smurfberry bush, and where there are smurfberries, there are bound to be Smurfs. Lesson number three: sit!" The silver-fanged growler growled at Gargamel, refusing to obey that command. "I said sit!" Gargamel demanded. But the silver-fanged growler still refused to obey. Gargamel realized that he wasn't going to get that pet to obey that command. "All right, then, moving on to lesson number four..."
Tapper went out into the forest soon after breakfast with Duncan and a few other Smurfs. On his way to finding a field of sarsaparilla, Tapper saw that Tracker was teaching his fellow forest animal friends some important lessons. "Lesson number five: you should always be careful to beware of human traps, especially those made of iron, because they hurt the most," Tracker said. "Smurf o' the morning to you, my fellow Tracker," Tapper greeted. "It seems that you have quite the audience smurfed around you today." "And a jolly good morning to you too, Tapper," Tracker said. "It's so good to know that a fellow brother Smurf has been watching over my friends yesterday while I was busy smurfing some rare important herbs for Papa Smurf." "Any friend of yours is a friend of mine, I must say," Tapper said. "Of course, if it weren't for your nature lessons, I wouldn't know how to smurf with your animal friends." "It is a special gift indeed to have an empathetic nature for animals, Tapper," Tracker said. He then turned to his animal friends. "Well, it appears that I will have to get smurfing on my errands for my fellow Smurfs, but I will be watching over you in the forest should you ever need me." "Perhaps I could relieve part of your burdens for a spell while me and my fellow Smurfs are out there gathering sarsaparilla, my fellow Tracker," Tapper suggested. "I would be grateful for that, Tapper, as I'm sure that our friends will be," Tracker said as he hopped onto the back of Feathers the crane and then waved to both Tapper and the animals. "Ta-ta for now." Tapper and the animals waved back at Tracker as he flew off before Duncan joined him. "So what was that all about, laddie?" he asked. "Oh, it was just Tracker teaching the forest animals important lessons as usual, my good Duncan," Tapper said. "It does smurf my heart good to know that my fellow Smurf also watches over the animals like he does his own friends." "He's a fine Smurf for that, I tell you," Duncan said. "Now let's get smurfing on finding that sarsaparilla field."
Meanwhile, Tapper's story turned to telling about Gargamel and his continued efforts to tame and train his new pet. At this point, the evil wizard has brought the silver-fanged growler out into the forest in order to track down Smurfs and to see if he is able to learn his previous lessons. "The subject of lesson number six is enthusiasm, Azrael, of which you are showing very little...very little indeed," Gargamel said to his cat, who was trailing behind, not wishing to be anywhere near the silver-fanged growler. Suddenly the silver-fanged growler started to pick up speed and raced on ahead of his master, dragging him along on his leash. "Hey, slow down, you stupid beast," Gargamel shouted. "I want you to be enthusiastic, not reckless in your pursuit." The silver-fanged growler wasn't interested in listening to Gargamel. And neither was Azrael, who just simply went off in his own direction to leave his master to deal with his new pet. Gargamel continued to try reining in his new pet as the silver-fanged growler continued to drag his master along on whatever path it was now following. "Uh, don't you think that...wouldn't it be more advisable if...perhaps if we slowed down and..." But the silver-fanged growler just continued to rush on and on while dragging his master along until they both entered a cave, and then they both ran for their lives out of the cave as they found a dragon inside that they have awakened from its sleep and was now chasing after them.
Empath laughed at that part of the story. "This smurf sees that Gargamel's new pet was so uncontrollable that it was willing to rush right into danger along with his master." "How unfortunate it was for Gargamel," Tapper said, agreeing with Empath's sentiment. "Not that I would want his new pet to come smurfing after us, mind you, but all the same he just didn't have the same luck of smurfing control of his animals like he did Azrael. Which smurfs me to the point in the story where I did smurf into Azrael when he was smurfing off on his own after departing from his master." As Tapper's story continued, Empath saw that his friend and a few other Smurfs were now in a sarsaparilla field gathering as much sarsaparilla as they could carry to bring into the village. Tapper was by himself when he started to hear an animal cry painfully for help. "Great Smurfiny Crickets, that sounds like a cat that got smurfed in one of those iron traps," Tapper said. "I might as well go and smurf what has happened." Leaving behind his basket of sarsaparilla, Tapper followed in the direction that the painful meowing was coming from. He saw that inside the bush was Azrael, who got one of his front paws caught in a bear trap. "Oh, my poor Azrael," Tapper said. "How in the world did this happen to you?" Azrael cried out an answer that Tapper seemed to understand. "There, there, everything will be all right," Tapper said. "This iron trap is too strong for me to smurf it off your paw. I'll see if I can smurf some help from the other Smurfs in the village. Just don't smurf anywhere...I'll be right back." Azrael meowed in agreement as he watched Tapper head off toward the village. Duncan met with Tapper just as he saw him pass by the field. "Ho there, laddie, where are you be smurfing off to now?" he asked his friend. "Azrael has his paw smurfed in one of those traps that has been smurfed in the forest, my good Duncan," Tapper said. "I need to get some other Smurfs to bring out a wagon to help deliver the cat to the village where we can smurf him some first aid." "Hold it right there, Tapper," Duncan said. "Now I know that you want to help our forest animal friends and smurf after them like you would smurf us, but this cat is no friend of ours. You smurf that thing into the village, there's no telling what kind of danger you will smurf us into." "I know what I'm doing, Duncan, and I know that the Almighty will never smurf us into any danger that He can't smurf us out of," Tapper said. "I also know that if we don't smurf any aid to Azrael, that he could die out in the forest, and I wouldn't want to have that be smurfing on my conscience, knowing that I could have helped but didn't." "Hmmm...well, I trust you enough to know that your word is good enough for me," Duncan said after giving the matter some thought. "However, the other Smurfs may not be quite as understanding as I am, and I'm not sure how Papa Smurf would react to you smurfing this kind of decision. Go now and let the others know what they may be expecting if this is your desire. I'll watch over the boys here while you smurf this mission of mercy to our dear adversary." "May the luck of the Smurfish be with you, my fellow Duncan," Tapper said before he continued on his way toward the village. "And may the same be smurfed to you and all of us," Duncan said as he saw Tapper depart.
"And so when I reached the village, I brought with me Hefty, Brainy, and Smurfette as Hefty smurfed a wagon along to help bring Azrael into the village while Smurfette brought a cloth to smurf around the cat's eyes so he wouldn't know where the location of our village is," Tapper said. "Needless to smurf, none of the three Smurfs were very happy about it." Empath watched this part of Tapper's story unfold, as Tapper led the way for the three other Smurfs with Hefty carrying the large wagon with him. "Well, Tapper, I say that we let the smurfing cat lie, because it smurfs him right for smurfing after us these past few years," Brainy said. "Azrael is a mean cat, Tapper," Smurfette said. "Why should we bother to help him?" "Because I know in my spirit that it is the right thing to do, Smurfette," Tapper said. "Besides, Azrael will die if we don't smurf him any help." "It's more likely that we'll die if we do smurf him any help, Tapper," Hefty said. "The Almighty will protect us and keep us safe, Hefty, I promise you, which is what I believe," Tapper said. "He loves us enough to not let a single hair smurf from our heads." "You and this foolish belief in that imaginary God of yours is going to smurf us into trouble one of these days, and you're going to regret it," Hefty said. "Oh dear, I wish Papa Smurf were here so that he would know just what we would do," Smurfette said, sounding very worried. "Well, if you ask me, the wisest decision we could ever smurf in this situation is that we smurf out of here before Azrael smurfs any of us," Brainy said. "Now that's the only wisest thing you have ever smurfed that I can agree on, Brainy," Hefty said. Soon they reached the smurfberry bush where Azrael was hiding behind, and they could hear his cries of pain as he struggled to get his paw free of the bear trap. Smurfette winced as the three of them saw Azrael in this terrible state. "Please listen to me, my fellow Smurfs," Tapper said. "I know Azrael is our enemy, and it's likely that he will not return the favor if we do help him, but right now he's no different from any of the other animals in the forest. And right now we're the only creatures in the forest that can smurf anything for him. If we smurf nothing for Azrael, then we're no better than our own enemies, and I wouldn't want to smurf you being held accountable for not smurfing the good that we could have smurfed today at this very moment." "Well, I can certainly live without smurfing anything for Azrael, and I certainly don't have any fear of this Almighty of yours, Tapper," Hefty said. "Well, I don't think that I can live with myself knowing this, Hefty Smurf," Smurfette said, sounding very sad. "I don't want to find myself smurfing in Hades for not smurfing anything for Azrael when he's suffering like this." "This iron trap looks very strong, so it's very doubtful that even Hefty by himself can smurf it open if we're going to smurf Azrael out of it before we bother trying to smurf him into the village," Brainy said as he observed the bear trap that Azrael's paw was caught in. "Perhaps if we could get Duncan over here to..." "You keep Gutsy out of this, Brainy Smurf," Hefty said. "No iron trap's too strong for me to try smurfing open if I can help it." He went over to the bear trap and tried with all his might to open its claws, even by using a strong stick as a lever, but the trap proved itself to be too strong. "Well, Brainy, are you just going to smurf here, or are you going to help me?" "Papa Smurf is not going to like this at all, not one bit," Brainy said, just simply standing there to lecture to his fellow Smurfs. After a while of struggling and straining, Hefty finally gave up trying to open the trap by himself. "Well, it's going to take more muscle than I can smurf with this thing. We might as well blindfold Azrael to make sure he doesn't know where our village is before we smurf him there and get Gutsy and Tuffy to help me smurf the trap open." "Don't worry, my fellow Azrael," Tapper said consolingly. "We'll smurf you the best care and make sure that you're smurfing back on your feet in no time."

Chapter 3
"That has got to be the most brave thing that you ever smurfed to Azrael, Tapper," Nat said. "I probably would have smurfed the same thing in your place if I was in that situation." "Well, I think that it's the dumbest thing we could have smurfed for Azrael, Nat," Snappy said. "There's no way that cat was ever going to change for any of us." "Maybe this kitten we found won't turn out to be anything like Azrael, Snap," Slouchy said. "It all depends on who owns this kitten, my fellow Slouchy," Tapper said. "But anyway, most of my fellow Smurfs were thinking the same thing when we smurfed Azrael into our village, that smurfing him home with us to tend to his injuries wasn't the brightest idea in the world." "But you knew that it was the most moral thing in the world to do, Tapper, despite what your fellow Smurfs thought at the time," Empath said. "Galloping grasshoppers, Tapper, what happened next?" Sassette asked, eager to hear the rest of the story. "Oh, please, tell us, tell us, tell us!" "Settle down and I will smurf you the rest of what I know and have experienced firsthand, my little Sassette," Tapper said, pleased to know about her interest in the story.
As Tapper's story continued, Empath saw in his recollections the Smurfs in the village gathered around Tapper and the few Smurfs that were with him to bring Azrael into the village. There was a lot of talking going on among the Smurfs about what they saw being brought into the village. "Please settle down, my fellow Smurfs," Brainy said. "It's not what you think it is." "Cre vingt schtroumpfs, are you Smurfs crazy to bring ce chat de monstre maudit into the village?" Painter shouted angrily. "Smurf aside, and let us smurf at it with the pussycat," Fencer said, making moves with his hand like he was wielding his foil. "Great Smurfiny Crickets, my fellow Smurfs, there's no way that I'm going to let you hurt Azrael when he's injured like this," Tapper said with an indignant tone in his voice. "You would smurf between us and Azrael?" Fencer said. "Smurf me with the foil, and let's see who will capitulate first. En garde, you knave!" "If you're going to fight anyone with a foil, laddie, you're going to have to smurf through me first," Duncan said as he joined Tapper beside Azrael. "I'll be pleased to smurf you a shave with my trusty foil, you Gutsy Smurf," Fencer said, eager to challenge him. "The name is Duncan, which you will smurf me by when I'm through with you," Duncan said as he approached Fencer. "All right, all right, settle down now, everybody," Brainy said as he saw Papa Smurf approaching the scene. "Papa Smurf is coming through." The Smurfs stepped aside to let Papa Smurf approach Tapper. "Great Smurfs Of Fire, Tapper, what is smurfing on here?" he demanded. "Tapper found Azrael out in the forest with this iron trap on his paw, and we need a few strong Smurfs to help smurf it off him," Smurfette explained. Papa Smurf sighed. "I can understand your love for animals, Tapper, but I think that you have smurfed your love a bit too far." "Right!" most of the other Smurfs said together in agreement. "Please, Papa Smurf, we've got to smurf something for him," Tapper said. "Look at how much pain Azrael is in right now because of this." Papa Smurf looked at Azrael, who obviously was sounding like he was in great agony. "Amazing...Azrael must have been caught in one of Gargamel's traps," he said to himself while stroking his beard. "Hefty tried to smurf the trap open by himself, but he wasn't strong enough, Papa Smurf," Tapper said. "We need Duncan and Tuffy to join Hefty and help smurf the trap open so we can smurf to his injuries as soon as possible." "Well, I'm sure not joining those two Smurfs in opening up any trap for Azrael to smurf out of," Tuffy said, folding his arms and looking away. "And neither will we," the other Smurfs in the crowd said as they also folded up their arms to show they mean business. "Now, now, my little Smurfs, I know that we all have our differences with Azrael," Papa Smurf tried to speak to the crowd. "I hate Azrael!" Grouchy shouted. "We all hate Azrael!" the rest of the crowd shouted. "But haven't I taught you all that as Smurfs, we must love all creatures great and smurf?" Papa Smurf said. "Granted, loving your enemies will not be easy, but what kind of Smurfs would we be if we didn't extend the same care for our enemies as we would our friends when they are in need?" "But, Papa Smurf, Azrael always chases after us," Painter protested. "Yeah, how about that?" Greedy seconded. "You like smurfing your lives always being like mice to Azrael? Well, I sure don't like it!" "I'd say just throw him out and be done with it," Vanity said. And all the Smurfs seemed to say the same thing that Vanity had said in that moment, demanding that Azrael should leave. "I don't know how you could see Azrael as being any different from any creature in the forest that is in dire need of help, but he is a living being just like we are," Tapper said. "If you are truly Smurfs, you wouldn't be this discriminating toward a helpless creature, now would you?" "That's right, my little Smurfs," Papa Smurf said. "Are any of you truly Smurfs or not?" The crowd of Smurfs looked at each other and themselves and wondered what they're going to do about Azrael. Then Tuffy stepped forward. "Well, I'm not afraid of Azrael, even if he is helpless." "Attaboy, Tuffy," Duncan said. "I knew that you would smurf up to the plate." "Okay, let's smurf this together now," Hefty said, as he, Duncan, and Tuffy grabbed the bear trap and pulled it with all their might to force it to open. Soon the trap opened, and Tapper and Smurfette gently pulled Azrael's paw out, with the cat giving a sigh of relief. "We're going to need a bed for Azrael to smurf upon so that he can recover, my fellow Smurfs," Tapper called out. "You heard Tapper, my little Smurfs," Papa Smurf said. "Let's show Azrael that we care about him as we would our other forest friends." "Yes, Papa Smurf," the other Smurfs said before they rushed off to get things for Azrael's recovery. Brainy stayed with Papa Smurf to talk to him. "So what do you think, Papa Smurf?" Brainy asked. "I honestly don't know about this, Brainy," Papa Smurf said. "All that I do know is that a leopard cannot change his spots overnight, no matter what Tapper would believe." "Oh, I would honestly agree with you on this, Papa Smurf," Brainy said. "But do you think there's a chance that Gargamel himself might change?" "That is something I just don't have the answer for, Brainy," Papa Smurf said. "But whether he changes or not, we are still to act like Smurfs and behave like Smurfs or else we would be no better off than Gargamel."
"In the meantime, Gargamel was still having problems trying to control his silver-fanged growler as it was smurfing him here and there instead of toward his intended target," Tapper said. "Awww, poor Gargamel," Sassette said. "He would never learn his lesson now, would he?" "I wonder if Gargamel has learned anything since we smurfed him, his cat, and his apprentice out of the forest," Slouchy said. "Naah, he's still as dumb as ever, Slouchy," Snappy said. "That wizard's never going to learn anything except to be more evil." "That isn't thinking anything useful or even positive about Gargamel, Snap," Nat said. "Unfortunately that may end up being the truth about Gargamel, my fellow Smurflings," Tapper said. "Even being around people who will smurf that doing good is better than doing evil, he's still responsible for what he smurfs in this life, and if he refuses to smurf good rather than evil over a long period of time, he may become so hardened that it will be impossible for him to change his heart and mind." "That sounds like a terrible thing to happen, Tapper," Empath said. "This smurf hopes that this Almighty of yours will be able to reach out to Gargamel and change him to a decent human being before it's too late." "So how was Azrael doing after the Smurfs removed the iron trap from his paw?" Nat asked. "He was recovering quite well, my fellow Nat," Tapper answered. "We have smurfed up a bed for him to rest on with some pillows and quilts. Papa Smurf made up some lilyroot salve to soothe the pain away. Vanity was doing some grooming to make sure Azrael smurfed his best. Overall, the Smurfs were being very nice to him, even if he didn't deserve it." And as Tapper continued his story, Empath saw in his mind the Smurfs gathered around Azrael lying on his bed watching Vanity doing some grooming while Hefty was holding up the ladder Vanity was standing on. "Well, Azrael, I see that we are looking very smurfy this morning," Vanity said, as Azrael looked at himself in the mirror Vanity gave him. Azrael made a purring sound that made him seem pleased at the attention he was getting. "Oh, Azrael, would kitty like more milk?" Smurfette asked politely, holding up a saucer for him to lick up. Azrael looked at the saucer and just simply yawned. "Or how about some of my fresh smurfberry tarts?" Greedy offered, holding up a tray of his tarts. Azrael just shook his head and settled down on his bed to close his eyes and rest. "Azrael hates smurfberries," Grouchy said. "Well, can't say I didn't try to offer him something to make him feel better," Greedy said, eating one of his tarts. "You smurfed your best, Greedy, and that's what counts," Papa Smurf said as he stood next to Tapper talking with him. "Now, Tapper, we're going to have to smurf some way to release Azrael back into the forest once he starts to feel like his old self again." "It's too bad that he can't smurf with us forever, Papa Smurf," Tapper said. "We would smurf him much better than his old master Gargamel." "As much as I would like to have a pet like Azrael, he's still a cat at heart, and as a cat he smurfs a danger to the village," Papa Smurf said. "When he is feeling better, I would like for you and a few other Smurfs to smurf him back to Gargamel in a cage, but let Gargamel be the one who will open the cage while you and your fellow Smurfs smurf back to the village without either of them seeing you." "I would rather not want to put Azrael in a cage even if he does trust us, Papa Smurf, but I see your point," Tapper said as he looked toward Azrael sleeping peacefully on his bed. He then went over to Azrael and whispered, "Rest well, my feline friend. I don't want to smurf goodbye to a possible friendship, but I will have to let you go back to your master when you're feeling better."
Then Tapper's story turned to speaking about Gargamel's continued efforts to tame his silver-fanged growler as it roamed through the forest in the evil wizard's vain search for the Smurfs. Then as Empath watched, Gargamel saw something on the ground that made him pull on the creature's leash to get him to stay still long enough so that he could observe. "Look, my stupid swamp-breathing friend, there's Smurf wagon tracks, and I smell fresh smurfberries," Gargamel said, sounding excited. "We must be near the village." Then Gargamel heard the painful sound of a cat moaning. "You hear that?" he spoke to his silver-fanged growler. "I swear that sounds like my worthless cat Azrael. He must be around somewhere looking for the Smurfs, or chasing after squirrels, or playing around in catnip, or doing some stupid feline thing. There's only one thing left to do to get his attention."
In the Smurf Village, Azrael was still sleeping in his bed when he started to hear a voice calling for him. "Oh, Azrael. Here, kitty, kitty. Where are you?" "Gargamel!" the Smurfs shouted as soon as they heard the voice. Azrael suddenly awakened from his sleep, dropping the mirror that he was holding in his paw. "Azrael, you naughty kitty," Vanity scolded. "Don't you know that breaking a mirror means seven smurfs of bad luck?" Azrael's demeanor became fearsome as he now raised up a paw to bare his claws. Vanity saw that Azrael was ready to strike at him and quickly ran away, crying, "Oh! Papa Smurf!" Brainy and Tapper stood before the basket, with Brainy fearfully watching Azrael getting even more riled up. "No, Papa Smurf, this is just another one of Gargamel's tricks," Brainy said. "This isn't a trick, Brainy Smurf," Tapper said. "Oh, Azrael, come to your dear old master Gargamel," the voice continued to call out. Azrael climbed out of the basket and slowly approached the Smurfs that were standing before it. Vanity, Duncan, and Papa Smurf ran quickly to the scene taking place. "I had a feeling that this was not going to last for very long, Papa Smurf," Duncan said. "Tapper, smurf out of there while you can," Papa Smurf called out. Brainy departed, but Tapper stood his ground. "Now, now, Azrael, please calm down," he said in a soothing voice. "Gargamel can't find you in the village. He doesn't know where it is." Vanity, Duncan, and Papa Smurf watched as Azrael pinned Tapper to the ground with his uninjured front paw. "Tapper!" Vanity and Papa Smurf cried out. "Injured cat or not, Azrael is going to wish he hadn't smurfed that to my friend," Duncan said with his fists balling up. "Handy, Hefty, go get the fire wagon, quickly!" Papa Smurf ordered. As the Smurfs ran to and fro to evade being Azrael's next target, Tapper continued to talk to Azrael while pinned down. "If you must smurf me down, Azrael, I would gladly smurf my life for you, as I would for any creature in this forest. But someday you will have to answer for what you have smurfed in this world to the Almighty, the maker of heaven and earth, and to His only begotten Son Jesus Christ." Azrael paused as he heard Tapper speak and just looked at him in wonder. "That's right, Azrael," Tapper continued. "He's the One who died for the sins of the world, and He is coming to redeem all of creation, to smurf forth a new world in where justice and righteousness reigns, where all creatures will smurf in peace, where the lion shall smurf down with the lamb and eat straw like the ox. But you won't be part of it if you continue to smurf other creatures in this world like your master Gargamel wants to smurf us." Then Azrael was distracted not just by the sound of his master Gargamel, but also by the sound of a ferocious creature that he knew all too well. It was the silver-fanged growler, and it was coming straight into the village, dragging Gargamel along with him, and very much out of control. "Not so fast! Not so fast!" Gargamel cried out, pulling uselessly on the leash to get the silver-fanged growler to stop. "You're going to take us right through the village!" Azrael saw the silver-fanged growled approaching and ran as quickly as he could out of the village for his life. Gargamel and the silver-fanged growler followed right after Azrael, unable to stop as the growler was now in pursuit of the cat. The Smurfs watched as all three of them left the village. Then Papa Smurf and Duncan turned to Tapper, who picked himself up from the ground and dusted himself off, looking strangely unscathed. "Tapper, are you all right?" Papa Smurf asked, sounding concerned. "You almost had us fearing for your life there, laddie," Duncan said. "I appreciate your concern, my fellow Duncan, but again the Almighty has proven Himself faithful in His protection," Tapper said. "For a moment I felt like I was Daniel in the lion's den, but as there was nothing for me to fear, the Lord has indeed smurfed me safe under the cat's paw." "Amazing!" Papa Smurf exclaimed as he looked at Tapper.
Later on in the tavern, the Smurfs celebrated the departure of Azrael with a glass of sarsaparilla ale, though Hefty celebrated it with a glass of Vita-Juice. "C'est la vie, he was a friendly kitty while it lasted," Painter said as he drank his glass. "It's too bad that we can't have Azrael as a pet, Tapper," Smurfette said. "Then you might as well go back to smurfing with Gargamel again if you want him as a pet, Smurfette, because I sure don't," Hefty said. "Well, it only goes to smurf that cats will be cats, no matter what anybody smurfs to them, because nobody on this earth can ever change the nature of a beast," Brainy said. "They will still smurf after mice, they will still smurf around in catnip, and they will still..." Tuffy hit Brainy in the back of the head with a mallet to get him to stop talking. "No Smurf is interested in me just smurfing the obvious facts around here," Brainy muttered, dazed from the mallet. "I hope this is not going to stop you from helping out anymore animals in the forest, Tapper," Smurfette said. "Nay, it will certainly not stop me, my dear Smurfette, not as long as I'm still smurfing here on this earth among the living," Tapper said. "I'm not eager to have Azrael smurf us another visit anytime soon, even with the protection of your Almighty, laddie," Duncan said. "One time dealing with an injured cat is one time enough for many lifetimes." "I understand how you feel, my fellow Duncan," Tapper said. "But whatever happens to Azrael now, I will not stop praying for him or his master." "You honestly think your praying is going to change the nature of the beast, Tapper?" Brainy asked in disbelief. "I only know that the Almighty is capable of anything, Brainy, including changing your heart and your mind so that you will believe He is real," Tapper said. "Well, that's one thing that I would like to see this imaginary God of yours do," Hefty said. "Be careful of what you ask for, Hefty Smurf," Tapper said. "It might just make you a believer someday."

Chapter 4
"That was a wonderful story that serves as a testimony of your faith, Tapper," Empath said. "This smurf appreciates your being able to tell it." "You honestly think it was the Almighty who saved him that day?" Snappy said, not believing what he was hearing. "I smurf you anything it was that silver-fanged growler that saved him." "Yes, but how would you know that the Almighty wasn't behind having the silver-fanged growler smurfing into the village like that?" Nat asked. "I'm just glad that Tapper survived to smurf that tale to us, that's all," Slouchy said. "Now we just need to find out where this kitty smurfs from so he can smurf him home, right, Tapper?" Sassette asked. "This smurf has a feeling that we won't need to go far in order to do that, Sassette," Empath said. Suddenly they heard a young female voice calling, "Annabelle, where are you?" The kitten responded to the sound of the name being called and ran to meet her mistress, a young girl who went out into the forest with her father. Annabelle leaped into the young girl's arms upon her arrival. "Oh, Annabelle, you naughty little girl, don't ever run on me like that again," the little girl scolded. "Papa and I have searched the entire forest looking for you. You could have been lost or hurt, and then who will look after you when you do?" "Come on, Leandra, it's time for us to bring Annabelle home," the father said. "Coming, Papa," the young girl said as she carried her young kitten with her. She took a brief look back as if she thought that there was someone else in the forest with her kitten where she found her, but all she could see was nobody there. She then raced after her father to keep up with him. The six Smurfs peered out of the bush they were hiding behind. "Well, it appears that Annabelle has a home in which she will be smurfed as a happy healthy young cat," Tapper said. "Only time will tell what will become of her, Tapper," Empath said. "Other than that, this has been one happy reunion for the kitten and her owner." "If only she knew that we would smurf after her kitten if it was ever hurt," Nat said. "Yeah, like the Smurfs would want to have another cat smurfing around their village like Azrael, Nat," Snappy said. "This kitten's nothing like Azrael, Snap," Sassette said. "You're just jealous because she's got a good home to smurf to." "I'm just more worried about having a kitten trying to smurf along with Puppy," Slouchy said. "If you think smurfing care of Azrael by himself is bad enough, imagine trying to smurf care of both pets." "We'll try to manage things, as long as we have the protection of the Almighty that Tapper believes in, wouldn't you agree?" Empath asked Tapper. "Indeed we would, Empath," Tapper said. "Let's smurf back home now, shall we?"

NOTE: * Because Natural Smurf in the EMPATH series was a Smurfling that came from Smurfling Island instead of a de-aged adult Smurf, his role in the adaptation of the original story was given over to both Tapper and Tracker.
