There have been a lot of comments about the amount of product placements in The Smurfs Movie.

Much of it is naturally suited to The Smurfs. For example, all of the "blue" references like Blue Man Group, Blu-Ray and Bluetooth are funny jokes as well as being product placements.

Other product placements also seem to make sense because of the environment. ie. When the Smurfs run around FAO Swartz, it makes sense they would be surrounded by specific toys. Of course, it was the writers' decision to use FAO Swartz in the the first place - which is itself yet another product placement!

Here are some product placements that stand out in my mind...

 -
Blue M&Ms (aka Smurf Droppings)

 -
Madame Alexander Dolls

 -
Blue Man Group

[Astro Smurf]

Probably the biggest product placement is the main characters themselves, if only to get more people to buy Smurf PVCs and stuffed toys. Still, all that product placement can get to the point of turning a movie into an infomercial. Yet without them, how can the producers defray the cost of making a movie? Setting it entirely in the Smurf Forest during the medieval age period of history with nary a single product in sight wouldn't be very cheap.

Great point, Vic.

Also, remember the scene when they were using the laptop? It was clearly showing a Sony Vaio. Of course it has to be a Sony laptop since Sony Pictures was making the animation. On the web in the movie they were also showing Google and Wikipedia.

I also love the homage they paid to Peyo in the movie. Mentioning that the info they were looking up of the Smurfs was "documented by Peyo". Then they showed his picture when the Smurfs found the book in the antique shop. Definitely in line with what Vic was saying having the Smurfs themselves be the biggest product placement. [Smile]

When it comes to product placement it's safe to say that the times square got the most product
placements!
Hello Kitty a Japanese cartoon that's now lives on all kinds of product rather than the show just
like Smurfs during its downtime.
Hello Kitty also in the FAO schwarz scene when azrael got blown from a leaf blower.
Sony always having this kind of their own product placement for quite some time now.
Stealth another film from sony pictures,US marines sures love to use vaio laptops if you know what i mean.
