Sony Plans Smurfy Sequel for Summer of 2013
August 9, 2011 by Ramin Zahed
Give the success of Sony’s summer blockbuster The Smurfs, which has brought int $135 million worldwide since its release on August 29, it’s not surprising that the studio has greenlit a sequel to the CG live-action/animation hybrid. Sony Pictures has announced that it plans to release The Smurfs 2 on August 2, 2013. The film’s original producer Jordan Kerner (Charlotte’s Web, Inspector Gadget, George of the Jungle) is attached to the sequel. The movie has been performing very well at the box office in 23 markets overseas. Domestically, it grossed $78.8 million in its first ten days at the box office. No news on whether Peyo’s little blue guys—and Smurfette—plan to visit L.A., London or Paris on their next big-screen adventure, but we have a feeling their number one enemy Gargamel (played by Hank Azaria in the first pic) will follow them no matter where they end up!

But why do they need to travel through time? Their own time period not interesting enough to craft anymore new stories in?

I wonder the same thing myself...why not just keep the Smurfs in their own time? The original cartoon itself will seem less dated as the years go by than a series of "modern day" Smurf stories, in my opinion.

I would like to see the sequels focus on the Smurfs in their own time period, not time-travelling as was the case for most of Season 9 in the cartoon series (which I find gimmickry and did not save the series from cancellation). I would also like the less emphasis on pop-culture references and crude humor which was an issue among critics including myself.
The sequels need to be better than the current film, not worse and I feel it may be the case.

I would like to see more of Smurfette as the Action Girl rather than the overly weepy Distressed Damsel that Hanna-Barberra and Lucille Bliss stuck her as. The writers really gave Smurfette some long-needed Girl Power to deal with Azrael by herself.

Well, lets hope Smurfette gets to be like 7 from "9" or Princess Mononoke or like Coraline. I hope she becomes more of a heroine than a damsel in distress. I knew how she fought Azrael. It was Smurfy Awesome!

Hanna-Barbera was pretty much stuck with trying to make Smurfette a main character while trying to keep Peyo happy by not straying too far from his portrayal of her. The modern-day film makers obviously don't have that problem. But making Smurfette into an Action Girl character wouldn't ring true to her established personality, in my opinion.

But nine seasons of a Distressed Damsel with hardly any growth to her character? You might as well have Mario's Princess Peach be put in Smurfette's place in the cartoon show.

I agree that Smurfette is really not much of a character, but there has to be a happy medium between "Distressed Damsel" and the rather annoying "Action Girl"/Girl Power stuff that has clogged up so many kids shows. It'd be trading one stereotype for another.

And about making Smurfette more fearless, well... In some cartoon episodes she had shown some attitude towards a situation, proving not to be a damsel-in-distress or a crybaby all the time. By the way, we'd already discussed about that in the topic Is Smurfette Sexist?. I agree with Debbie concerning a mid-term.

If the Culliford family doesn't seem to have a problem with the producers making Smurfette into an action girl while retaining her original character traits, then that's one change we can comfortably live with. Me, I'm glad Papa Smurf's one-time amorous interest in Smurfette in the comic books is basically dead and buried.

I also hope so. Handy is my favourite character too and while I knew he wasn't going to be a main character in the movie, I was still a bit disappointed that he wasn't in it very much. In fact I was disappointed at how none of the other smurfs were really in it very much, I hope they fix that mistake in the sequel.

Usually the Smurf cartoon episodes have a shifting cast of main characters as well as a character that gets thrown in as the main focus or supporting character for one episode and then gets written out, which is pretty easy to do since most of the Smurfs are just faceless masses. So it's possible that another Smurf may be one of the main characters for the sequel. I'm just hoping they don't reuse Gutsy because he was something of a gimmicky character that got used in place of Hefty for an ethnic copy of his character.

The comic stories were much worse, as the main character in the early stories are often nameless and are never heard of again in subsequent stories. I prefer Smurfs to have names and personalities (not steorotypes) than faceless clones which is why I strongly prefer the cartoon episodes than the most of the comic stories.

News Flash!! Smurfs 2 will be shot in Montreal in Quebec, Canada! I went to Montreal in August 2005 with my family, now it'll be the Smurfs' turn! Read all about it!!
Sony Pictures’ ‘Smurfs 2,’ ‘Houdini’ and ‘Singularity’ to Shoot in Montreal
The Hollywood studio is bringing three CGI-heavy movies to Quebec for production one after the other to take advantage of generous tax breaks and digital media incentives.
By Etan Vlessing November 15, 2011 12:58pm

This 3D live-action/CGI family film will finally release July 29 after having its release date changed three times. While being chased by evil wizard Gargamel, the Smurfs are chased into a portal, which transports them to Central Park. Neil Patrick Harris stars alongside the voices of Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, George Lopez, B.J. Novak, John Oliver and Paul Reubens.
TORONTO – Studio movie shoots in Canada these days increasingly come in bunches for added production savings.
Roland Emmerich may have delayed production on his sci-fi epic Singularity in Montreal, but that hasn’t stopped Sony Pictures piling into Quebec with yet more big-budget movie shoots.
The studio is now likely to shoot the $175 million Singularity picture in fall 2012, ahead of a May 2013 release, after Steven Spielberg wraps production on Robopocalypse at the Cite’ du Cinema studio in summer 2012.
Now there’s word Sony Pictures is to shoot the upcoming sequel to The Smurfs and its Houdini project in Montreal as it takes advantage of Quebec’s generous all-spend tax credit and additional digital media tax incentives for live action/CG hybrids.
The studio is near to starting pre-production on The Smurfs 2, which has an August 2, 2013 release, and Jordan Kerner returning as producer.
And Sony Pictures is also sending to Montreal director Francis Lawrence’s high profile film about Houdini, the famed escape artist and magician.
The studio is only the latest Los Angeles producer to secure economies of scale by shooting movies one after the other in Canada, often with the same local production crews and facilties.
Relativity Media had Tarsem Singh shoot the CGI-heavy epic Immortals inside the Cite’ du Cinema studio in Montreal, followed by production of next year’s Julia Roberts-starring Snow White movie Mirror, Mirror, also in Montreal.
And Universal Pictures similarly chose Montreal to shoot Mummy 3 and Death Race one after the other back in 2007.

It's good to know that The Smurfs movie will be one step closer to the original setting in Europe. Not a bad choice for Quebec. If possible i want to take part in the next smurfs movie not this one a third one.
