i love it and think it's absosmurfly positively wonderfully epic, as always from you ;-) i can't wait to read more!
i did get your message about this via skype by the way and i am sorry it's taken me this long to get to it. i had to make a trip back to Cincinnati for an orthodontics appointment and i've kinda been fighting off and on with a good friend and haven't been much in the mood for doing all of the things that usually make me so happy (like reading).
anyway, keep up your epicness! hugs and stuff :-)

Soooo smurfy! I can't wait to read what happens next. Your drawing (and your color version in the art showcase) is really smurfy. It's hard to see poor Speedy like that. You captured the other Smurf's worried faces perfectly.
Don't worry if the next chapter takes a while because... "Balthazaar's castle wasn't smurfed in a day, you know"!!

Several Smurfs gather in Speedy’s hospital room to hear how bad he’s been hurt.
Chapter 5: Speedy Brought In, Bad News
Nurturer Smurfette, considering herself a caretaker of her fellow Smurfs, rushes to Smurf Hospital as soon soon as she hears Clumsy Smurf calling out for Doctor Smurf. This kind-hearted Smurfette wears a longer version of Smurfette’s simple white dress with a pair of ballerina slippers and a pearl necklace. She often volunteers whenever someone needs help.
She gets there just as Hefty Smurf and Poet Smurf arrive, carrying Speedy Smurf in on a stretcher. “Smurf him into the examining room,” Doctor Smurf instructs Hefty and Poet after they enter Smurf Hospital with the stretcher. “I’ll see how bad he’s been smurfed.”
He looks up at Nurturer as she comes through the double doors. “I heard an injured Smurf being brought in,” she says looking over her shoulder at Clumsy. “I came smurfing just as fast as could. What can I do to help?”
Doctor replies, “Just get a bed ready while I’m smurfing Speedy’s injuries.” He leads the two Smurfs carrying their injured friend into the examining room and calls back before closing the door, “And clumsy, go smurf Papa Smurf! I want to consult with him on what I find.”
**********
Speedy is just starting to wake up, and he looks up to see Nurturer standing over him, fluffing the pillow under his head. “Where’s Hefty, Poet and Smurfette? Are they alright? Did they get smurfed, too?” he asks with concern in a soft, weak voice.
Nurturer leans closer, answering softly, “Don’t worry. They’re okay, they just smurfed a few minor scrapes and bruises. The Doctor will be in shortly.” She gently tucks the covers in around him and heads out the door of his private room.
A few short minutes later Doctor and Papa Smurf enter the room with Hefty, Poet, and Smurfette following close behind.
“It smurfs like you’ve passed the critical point, Speedy.” Doctor begins as he steps up beside his bed. “From what I can smurf so far, you’ve been smurfed up pretty badly on the outside, but that should heal up fine.” Doctor pats the hurting Smurf on his shoulder tenderly.
Doctor continues, “I don’t want to smurf to any conclusions right now, so I’m going to smurf the test results closer tonight and check my medical books. I’ll talk over what I find with Papa Smurf. In the morning I’ll know more. Try to smurf some rest, and I’ll see you tomorrow.” Doctor turns to leave and nods to the others. He walks out the door, closing it behind him.
“Say goodnight to Speedy, my little Smurfs,” Papa Smurf advises the others. “You heard Doctor, let’s let him smurf some sleep.”
“Goodnight, Speedy,” the other Smurfs say in unison.
Papa leans over Speedy and says, “Smurf a good night’s rest, Speedy. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
The visitors wave goodbye to their friend before slowly turning to head out the door, passing Nurturer on their way out.
Nurturer blows out the lit candle by the bed, pulls up a chair and gently takes Speedy by the hand. “Smurf your eyes and rest. I’ll be right here if you need anything,” she whispers with a reassuring smile to the weary Smurf.
Speedy slowly drifts off to a fitful sleep...
**********
Speedy starts to stir as the new day begins. He sits up in his bed and stretches his arms out, letting out a big yawn. Forgetting about his injury, he throws his feet over the edge of the bed without thinking and nearly falls to the floor. Nurturer catches him just in time and helps him get back into bed.
“Careful, Speedy! Don’t smurf yourself more than you already are!” she says with concern.
“I forgot...” he says, wiping the sleep from his eyes.
Just then, Hefty comes in pushing the Smurf-sized, wooden wheelchair he used when he broke his foot. “Looks like I’m just in the smurf of time,” he says with a grin. “Let’s smurf you up, Speedy. There no sense in letting my old wheelsmurfer go to waste.”
Speedy sits back up and Nurturer steadies him, as he slowly slides his feet off the bed once again. Hefty parks the wheelsmurfer by the bed and gently lifts Speedy up from under his arms. He carefully swings him around over to the chair and sits him in it. Nurturer then slides a white pair of slippers on his feet, sets them on the foot rests and places a pillow under them.
“There we go,” Hefty says letting out a puff of breath. “Nothing to it.” He swipes his hands together and stands back with his hands on his hips. “Now, if you’re up to smurfing some more company, there are a few Smurfs who’d like to see you.”
Speedy nods.
Hefty opens the door, and he motions for the waiting Smurfs to come in. Poet, Smurfette and Clumsy walk in and go over to Speedy. They begin hugging him gently.
Smurfette says happily, “I’m glad to see you’re up and smurfing about.”
“You smurfed us worried, yup, yup. You sure did,” Clumsy informs him.
After a lengthy visit, Papa Smurf steps through the door with a concerned look on his face. He is followed by Doctor and Preacher Smurf. Papa Smurf says sternly, “I hope you’re not bothering Speedy, my little Smurfs.”
“We just came in to see how he’s smurfing, Papa Smurf,” Hefty assures the elder Smurf.
Doctor approaches Speedy. “I see you can use a wheelsmurfer. That’s good,” he says.
Papa Smurf motions the others to give Speedy and Doctor more room. Hefty, Poet, Smurfette, Clumsy and Preacher gather on the other side of the bed, while Nurturer stays beside Speedy. Papa Smurf steps back to observe.
Doctor takes a deep breath.“I’m afraid I have some unsmurfy news for you, Speedy,” he says with deep sadness in his voice. “Your internal injuries are worse than I first smurfed. After studying my books all night and smurfing with Papa Smurf earlier this morning, it looks like you’ve smurfed a serious back injury. While you can still smurf your arms and legs and will regain some of your strength, you won’t be strong enough to push yourself around in Handy’s wheelsmurfer. And sadly, you won’t be able to walk again, either, much less run.”
“Isn’t there anything you can smurf?” Speedy asks worridly.
Papa Smurf steps closer and answers tiredly with a heavy heart, “I’m sorry, Speedy. We’ve been smurfing all our options and there’s nothing we can do.”
“Oh, boo, hoo, hoo! It’s not fair!” Smurfette cries out as she runs out of the room.
Everyone left in the room hang there heads in sorrow.
Speedy lets out a deep sigh and slumps in his chair, completely devastated. All hope visibly drains out of him, as a tear runs down his cheek.

Preacher Smurf has a talk with Speedy.
Chapter 6: Salvation, Speedy’s New Hope
“What unsmurfy news,” Slouchy Smurfling says in a sad voice, looking over to Speedy Smurf.
Storyteller Smurf leans back in his rocking chair, taking a puff on his pipe. “Sad but true, my little Smurfling,” he says.
“After smurfing the bad news, Speedy bacame very tired, and he wanted to take a nap. So Hefty helped him smurf back into bed and Speedy’s visitors, once they had said their goodbyes, smurfed out the door.”
“Speedy called Preacher Smurf over to him before he left the room and asked him to come back after he smurfed some sleep. He was too tired now, but he had some things he wanted to smurf to him about later. Preacher told him he would gladly smurf back that evening after supper.”
“As soon as Preacher left, Nurturer smurfed to make sure Speedy was okay. After she tucked him back in and turned out the light, she walked out of the room, quietly closing the door behind her as she left. The room fell silent and Speedy settled into his covers, smurfed his eyes and drifted off to sleep...”
**********
The evening shadows began to fall as the Spring sun, in it’s ever moving journey accross the sky, slowly began to make it’s way down toward the horizon and to nightfall.
Preacher Smurf, a religious Smurf who often carries a Bible with him everywhere he goes, strolls into Smurf Hospital. He wears glasses, a long-sleeved, button-up white dress shirt, silvery grey dress pants and dark reddish brown dress shoes. He is the kind of Smurf his fellow Smurfs feel comfortable talking to, come to for advice and discuss their worries and troubles with.
He quietly opens the door to Speedy’s room and peeks around the open door. He enters the room only after he’s sure Speedy is awake. “Hello, Speedy,” Preacher says. “I hope I’m not smurfing your supper?”
Nurturer Smurfette is just feeding Speedy the last spoonful of soup from the bowl he was eating from as Preacher walks up to them.“He’s all done. This one has a smurfy appetite,” she says with a grin. After she pats the corners of his mouth dry with a small napkin and collects the bowl and plate from his supper, she adds, “If you smurf anything else, Speedy, just call for me.” She exchanges nods with Preacher and carries the dishes out with her as she leaves them to their visit.
Preacher pulls a chair up to Speedy’s bedside and sits down with a sigh. “Now what was it you wanted to smurf to me about, Speedy?” he asks, setting his Bible on his lap.
“Well, Preacher...I was wondering...why I had to get smurfed so bad?” Speedy asks with a mixture of saddness and anger in his voice. “What have I ever smurfed to deserve this? I try to be good, and now I’ve lost the one thing I smurf most. I’ll never run again!”
Preacher pauses a moment, trying to think of the best way to comfort his friend and the best way to word his answer. “You see, Speedy, I smurf there are three reasons bad thing happen. The first is because of all the sin in the world...”
“What smurfed that to happen?” Speedy interrupts, curiously.
“The Creator smurfed everything to be perfect. He smurfed all living things to be heathy and all things to last forever,” Preacher replies. “ But The Evil One tricked mankind into eating fruit from the tree The Creator smurfed them not to eat from. Because of that first sin, all other sin came into the world, nature has smurfed out of balance and bad things happen, like sickness and disasters.”
Speedy nods in understanding.
“The second reason bad things happen,” he continues. “is because of sin we have smurfed against The Creator or against others.”
Preacher clears his throat and says, “Now the third reason, Speedy, I think smurfs you best...” Speedy leans forward and listens closely. “The third reason bad things happen is to smurf glory to The Creator, in how we react to our struggles and inspire others,” Preacher says with compassion. “What doesn’t defeat us only smurfs us stronger.”
“But how can I inspire anyone?” Speedy asks in puzzled desperation. “I can’t even smurf anything for myself anymore.” A tear comes to his eye as he goes on, “Why did this Creator of yours do this to me?”
Preacher swallows hard with sympathy for the hurting Smurf, and he gently replies, “Speedy, I firmly believe The Creator didn’t do this to you and I know in my heart He will help you smurf through it. The Evil One causes these bad things to happen to us to make us smurf our backs on The Creator and all the good things He wants for us.”
“How can I go on?” Speedy inquires as depression creeps into his trembling voice. “I’ll smurf like this forever! I’ve smurfed my purpose for living!”
Preacher answers in a soothing tone of voice, “I can’t say I know what you’re going through, but I don’t smurf you’ve lost your purpose, Speedy. The Creator always has a plan and purpose for us that smurfs out for our own good. He’s merely given you a new purpose. Just by not smurfing up, you encourage others. And you saved Hefty, Smurfette and Poet without smurfing about what might happen to you. Would you do things differently if you knew this would happen?”
“No,” Speedy answers with a sniffle. “I guess I would have smurfed it all over again.” He wipes the tears from his face and shows a slight grin.
“Then try to smurf it behind you and move on. It may not be easy, but The Creator will help you,” Preacher says encouragingly. “ If you believe in Him and follow Him, He will come into your heart and save your soul. He will also smurf you with peace, uplift your spirits and see you through whatever comes your way. And if you accept The Holy Son as your Savior, one day when your time in this world smurfs to an end, you are promised to join Him forever in Heaven! There you will smurf with other loved ones who have died before you, and you will be able to run faster than you ever smurfed possible!”
Speedy gets very quiet. He is deep in thought for several minutes before he finally asks, “And how, exactly, do I smurf The Holy Son to save me?”
“It’s smurfy simple,” Preacher tells him. “Just pray to Him like you would talk to anysmurf. Smurf Him to forgive you of your sins and be your Savior. Invite Him into your heart and He will come in and save you.”
Speedy asks softly, “Will you smurf me in prayer, Preacher? I’ve never really prayed before.”
“I would smurf it an honor, Speedy,” Preacher says with a huge smile. He gets up out of his chair, kneels by the bed and takes Speedy by the hand. “Smurf after me,” Preachers says to Speedy as he begins to lead him in a short and simple prayer that will change his life forever.
“Heavenly Creator, I’m asking You to forgive me of my sins. I accept You as my personal Savior, Holy Son, and askYou to come into my heart. Thank You for forgiving me. Please help me to live the way you want me to and let my life be pleasing to You, bringing You honor and glory. Thank You for all things, Creator, and in Your precious name I pray, Amen.”
Speedy follows Preacher in deep prayer, repeating every word with all of his heart. As he prays he begins to feel a great weight lifting from him and a calm peace washes over him. He finishes his prayer and leans back, looking up with tears of joy flowing down his face.
Preacher stands and gives Speedy a great big hug, and he is filled with new hope.

Handy Smurf tells the other Smurfs about his new invention.
Chapter 7: Handy’s New Invention, Adventurer’s Quest
Two mornings pass and Papa Smurf decides it’s time to call an urgent meeting. He has Harmony Smurf summon the other Smurfs by blowing an alert on his bugle. All the other Smurfs rush toward the sound of Harmony’s horn, where he stands beside Papa Smurf in the center of Smurf Village.
“Hurry, my little Smurfs,” Papa Smurf shouts to the approaching Smurfs. “I have some important news to smurf with you.”
The gathering Smurfs begin to softly talk among themselves, wondering what all the commotion is about.
Brainy Smurf, being the first to arrive, appoints himself the duty of making sure every other Smurf is present. After several minutes the croud starts to settle down and Brainy speaks up in his usual whiny voice, “Papa Smurf! It looks like about everysmurf is here.”
“Thank you, Brainy. I can see that,” Papa Smurf says with a chuckle.
“All but Handy, Hefty and Nurturer... and Speedy, of coarse. Do you want me to go smurf them out for not coming?” He eagerly asks Papa Smurf with a smug grin on his face.
Papa Smurf sighs and replies, “No, Brainy, that’s alright. I know why they haven’t smurfed the call. Hefty and Nurturer are tending to Speedy and Handy is smurfing the finishing touches on a very important project.”
Brainy looks down at his feet and scratches his right foot on the ground. “Okay, Papa Smurf,” He mutters softly in disappointment.
Papa Smurf clears his throat and turns to address the crowd. “Listen up, my little Smurfs. You all know what smurfed to Speedy the other day. He’s getting much better, and Hefty and Nurturer are tending to him now.”
The gathered Smurfs let out a series of sighs of relief at thegood news.
“We have a surprise for him,” Papa Smurf adds with a smile. “Handy and I have worked together and invented a new Autosmurfic Wheelsmurfer for him, so he doesn’t need other Smurfs’ help to smurf him around. We need eight Smurfs to volunteer to help gather some special things we need to make this chair.”
Every Smurf there raises their hands to volunteer.
“You can’t all go,” Papa Smurf says smiling to himself, feeling proud of his Smurfs. “Thank you, my little Smurfs, but just eight of the most brave and adventurous Smurfs are needed. For smurfing these items will not be easy.”
As eight Smurfs, Timber Smurf, Miner Smurf, Grouchy Smurf, Adventurer Smurf, Toughy Smurf, Tracker Smurf, Wild Smurf and Clumsy Smurf, step forward, he continues, “Okay, good, good. All volunteers please meet me at Handy’s workshop in an hour, and we will get smurfing on it.”
**********
A group of ten Smurfs gather around a drawing board in Handy Smurfs workshop. Pinned to the drawing board are plans for the automated wheelchair Handy and Papa Smurf have just invented.
“Now, my little Smurfs, pay close attention to what Handy is smurfing you,” Papa Smurf advises the others.
Handy clears his throat and grabs a white pointer from his workbench. “Okay, this is the Autosmurfic Wheelsmurfer,” He says, pointing at the plans.
“It’s frame will need to be smurfed of a special enchanted mohagany wood found only in the Grove of Ancients. It is light weight and allows magical energies to smurf through it, to make the wheelsmurfer go.”
Papa Smurf speaks up, “Wild can smurf the Grove of Ancients with the help of his animal friends. It is said to be protected by beasts somewhere near the center of the Enchanted Forest. Timber and Toughy can help smurf the wood back here.”
“This is the tank,” Handy says, pointing to the back part of the chair in the plans. “This is what smurfs the power for the wheelsmurfer. For it we need Smurfurites, strong, weather resistant, glass made when lightning strikes quartz in some kinds of sand. Enough can be smurfed for our needs in the Old Extinct Volcano.”
“And these...” He points to the pipes below the tank in the plans. “are the tailpipes for the fumes smurfed by the fuel burning off in the tank. They need to be made of Smurftanium, strong, light weight metal that won’t corrode or rust. Smurftanium deposits can be smurfed in the Old Extinct Volcano, too.”
Papa Smurf speaks up again, “Tracker can smurf a group there. Miner and Clumsy can help find the Smurfurites and Smurftanium.”
“And lastly,” Handy begins. “I’ll smurf with Adventurer and Grouchy to Demon Springs. There we’ll gather Mystic Steam to use in the Enchanted Tank to help smurf Smurfberry Juice into magical fuel.”
“Handy’s group will leave first,” Papa Smurf says as he leads the other Smurfs out of Handy’s workshop. “Wild’s group will get smurfing when they get back, and Tracker’s group will go last. Good luck, my little Smurfs, and travel safely.”
**********
Handy leads two other Smurfs along the most direct path to Demon Springs.
Adventurer Smurf follows close behind, riding on his orange gecko. This adventurous Smurf wears a dark brown leather jacket over a tan shirt with tan pants. He also wears brown shoes and a brown hat, and he carries a smurf-sized whip, along with other useful things for adventuuring, in a pouch slung over his shoulder.
“I hate long trips,” Grouchy Smurf complains, gruffly. “But I would smurf anywhere to help Speedy,” he adds in a softer tone of voice.
“Here we are,” Handy informs his companions as he stops at the rocky ground at the edge of the springs. “I’ve been here before. We must be smurfy careful, there are Steam Demons in the guisers!”
Adventurer looks around warily, climbing down from his gecko and unlatching the clasp on his pouch. “Well, let’s get smurfing,” he says hastily. “The sooner we get enough steam, the sooner we can get back. This place smurfs me the creeps.”
He turns to the saddle on his gecko’s back, unhooks several of the containers hung on it and hands some of them to Handy and Grouchy.
“Follow me,” Handy says. “I think I can remember a good spot to smurf the best steam guisers.”
Adventurer leads his gecko by it’s reigns, and he and Grouchy fall in behind Handy. They make their way through the rough ground to a group of several of the larger, more active guisers. After Adventurer ties his mount to a nearby, scraggly tree, the trio begins collecting steam from the guisers as they erupt.
Grouchy gets too close to the edge of one of the bigest guisers at the edge of a dropoff and gets sprayed by hot steam. “I hate hot steam,” he replies.
“Just don’t smurf so close, Grouchy,” Handy instructs his ill tempered friend.
“This is too easy,” Adventurer says as he notes the increasing guiser activity. “Something is bound to go wrong, I can smurf it in the air.” He hurridly fills another container, hangs it over his shoulder with the others he already collected and steps away. His slips his right hand into his pouch and takes hold of the handle on the curled up whip.
The ground suddenly begins to shake and Grouchy, caught off guard, loses his footing and slips over the the edge of the droopoff. Just then the guisers erupt all at once, revealing large, steaming, ghost-like, whispy Steam Demons as the air clears.
“Grouchy!” Handy screams. He looks over the edge of the droopoff and sees Grouchy dangling from a root he managed to catch hold of. “For smurfs sakes hang on!”
A Steam Demon slaps Handy away and drips steamy water onto the root Grouchy is clinging to, making it very slippery.
“I’m coming!” Adventurer calls to his frantic friend, as he holds on for dear life. He snaps the whip out of his pouch with practiced speed and races toward the droppoff. Steam Demons reach out at him, and they cringe away as he cracks the whip at them. He stops by Handy, helps him to his feet and the two continue on, dodging the vile creatures and cracking the whip at them as they go.
Grouchy calls out to his friends in a panic, “Help! I really hate fallng!” He starts to lose his grip and slides down to the end of the slippery root. “Smurf is me!”
His saviors arrive none too soon. “Smurf onto my smurfwhip, Grouchy,” Adventurer instructs his friend as he lowers the whip over the edge. Just as the root slips out of Grouchy’s hand and he begins to fall away, the whip reaches him and he grabs ahold of it.
“Hold on tight,” Adventurer calls down to Grouchy. “I’ll smurf you back up in a jiffy!”
Handy fends off the Steam Demons by throwing rocks at them while Adventurer pulls Grouchy up from the dropoff. As soon as the rescue is over they all rush back to where the gecko is tied up. Adventurer arrives first, hops in the saddle, reaches down with his free hand and swings his friends up behind him.
They quickly hang the containers they still had slung on their backs on the saddle as Handy says with a sigh, “That was close!”
“We haven’t smurfed out of the woods yet,” Adventure exclaims as points behind them. “Look, here they come! Hold on for your smurfs!” He cracks his whip at the steam creatures, pulls on the reigns with his other hand to spin the gecko around and they race away from Demon Springs...

Timber, Wild and Toughy are brought before the Ancient One.
Chapter 8: Lunch at Greedy's, The Grove of Ancients
At Smurf Hospital, Hefty Smurf holds the front door open for Nurturer Smurfette as she pushes Speedy Smurf through it in a wheelsmurfer. They leisurely make their way to Greedy Smurf’s house for a late lunch.
“It was very smurfy of Greedy to invite us to lunch,” Nurturer says gratefully. "Don't you agree, Speedy?"
Speedy speaks up softly, “Yes it is. I’m starving! I could smurf a...” He loses his train of thought as three Smurfs race by them mounted on an orange gecko. “What’s smurfing on?” he asks Hefty. "Why are they in such a hurry?"
“Oh, it’s nothing to worry about,” Hefty assures his friend. “Handy’s probably smurfing supplies for a new project.” He winks at Nuturer and she smiles back, knowing it’s a surprise project for Speedy that Handy is working on.
**********
Toughy Smurf arrives at Timber Smurf’s logging camp, where he finds Wild Smurf and Timber getting a small, Smurf-sized wagon ready for their trip to the Grove of Ancients.
Wild calls out to a pair of his rabbit friends, each with soft white and brown mixed color fur, and they hop out of the forest in answer to his cal. He walks over to them and after a brief conversation in animal talk, he leads his friends to the wagon and hooks them up to the reigns. He scratches one behind the ear and the rabbit thumps a foot in delight.
“Well, there be our strong friend, Toughy,” Timber says when he notices Toughy walking up to the wagon to stand beside him. “We be nearly ready to get smurfin’.” He climbs up into the front of the wagon and reaches down to help his friend up into the seat next to him. “There ya go.”
After Toughy settles into his seat, Wild hops in the back of the wagon with the grace of a deer and chatters to let the others know he’s all set. Timber pulls on the reigns and when the rabbits start pulling the wagon, Wild’s squirrel friend, Chitters, follows them through the trees.
**********
They ride along, following the path Wild finds that leads into the heart of the Enchanted Forest. When it seems like they've travelled long enough to take a break, they stop for a light snack and Wild sends Chitters to scout out the trail ahead.
After their meal, Chitters comes racing back to the wagon out of the trees. He excitedly chitters to Wild, telling him of something he found. Chitters jumps to the trees and looks back to Wild, before he starts up the trail, jumping from tree to tree. Wild franticly points up the trail, urging the others to follow.
The three Smurfs jump in the wagon and Timber snaps the reigns. He pushes the rabbits as fast he dares without wrecking the wagon. He spots Chitters sitting at the edge of the trail, looking up a small path. “Woah, my rabbit friends! Smurf down! Woah!” he hollers as he pulls on the reigns to stop them. He rolls in behind Chitters and the wagon comes to a full stop.
Wild leaps out of the wagon and heads up the path. The others hop out and follow, where they find him kneeling by a grey wolf that’s caught in a Human hunter’s steel trap. She whimpers softly as Wild gently examines her front right leg.
Timber goes back to the wagon and returns with his double bladed axe in hand. The injured wolf cringes at the sight of the ax and Wild pets her rump to calm her. As Timber slips the ax handle in between the teeth of the trap and pries it open, Wild gently slides the wolf’s foot out of the cruel device. She licks them both on their faces in thanks and limps off into the forest.
The trio of Smurfs get back in the wagon, pleased with themselves for freeing the injured creature, and start back down the trail.
**********
After nearly an hour passes, they begin hearing howls in the near distance and rustling sounds in the brush beside the trail, just out of site.
All at once three large wolves jump out of the brush in front of them, blocking the trail. A lean, slender Wood Elf sits astride the larger middle wolf. Timber stops the wagon and the Wood Elf dismounts.
“I am Head Keeper of the Grove of Ancients,” he announces with pride as he motions to the trees. Several more wolves appear out of the brush and surround them, some carrying other Wood Elves on their backs. “We don’t like unexpected ‘guests.’ Why are you here?” He looks the travelers over with suspicion.
Toughy replies gruffly from his seat on the wagon, “We’ve come to smurf some enchanted wood to help our friend.” The hair on the wolves backs bristle and the lesser Wood Elves string up their bows and aim at the visitors as soon as they hear his answer.
Just then a familiar wolf limps out from the brush and places herself between her rescuers and the Head Keeper, growling as she takes a protective position. “What is the meaning of this?” he demands and walks up to the injured wolf. She lets out a series of growls, snorts, soft barks and a few yips in explanation. He looks to the Smurfs, back to the wolf, and then the stern look on his face begins to soften. “Ah, I see,” the Head Keeper says to the wolf and looks over to the Smurfs. “We don’t take kindly to strangers who want to take our wood, but we care for Human trappers even less. We have lost more than a few of our pack to their traps. You have our gratitude.” He nods with a small smile. “Come with us, we will bring you before the Ancient One to explain your cause.”
He mounts his wolf and the pack leads their guests up to a dead end in the trail. The Head Keeper presses a small, twisted horn to his lips and blows a signal call. In response the brush blocking the trail moves aside to reveal the entrance to the Grove of Ancients...
**********
The newcomers look around in awe at all of the enchanted trees as they continue on toward the center of the hidden grove. They see long lived trees of every kind imaginable, and a few they have never seen before. The trees here all have faces, and their soft voices can be heard on the rustle of the slight breeze, as they speak to each other.
They are brought before the trunk of what appears to be the tallest and oldest tree they have ever seen. A branch mysteriously moves down to the ground at their feet and, at the urging of the Wood Elf leader, they hop out of their wagon and climb onto the branch. As it begins to lift back up into the air, Chitters jumps on, between Timber and Wild, and the four of them try to steady themselves and keep their balance on the moving branch. The Smurfs find themselves lifted up before the face of the old tree.
“Ah, Smurfs,” the tree says in amusement with a deep, husky voice. “I haven’t seen one of your kind in ages.” He chuckles and loses himself in memories of the past. “I believe the curious fellow called himself Storyteller.”
He regains his focus and addresses his visitors. “Anyway, forgive my manners, let me introduce myself. I’m known as the Ancient One. I’m the eldest of the Treefolk who live here. Won’t you please tell me who you are?”
Touchy answers a bit angrily, “I’m Toughy. We didn’t smurf a very warm welcome.”
“Ah, yes. The Wood Elves tend to be wary of strangers,” the Ancient One replies.
Wild chatters in his usual way, introducing himself and asking about the welfare of the wolf they freed from the trap.
“No need for concern, little one,” the elder Treefolk says. “Wild was it? The she wolf is in good hands. The Wood Elves are very talented in the healing arts of nature.”
“I’m Timber,” Timber introduces himself. “We be smurfing here on an important task, don’t ya know.”
The tree being asks, “And what is this task that brings you to the Ancient Grove?”
“We need to smurf some of your enchanted wood,” Toughy answers gruffly.
The Ancient One responds with concern in his voice, “The Wood Elves mentioned that.” He grows very serious and looks to Timber’s ax with keen interest. “And may I ask why?”
Timber clears his throat and replies, “We have an injured friend who needs a wheelsmurfer to get around, and he’s too weak to smurf himself. We need some of the special enchanted mahogany wood in this grove to smurf him a new, lighter chair that he can move by himself.”
The leader of the Treefolk pauses in deep thought, carefully considering what he has just heard. After several intense moments the Ancient One speaks. "We don't usually allow wood to be taken from our grove, little ones." He lets out a deep sigh as bad memories flood back to his mind.
"For you see, once, long, long ago, there were many more of us..." He gestures with another of his branches to the other Treefolk around him. "We lived in peace and harmony with all, sharing our wood with any who needed it. Then Mankind found us...
"At first they took only what they needed. Then more and more men came..." He pauses with deep sadness and continues, "They began demanding more of our wood, and as their greed grew, they began taking our wood from us by force. Our numbers started falling rapidly, because Man was chopping us down in large numbers." The sound of Treefolk gasping in horror floats along on the breeze.
"Soon our groves started disappearing and few of us were left. These Wood Elves sympathized with our struggle to live and became our protectors. They keep us hidden from the eyes of Man. We few here are all that's left of our kind in the world."
"Oh, my smurf!" Timber says excitedly. "Now we be understandin' why yer so nervous about us wantin' to smurf yer wood. We're not needin' much, just enough to smurf this special wheelsmurfer fer our friend, don't ya know." The other Smurfs nod in agreement.
A nearby Treefolk asks, "Why does this friend of yours need this special chair, again?"
"How was this friend of yours hurt?" another Treefolk says.
"Why should we give you our wood?" a third Treefolk adds.
Toughy starts to get huffy and speaks up in defense of his friend, "If you must know, he was hurt smurfing three other Smurfs from a big rock slide! It smurfed him up so bad he'll never smurf again! It left him too week to even smurf himself in a regular wheelsmutfer!!"
"Calm yourself, little one," the Ancient One says to the angry Smurf. He then asks the other Treefolk, "Such a noble act is truly worthy of our help, don't you think?"
The grove is filled with the rustling whispers of the Treefolk talking to each other. One female Treefolk says in a prideful voice as she raises two of her branches to poof up her leaves, "Well, I for one could use some old branches removed."
"It's been ages since I've had a good trim," another Treefolk says.
The Ancient One chuckles to himself and says, "There you have it, then. My people have spoken. But remember, my little friends, just take what you need."

Great chapter and drawing!
I love how they said, "It's been ages since I've had a good trim" & "Well, I for one could use some old branches removed" when they agreed to sharing their wood.

This new chapter made me think of The Smurfs and the "Discover the Forest" campaign.
