 Black Smurf vs Purple Smurf
The original title of the story (which came out in the 1960s) was "Les Schtroumpfs Noirs" - literally meaning "The Black Smurfs". Now the English story is called, The Purple Smurfs.
The black Smurf was replaced by the purple Smurf because there was concern that the story would be considered offensive (ie. racist). The Hanna-Barbera cartoon adapted the story and showed the baddie Smurfs as purple. Now Papercutz has followed suite. The Purple Smurfs book was the first volume released by Papercutz. This story had never been published in English before!

Was it necessary to change The Black Smurfs into The Purple Smurfs? ![[Confused]](confused.gif)

It is interesting that many Smurf collectibles are still using the black Smurf and have not changed to purple. For example, pins, stamps, and toys like the Kubrick & Plastoy statues all use Black Smurfs.

The Nintendo Game Boy Advance (GBA) and Sega Game Gear videogames also used a black Smurf. These games were released well after The Purple Smurfs cartoon had aired on TV.
The Revenge of The Smurfs - (GameBoy Advance)
 The Smurfs (Game Gear)
The Sega game was from 1994. The GBA game was from 2002. I still love playing the black & white The Smurfs GameBoy game!

One of my EMPATH story ideas was basically bringing the Black Smurfs into that continuity along with the Purple Smurfs, with the difference being that Black Smurfs cannot be affected by tuberose pollen, though they can still be changed into Purple Smurfs.

Hmmm I think it's a bit of a stretch to even consider the Smurfs racist or anti-Semitic.
Firstly, to define a Jewish steriotype so clearly means one has to make observations of Jewish culture and find common characteristics of that culture based around those observations. Then to stereotype it is to take that common idea and cartoon it. For example, I might expect someone with a certain accent to be from a certain area. Such as a Southern accent, from somewhere below the imaginary "Mason Dixon" line. I would have know a little bit about my American history, and I would have to understand the associations with the fall of the Confederacy and the grinding poverty the people of the South lived in after the Civil War. Much of this would also be fed through the media of Northern Propaganda to justify the actions of the Northern investors after the war. So, with that in mind the "Southern Accent" = ignorance, poverty, and stupidity.
Is that true?
Of course not!
But that is how stereotypes work.
They are filtered assumptions based on a few facts and lies.
To say the Smurfs are racist is another assumption based on a few facts and someone's opinion.
There is nothing really racist or anti-Semitic about the Smurfs. It just can't be proven!
A) Gargamel has no religion.
B)Gargamel is not a miser, if he was, he'd be like his Uncle Balthazar. Gargamel has spent his money on something. Education? Books? Magical Items? We don't know, but we do know he is broke and is looking for a easy way out that does not require actually "WORKING".
If you know a Jewish person, you will know they work hard!
C) Just because a person is tall and balding does not make them a Jewish stereotype. I mean really?????
Finally, the comics are fantasy. I mean c'mon does this guy do the same thing with say X-men or Superman? How about Conan? There's some good fodder for the analyst.
Comics are comics, and the reader can interpret them as they like, but don't slander a comic and start throwing around accusations unless they are truly founded in fact! The words anti-Semitic and racist still have a lot of weight to them and they incite many negative feelings in people. I feel like this person knew it, and he specifically chose to use those words to evoke the feelings to get people to read his book.
To me, that is just plain disgusting.

I am quite surprised that while Papercutz changed the colors of the infected Smurfs and the Swoofs, but still retained the alleged "sexist" language that Gargamel used for the Smurfette formula. Intersting in the English version published by Dupuis in the early 1980s, it changed the text to fit with the cartoon adaptation and changed the footnote to make a "male chauvinist pig" reference.
Changing the colors of the infected Smurfs violates Peyo's intentions and Papercutz should have at least provided an explanation that there was never any racist idelogy beyond their color.

Here are some interesting Black Smurf collectibles made by Pixi.
Black Papa Smurf by Pixi From 2010
Black Smurf Capture by Pixi From 2012
The Pixi Smurfs are tiny Smurf collectibles. They are hand-painted metal figures that are only about an inch or two tall! Each Pixi Smurf comes in a fancy red box with a numbered certificate - so there are only a limited number issued. The Pixi Smurfs come from France.

Good point, VicGeorge. All of the plush Smurfs have always been black, not purple.
What do you guys think of this Black Smurf Pillow? Probably not the most comforting bedfellow!

It is.
Personally, I prefer the Purple Smurfs because they are a much better alternative in America.

As an african american man myself, I believe this is beyond ridiculous. It' not like they have huge red lips, wool-like afros and nose-rings. They're INK BLACK! How in thw WORLD is being ink black racist?!?! If anything, they look MORE evil in purple with their blood red eyes...

Agreed. I even understand the reason why HB realized to change their color for the concern of being considered racist, since not all viewers don't understand things the same way; but one must remember this has nothing to do with ethnicity at all. More about here: Racist Smurfs Personally I prefer the black Smurfs because they're the originals. ![[GNAP!]](graemlins/gnap.gif)
