The smurfs dvd's are bootleg and the quality isn't that well. I have a set and they wern't worth my money. The smurfs came out in the 1980's and they have no original dvd's that I know of.

Yeah, i bought these. They're better than nothing but i was extremely annoyed to find out they were illegal, incomplete, and they skip. Plus the last two are in spanish. The one thing i like is that i waited till the price dropped forty dollars. i thought it was kinda funny though; the seller is no longer a registered user

Hi Bluechalice,
It looks like this may be a new bootlegger, although others may be more familiar with the fake DVD scene then I am....
He/she is still running the auction - here is a direct link.
The seller has some interesting negative feedback. This one probably says it all: "No reply to email about POOR quality BURNED DVD from Cartoon Network!".
There we have it. A "TV rip".
With regard to quality: Unless the pirate made a direct digital dump of the Cartoon Network source feed from digital cable or satellite (possible for the trained but most pirates lack the skill), the picture and sound quality is going to be poor. This poor quality is due to the fact that the source material on Cartoon Network would be transferred to analog mode and then re-digitized, which would severely degrade the video/audio quality. Would most people desperate for a copy of the show care? Probably not, but I would guess that the quality is similar to a moderately good VHS copy.
I wonder how long this guy will be allowed on eBay? Has anyone bought these DVDs?

I've bought those dvd's from him, and quality is really decent, the set 33 episodes is not from cartoon network, very nice package and good price!

Hi conker,
I looked over his auction again, and the first thing I noticed is that he ships worldwide - but he doesn't say what video system the disc is for. Is this a NTSC disc? PAL? SECAM? I will bet that this is an NTSC disc and people from the UK would be very unhappy with a flipping, black and white picture. Why doesn't he state "USA/Canada/NTSC only" in the auction?
Still, after reading your message, I decided that maybe I should re-check this guy's feedback. After flipping through one or two pages, I found repeated negative feedback, including:
- "BEWARE,seller lies about description (was a burned CD, not "new")
- Seller could've been honest &said Burned off of Cartoon Network..big difference
- it is recorded from the cartoon network we thought it new
His auction states "NOT RIPPED FROM CARTOON NETWORK" but why does his negative feedback say exactly the opposite?
I then decided to check out his positive feedback - and even that includes negative comments, such as:
- DVD not Toshiba compatible
His auction states that his DVDR copy will "PLAY ON ANY DVD PLAYER" - but his positive feedback says that there are incompatibilities. He doesn't even say what kind of DVDR disc he uses. Is it DVD-R? Is it DVD+R? Some brands of DVD players are compatible only with DVD-R, some only with DVD+R, and some with both. Why mislead the consumer? The only answer I can come up with is that he really doesn't care once he gets your money.
I think more people would be happy with licensed, legal videos available on places like eBay.

Here is his latest pirate creation:
33 Pirated Smurf Episodes on DVD
Let's go through the costs...$1.00 for printing the disc labels and jacket on an inkjet printer, $1.00 for two blank DVD-R (or DVD+R...who knows) discs, and $1.00 for one DVD case. That's $22.00 profit on each set of discs he sells!

Box design looks like that from Infogrames' The Smurfs videogame for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.

I've not been dissapointed with this dvd collection. What have you got against this businessman? He is giving an invaluable service, and delivering the best quality dvd's and no one can argue with. What is your deal?

Let me see Angry...what could I possibly have against this businessman?
Why not, for starters, we simply forgive the fact that the product is pirated and illegal (the Christmas season has made me very giving...)
First, the auction doesn't state the video standard. Most (normal) people don't have the foggiest idea what a video standard is - until a relative or friend gives them a disc that doesn't work. Canada, the USA and Japan use NTSC, England and Australia use PAL, and French-influenced places use SECAM. See, that was easy! Exactly what video system his disc is made for should have been disclosed - very basic stuff here.
Second problem: disc type. Our friendly pirate makes his copies using a home computer. The only difficulty is that, like the old 1980s videocassette wars (VHS versus Beta), there are two "standards" for DVD copies. One is called DVD-R, the other DVD+R. So what disc type did Mr. Pirate use? Of course, he doesn't say. Some home DVD players can only play one or the other, some both. There are going to be a lot of unhappy kiddies when they insert the DVD into their player and are greeted by a nice Christmas-y "NO DISC".
Third: It's copied from Cartoon Network. All of his feedback says so. And the feedback also says the quality stinks. His positive feedback isn't so hot either.
Fourth: One feedback states he forgot to remove some of the commercials from Cartoon Network. Unreal.
Finaly...IT'S PIRATED (did I forget to mention that earlier? Oh dear...) He shouldn't be selling it, period.
Ahar!

hi, I've seen many messages about the guy who are selling them now. first of all - that's very nice guy, he's ordering those dvd's from somebody else, he's not making them. 2nd dvd set I bought from him is not a cartoon network rip, volume 1, 3, 4 is - which i bought them all - are, and I didn't saw any commercials in them. somebody's trying to destroy his reputation. all are in quality about 8/10. I'm still thinking that the dvd's he selling are the best on ebay - other people I was ordering from were selling crap, his auctions are not perfect but definetely nice addition. anybody bought australian release of smurfs??????? is it good???????

I don't think anyone's trying to ruin anyone else's reputation. The facts Pap Smurf stated are facts, and he just thought the consumer should know. That's fair. If you bought them and are happy, that's fair too.
That said, I wish they'd come out with a legal dvd of the Smurfs. They're putting a lot of old stuff on dvd now. We should petition to get the Smurfs out.

Thanks for the response crys!
Conker: I'm pretty sure his feedback speaks for itself. Just a few weeks ago (December 6, 2004) he received this in his feedback:
- product received was not exactly what was described
Now it seems he's trying to flood his feedback with purchases to move his recent negatives/neutrals to the next page so people can't see it.
It looks like people agree he sells shoddy, second-class pirated merchandise. I'm inclined to believe his numerous negative/neutral feedbacks. And yes, I'm sure his pirate discs work for some of his customers, not that he really cares.
I love the idea this guy is telling people he gets the pirate DVDs from "somebody else". I can just see the greasy bad guy in an episode of NBC's Law & Order saying exactly the same thing. "No man, it's not my stuff! I got it from somebody else!" From whom? The Pirate Fairy?
Finally - I find it really humorous the idea of a pirate worrying about his "reputation". Really? I didn't think that was foremost in the criminal mind...
