CHAPTER 1
- - – - - - -
Near the lake, there was a quiet girl who sat on her knees in front of the water. She was dressed in a lacy light blue dress with yellow underneath the skirt. Carefully sown into her skirt was a star, several of them stranded along the depths of fabric. She was beautiful, it seemed. Her long hair of deep curls glowed in the moonlight as she dipped her blue fingers into the water. She softly sang to herself, the water lighting up as she serenaded to the stars. Behind her, a figure watched. Urbane Smurf. Boy, was he her biggest fan. For moons, this routine between them became constant; with her one viewer seeing over her as she performed deep into the night. Of course she knew he was there. She was just too nervous to confront him in the morning. Though, even if she wasn’t, it’d be hard to find him. Moreso; hard to find HER. She wasn’t connected to the village and hadn’t talked to a single other Smurf in her life, seeing as she looked like a mockery of what they, as a species, were supposed to be. No matter how much she stressed that in her mind, it didn’t matter. She was perfectly happy just doing her job.
One day, she stopped coming back.

Smurf Village was cheerful in the morning. Everyone was chipper and sociable- well. Mostly everyone. Grouchy lives there, after all. Everything seemed to be normal- a few Smurfs doing their jobs while the others were just getting ready to start the day. One of those Smurfs happened to be Smurfette- the towns prettiest Smurf of them all. She’d been reformed years ago by Papa Smurf, as before, she was a wicked girl whose only goals were to serve her master, Gargamel, and become a menace to the Smurf Society. Nowadays, she was kinder and softer- a hottie of a blondie who, really, just wanted everyone to get along. She’d walked out of her house, waving to Hefty and Handy, who were chatting together beforehand. “Good morning!” She beamed, walking over and holding her hands together. “Hey, Smurfette!” Hefty greeted, picking up a weight and casually lifting it up and down. “How’s your morning so far?” Handy asked, though his eyes seemed to be focusing on a notepad in front of him. Smurfette laughed softly, finding Handy's focus on his work cute. “Oh, it’s been just Smurfy! I’m about to go talk with Urbane. Oh- Do you know where I’d find him?” “He’s near the lake again,” Handy said, nudging his head to the right, “but he’s in his thinking and brooding mood right now.” “That’s okay. Thanks, you two! Have fun now!” She smiled, walking towards the lake. As she went along the path, she could observe some of the Smurfs around her interacting with each other. Clumsy had fallen on his face in front of Farmer, who immediately held out a helpful hand to help him up; while Painter worked tirelessly on his artwork. Harmony fiddled with his horn, and Jammy played on his guitar. Even Greedy was seen eating a piece of pie off of his own windowsill. She couldn’t help but smile, knowing everything was how it should be. As Smurfette made it to the lake, she spotted Urbane staring directly into the water from a short rock. She sat next to him on the ground. “Hello, Urbane!..” “..Hello.” He replied, turning towards her before his eyes darted back towards the water ripples. “Is something the matter? I can come to the village if you need help.” “Oh, no, don’t worry! Just.. Well, you’ve been going to the lake a bit more than you used to recently. Is something going on?”
Urbane looked up, rubbing his chin like thinking to himself on how to answer, before he sighed, shrugging and looking back at her. “Well… Do you promise not to think I’m crazy?” He asked, looking quite sheepish. She nodded. “Of course I won’t, Urbane. Now tell me what’s the matter!” Urbane looked around, a few seconds passing before he elaborated on his thoughts. “...There is this girl. I don’t know her name, or how her face looks, but I know her.. hair. And her dress. And her voice, too. It’s… She’s beautiful.” He relaxed his shoulders, but wrapped his arms around his legs. “She used to come to this lake every night to sing near the water. But I haven’t seen her in a few nights.” “Oh dear!” Smurfette covered her mouth, before sympathetically patting his shoulder. “Maybe she’s sick!” “Yes, perhaps. But.. I’ve been having an itch that it’s something bigger than that.” He juggled his hands, trying to find the right words. “..I’m.. terribly worried.” “W- Well, uh.. How about we go ask Papa Smurf?” Smurfette smiled, trying to help Urbane with the suggestion. But Urbane simply shook his head. “I don’t know that Papa Smurf would be as much help as you think. This girl… She has blue hands. And dark blue hair. She looked like a Smurf, as much as you can see from the side. She even had a hat, just like you and me.” He shrugged. “She’s quite similar to you, I suppose. Have you ever seen anyone like you?” “Mm, no, I suppose not. Maybe.. Maybe you can.. Uh.. Oh, dear. Uh- Ask Brainy for help!” She chimed in, again. Urbane rubbed his chin again. “I don’t think he would believe me or the tale. She was like.. An angel. I don’t think he’d ever believe in one of those.” “Ah.. Hmm.. This is starting to get tough, Urbane! Why don’t we just TRY to ask Papa?!” Urbane hummed, looking up. He for sure didn’t want to mention any of it to Papa Smurf, but it seemed like their best bet to try to talk to him, so, as nervous as it made him, he agreed;. “I.. Suppose we can try, Smurfette.” Urbane sighed, stepping off the rock. “Thank you. For.. Talking to me about this.” “Of course, Urbane.” Smurfette smiled, nodding softly as they both walked towards Papa Smurf’s hut. Papa Smurf would have to believe them. He’d heard crazier things before, right? He would at least try to be a–

“Well, Urbane,” Papa Smurf started, sitting in front of the two, “I'm not saying you're a conscious dreamer, but there are a million things you could be Smurfing about. Are you sure what you're talking about is, well, real?” “Papa Smurf, I swear she’s real. And even if they were dreams, wouldn’t it be crazy for them to immediately stop?” “Mm..” Papa looked up, shaking his head. Smurfette leaned forward in her chair, tilting her head softly. “Papa Smurf, I’m not so sure about the dream theory. Urbane isn’t the type to daydream, see, and..” “Now, now. Either could be correct.” Papa Smurf noted, standing up and going to his bookshelf, scanning the names on the spines of each before his hand landed onto the top of a light purple book, wiping it of its dust and holding it out for Urbane. “If this girl is real, then.. Perhaps she is a spirit. Or a soul. I recommend you search this book, my boy, and remember to be safe if you go out to look for her, tell me. Can you do that for me?” Urbane stared at the title, nodded, and gently took the book from Papa’s grasp. ‘WOODLAND SPIRITS AND GUIDES’, it was titled. He wiped away the rest of the dust and turned it on an angle to show Smurfette, who peeked around it in interest. “..I’ll look through it, Papa Smurf.” Urbane softly stated, looking up from the book to look up at Papa. “Good. But really.. Be careful. And talk to me. If you need help, I can give you it.” Urbane nodded again, standing up and looking down at Smurfette, who shortly stood straight.
After a quick exchange of words, the two left the house, walking back towards the lake with the heavy purple book in hand.
Once they stopped in front of the water, Urbane looked down at the book, letting out a long breath. Smurfette turned to him, putting a hand on his shoulder. “It’s okay, Urbane. You take care of it as soon as you want to.” “..Well.. I need to do it now. For her.” “..There’s no need to be nervous, you know.” Smurfette lowered her hand, looking at the side view of Urbane's face.
Urbane’s face softened at Smurfette’s words, nodding. “You’re.. You’re right. Thank you, Smurfette.” With a second passing, Urbane sighed again, putting the book down on a rock and opening it.
( if you read this, thank you! im not too great a writer, but i really do appreciate it. ill have a second chapter soon! )
